To want something to get fixed and stay fixed?

We've been doing up the wreck of a house we bought for nearly two years. It's nearly finished. But I am sick and tired of getting thigs sorted, only for it to get spoiled or break a little while later.

So far wee had a leak in the (supposedly fixed) roof which has caused the (reskimmed and decorated) wall of the spare room to be ruined.

The latest thing is the new boiler programmer and wireless thermostat (which replaced a wireless thermostat that was installed after we moved in) seem to have packed up less than 2 weeks after they were fitted. I'm freezing!

Why can't we just deal with something and then it's sorted? It's infuriating and costing us a fortune

Quite agree. Even though we finished working on our house several years ago... I just want to get things right and then never to break! I broke the shredder a couple of days ago, and the latest is the bedroom bin which I stepped on in the dark and ripped. No big deal, but there's always something, whether it's the washing machine or the doorbell or the stapler.

I tell myself it's a first world problem which is ultimately down to us having so much - in the third world they don't have shredders, bins or doorbells, and they wouldn't have boiler programmers, spare rooms or thermostats either.

I'm not feeling quite so calm and rational about it NotGood.

DH seems completely indifferent to the fact that I am sitting under a blanket with my hood up. He took the door off the living room three weeks ago and promised that he'd put it straight back. Now he seems to think that the answer to the cold is to put the fire on in the living room, despite the fact that all the cold is headin straight out of the door

I'm with you OP. If we could get to the point where bathrooms stay sealed and water stops coming through ceilings that would be a major step forwards.

Every time I fix something, something else drops off!

It's as if the whole house is laughing at me. I've given up on central heating and ordered electric flat panels instead. I want to be warm!

I'm sick of it all. And fed up with DH lying to me managing my expectations about how long everything will take.

And now he's sulking because apparently I'm not allowed to cross about the brown heating and the fact there's a gale blowing into the living room.

Why can't he rehang the living room door?

We have recurring problems with an apparently "fixed" leaky roof. It's been going on for years, we've had to move out. It's never ending, expensive and horribly stressful. It just grinds you down. You have my utmost sympathy.

The new door is slightly too large, so it needs planing. DH says he hasn't got the right tools which is odd because he did last time we need to hang a door so apparently the guy sorting out the conservatory is going to do it, but he has been taking his sweet time over the conservatory tied up and too busy to do it.

Unless the old door has been skipped, I would insist on the old door going back on. Or he gets his finger out and planes the new one down.

Or do what I did for several months when I couldn't be arsed to rehang the door at the top of the stairs hang a very thick curtain over the door way to keep the draughts out.

It has been skipped (although its still outside the house), but that no longer fits either because we had carpet fitted and it also needs planing. He is busy doing other stuff, but its the constant reworking of timescales that drives me nuts, he's either totally hopeless at judging how long something will take or just lying to me to keep the peace and I know what my theory is about that

But it's not just his inability to accurately assess timescales though - it's also a matter of prioritising. Leaving a door off the room in summer wouldn't be an issue, but in cold weather, it should move to the to[ of the 'To Do' list. What is he spending his tome on, if not this?

I agree through - the door would be a half an hour job for the carpenter but he's been too coy about kicking the guy in the butt to make him do it. I am not suitably qualified to deal with carpenters, naturally.

What make of wireless thermostat do you have? Which boiler etc? Normally an easy snag to fix! I may have a tip or two for you

It's a Baxi Boiler and a programastat timer. The boiler works fine. It's seems to be that the programmer is faulty because it was only fitted about two weeks ago. It's not pushing through the information about the room temperature to the boiler.

I might not kick the carpenter, but a bit of chocolate biscuit bribery may be called for.

Sympathy on the theirs always something broken. Radiator valves are fixed, so now the cold tap in the downstairs loo has disintegrated.

We're not here during the day to bribe him with biscuits. But that doesn't seem to matter too much, because apparently neither is he. Perhaps that's why it's taken him 8 weeks to get two thirds of they way through a 6 week job.

Right, I am off to bed so DH can give me the cold shoulder.

If its a wireless unit it will have a receiver unit next to the boiler. They normally have a override function. Receiver unit is smallish, 6 inches square. If you let me know the brand? Drayton? Seamons?
