Yanbu energy saving lightbulbs don't show up properly on my phone camera and have been known to change the channel on the tv. And you have to wait for them to "warm up". And they don't fit in a lot of lamps anyway. Utter shit.

There are so many of the fuckers now I don't even know what I'm buying - used to be simple 60w/100w, bayonet/screw.

Oh how I lust after a 100w bulb, the one in my dining room ceiling fitting is so fucking dim you can barely see dinner

And the choice is boggling. I needed a replacement for a bedside lamp. Just wanted a standard 30 watt bayonet bulb. I was in B&Q for 20 minutes until a member of staff took pity on me. I'm still none the wiser.

Totally agree, we got fed up with dimly lit rooms, DH bought normal "old style" bulbs online and in bulk. Can now read without switching on a hundred lamps.

We have expensive but brilliant ones from simplyled.com. Low energy, good natural colour, near-immediate brightness (say two seconds from switch to full force), and fittings identical to old style. And they can be used on dimmers.

The only other place I have ever been to in the world where the lighting was as poor as we are subjected to these days was communist

both halogen and fluorescent lamps are obsolete now and have been replaced by the superior LED lamps that use practically no energy in comparison to halogen or fluorescent while giving good instant light with no heat at all. Halogen lamps imo should be banned due to being a fire risk.

bureni IME the light from LEDs isn't nearly as nice as the light from halogens. It's quite dull in comparison and there is often a bit of a flicker.

I stockpiled proper lightbulbs when I found out they were stopping making them.

To be fair, I managed to find 42W LEDs to replace the previous 40W incandescent and the light it amazing. Just thought the flickering was due to a bit of fluff though, so disappointed about that.

YANBU. I am so pleased to have found a local shop which still stocks Ye Olde Fashioned Lightbulbs. I have changed all our dimbo bulbs and put lovely proper ones in their places. I can now actually see stuff!

I hate them, the light they giveout is crap, AND, if I am in a badlylit room I start to feel depressed. I can't explain it, but the drabness starts to pull me down very quickly.

Subtle and soft lighting doesn't do this to me, just these horrible draining bulbs

You can usually find real light bulbs in Poundland / world / emporium type shops.

The one in our toilet is currently flickering for about 30 seconds so most of the time you're in and out before it's actually light.

And they don't always last so we seem to get through more, despite the manufacturer's claims.

My led lamps are vastly superior to halogen which produce ten times more heat than they do light making them very inefficient and dangerous . All my LED lamps run of a DC low voltage supply so I have never seen any flickering as such. Downside is they are still quite expensive but are coming down in price.

bizarre, I have never had a problem with them. Yes, they need to warm up, but mine do in seconds (less than 10, I would say). I just buy them in Sainsbo's, bayonnet or screw and the equivalent wattage, which is on the packaging (so 11 watt for 60, IIRC). Can't remember the last time I either bought or changed a lightbulb. I prefer side lights to main in the living room at night, don't know if that's down to the lightbulbs or not, just feels cosier.

Thank goodness - I will not have to find an electrician when I run out of halogens then!

They are a bit wasteful as each bulb is 100W, and there are three in each fitting.

OH saves electricity by not replacing the spent bulbs until we are on the last one!

We have the bulbs that take forever to get going and give out a light that I can work in. When I want to use my room for sewing, I go in about five/ten minutes beforehand run the light on to warm up, then carry on doing whatever I was doing for a bit. Then I go back to my sewing room - and DH has nearly always turned it off by then! I do tell him now, I ve left the bulb on to warm up please, but its instinct with him, he sees an empty room and turns the light off.
