AIBU to be increasingly infuriated by the issue of same sex marriage with BOTH sides?

The whole thing is getting on my nerves now. And I mean both sides of the debate, too. The against who are saying it will wreck society-how exactly? Those who say that it will strengthen relationships of gay people=pull the other one!
As far as I am concerned, civil partnerships and marriage provide equality of financial and legal rights and, whichever a person has, it is up to THEM to make it (relationship) work and cp's and marriage are just titles. So just leave things as they are.

I am absolutely infuriated by The tory party using this issue as pure gesture politics when they do not give a stuff about people's lives and the REALLY important issues like the economy and jobs and things that really matter.

Not saying labour wouldn't be any different, but people, does it matter enough to alter the status quo?

'I read a post a while ago (not on this thread) where somebody said they wanted a civil partnership in a registry office the same one as offered to same sex couples. And they said they were denied this. I think the state has to treat the unions in the same way'

VivienneMary, that couple are part of the Equal Love campaign, which is led by Peter Tatchell. They knew they would not be permitted to have a CP but they had to do it as part of their legal challenge. The campaign has submitted a legal challenge to the European Court of Human Rights, arguing that it is unlawful to deny marriage to same sex partners, and equally unlawful to deny CPs to opposite sex partners. A judgement is expected in 2014 and they are confident that the ruling will go in their favour . Equal Love if you want to read more Smile

FFS I wish bigotry and ignorance were a crime. Then dopishe would be down at the cop shop explaining her theory on "gay marriage shouldn't be allowed because people get pregnant" or whatever strung out claptrap line of logic she's spouting.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 11/10/2012 17:01

You missed a bit, gay. It's not just because people get pregnant ... there was also the rant about evil, irresponsible gay women getting pregnant without planning properly, and not sorting things out proper with the fathers of their children.

Because, you know, lesbians are notorious for unplanned pregnancies and casual hookups with men who impregnante them.

I liked that bit a lot, it showed a really detailed understanding of the situation.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 11/10/2012 17:02

*impregnante? No idea what happened there. I quite like the idea of getting someone 'impregnante'.

seeker · 11/10/2012 17:04

Impregnante is ^fantastic! It's what Don Quixote's girlfriend would be........!

LineRunner · 11/10/2012 17:06

(I'm still loving 'Skanky Morales' from the Jeremy Hunt thread.)

LRDtheFeministDragon · 11/10/2012 17:06

Grin It so is.

Though, you know, I was never sure about him and Sancho Panza, I think they were rather closer than he was to the oblivious lady-love (forgotten her name).

EmpressOfTheSevenScreams · 11/10/2012 17:35

Liz Jones accused women on stealing sperm didn't she? Though that was single straight women I think.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 11/10/2012 17:37

She did, didn't she?

OP, do you consider yourself to be very beautiful in a rather ugly bikini? And do you dislike your ex very much?

MaryZed · 11/10/2012 19:17

So, has she given up gone away?

Yippee.

EmpressOfTheSevenScreams · 11/10/2012 19:21

She's taking it all VERY personally. Wonder why she's quite so bothered about the finer points of the adultery laws and paternity rights?

MaryZed · 11/10/2012 19:26

It's all part of the "justifying treating people differently".

She started off all softly-softly-let's-discuss-this to get everyone onside, but now is showing her true opinions, I think.

EmpressOfTheSevenScreams · 11/10/2012 19:32

Evil lesbian sperm stealers, that's us.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 11/10/2012 19:36

You could form a 70s band with that title.

EmpressOfTheSevenScreams · 11/10/2012 19:38

Gay40 I wish not reading and understanding other people's posts clearly were a crime-you'd be done for it. Hmm.

OP posts:
dopishe · 11/10/2012 20:15

The trouble with you, Gay40, is that anybody who has doubts about gay marriage should be arrested for their views, YOU'RE the bigot. Wanting somebody arrested for stating -some rather innocuous when all is said and done, I've said nothing truly outrageous -views. It is people like you who seek to destroy true freedom, not me.

OP posts:
Gay40 · 11/10/2012 20:17

I understand very clearly: you think equal marriage is a waste of time, for the myriad of (pathetic) reasons you've explained.

You got diverted onto sperm stealers but the crux of your argument is that we have better things to spend our time on than ensuring all our citizens are treated with the same respect as regards their marital choices.

Gay40 · 11/10/2012 20:18

Can I remind you that it is Equal Marriage.

Gay40 · 11/10/2012 20:19

There are no doubts to be had about equality.

LineRunner · 11/10/2012 20:20

Tbh, OP, you lost me all that stuff about your sister.

Gay40 · 11/10/2012 20:20

You're not quite into the bracket of homophobic hate crime, but you are skating on thin ice, as my mother would say.

LineRunner · 11/10/2012 20:20

with all that stuff ...

quirrelquarrel · 11/10/2012 20:23

I'm gay and I don't believe in gay, lesbian, whatever marriage. It's just a non issue for me. I simply can't get worked up over it. So someone wants to deny me a bit of paper confirming how special and lasting this relationship of mine is/will be, big deal. The church gets to choose- and I don't believe in marriage anyway. What's been said 10x over and more articulately in this here thread. I think it has little relevance in the modern world and I personally would not choose to be a part of it.
