School Mothers

AIBU, to speak to the school regarding inappropriate use of parents email addresses? A few days ago two Mothers had a argument over a school jumper, they had an angry exchange which was broadcasted to every parent on the school email list. I am firstly horrified that they would do this and secondly I don't want my email used for this type of pathetic behavior. I also have constant drivel about cake sales, Christmas Fairs etc, I gave my address to be used for play dates and birthdays not inane chat. WWYD?

speak to the women sending the emails - not really the school's problem.

HongKongPhooy · 17/10/2012 13:10

playdates and birthdays are pretty inane...it is all quite inane isnt it?! Confused

i imagine the arguement wasnt supposed to go out to everyone though?

sadie3 · 17/10/2012 13:11

It was addressed to the whole year.

Is it a school list of emails or is it a list that the parents have organised themselves?

socharlotte · 17/10/2012 13:14

shouldn't the school send emails to themselves and the BCC to parents so you don't see anyones email address.Teh school should absolutely not have shared your emal address with anyone.
or do you mean that you supplied your email address to be put on a contact sheet for other parents. In which case it's not the schools responsibility what those parents wish to send you.

CarolynR · 17/10/2012 13:14

Did they know it was address to the whole year? Perhaps drop the two people involved a line saying you (and loads of other people) were copied into x email and seeing as it's nothing to do with you, perhaps you didn't know you'd done that? Might be a subtle way of telling them not to do it again!

5Foot5 · 17/10/2012 13:15

I am also confused about the list.

I had assumed that school had gathered in email addresses so they could send notices and announcements out. But it seems like anyone can post to this list. What is the purpose of that?

zombieplanmum · 17/10/2012 13:15

Why do you think that emails about cake sales and christmas fairs are drivel? Do you not want to support your childs school. You are quite right though, the email pool should not be about social networking so this "argument" sent around to the whole school was inappropriate. Would be a whole lot more interesting that your organising of play dates though, which to be fair, comes under the same heading if you ask me.

picturesinthefirelight · 17/10/2012 13:15

If its a list given out by the school to someone in charge eh PTA rep then complain.

If its a privately organised patent thing then there is nothing you can do. That's why I only give my email & mobile no. out to personal friends.

FutTheShuckUp · 17/10/2012 13:15

Urrrghh the term 'playdate' makes me want to chop my ears off and feed them to a passing dog...

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 17/10/2012 13:16

I don't think the school will cherry pick what is e mailed to yourself. It sounds they use email as a form of communication for the school, not just play dates.

It's for communication and the school must have felt something needed to be communicated. I'm sure they didn't e mail idle gossip.

Why don't you want to know about cake sales and such? Isn't that part and parcel of school life and supporting the school?

Zipitydooda · 17/10/2012 13:21

I didn't think schools were allowed to give out everyone's email addresses for data protection reasons.
If you've added yourself to a parent rep organised list then the whole point of these lists is to organise cake sales, rotas to help etc so you shouldn't complain about this especially as it is to support your child's school.
The jumper discussion shouldn't have been sent to everyone though. Maybe the senders don't know the difference between 'reply' and 'reply to all'

sadie3 · 17/10/2012 13:26

Its ok thanks for the help. The school has emailed the parents and apologized for the two Mothers behavior. I have taken my name off the school list.

Zombie, I stay as far away from school as possible after 5 children I have had enough.

sadie3 · 17/10/2012 13:29

The school asked if I would mind the class rep having my email, I said no I dont mind. Two Mothers had an almighty slanging match via email, the first woman said that she wanted ALL the parents to see so the second replied and it carried on beeping all night.

(to clear up any confusion)

I told another mum that a particular child was a whiny madam who ruined DDs birthday party with her spoilt behaviour. Stupidly attached it to another email. Which then got sent all round the class, including the devil child's mum. She still won't speak to me....

sadie3 · 17/10/2012 13:32

Oh no, I would have been mortified.

In which case the class rep should be blind ccing emails do others can't see the addresses. You gave permission for one person (class rep) to have it- not all & sundry.

I would request to be taken off the list.

CelineMcBean · 17/10/2012 13:42

How undignified of those women.

Sounds like they need to set up a private yahoo group or similar. Then each member can elect to receive all emails, a daily digest or important announcements only. People can also contact each other directly off board.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 17/10/2012 13:49

I see where you are coming from, and I'm not a fan of uninteresting emails that I have to go through and delete.

But, I have to say I would be highly amused and entertained by two mothers having an email row in front of the whole schools email list Blush

HongKongPhooy · 17/10/2012 13:49

I think the 2 arguing women should be removed from the list-idiots

Beanbagz · 17/10/2012 13:50

I sent an email to our school suggesting that email addresses should be BCC's instead of displayed on messages. I was fed up of getting junk from people who've pressed 'Reply All' rather than 'Reply'.

The school have taken it on board and we are no longer able to see other people's email adress on message from the school.

Just wish my business clients would do the same!

choccyp1g · 17/10/2012 13:50

Am I the only one who wants to hear more details about the jumper fight?

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 17/10/2012 13:59

No choccy, you're not!

porcamiseria · 17/10/2012 13:59

for gods sake, what has this to do with the school???

jesus

email them, and tell them where to go!
