to use their bin?

NDN's have gone away for about 6 weeks. They've been gone 2 or 3 weeks.
I've just cut down tons of triffids in the garden and wondered if it would be really bad manners to use their garden waste wheelie while they're away to save 200 trips to the tip.
if the ( very nosy) other neighbour told them on their return will they be pissed off?

It wouldn't bother me as long as the bin was empty from your triphids when I got home.

If you think they might be funny about it, maybe find out when they come back and pop around briefly with fresh milk, bread and biccies and say 'I really hope you don't mind but I used your green bin whilst you were away etc etc'. I'd forgive someone for pretty much anything if they showed up at my door with milk, biccies and bread when I'd just returned from holiday.

Illegal never mind bad mannered, filling their bin is unlikely to prevent 200 trips to the council yard now is it?

There is no way of knowing how they will react. Do you get on well with them?

I would have no problem doing this with my NDN as we often help each other out this way and when they go away (often in caravan) I always pull their bins out and replace them so that it isn't obvious to others that they are away iyswim. You could always explain this was one of your reasons when they return.

Actually you're being silly OP. those plants will just walk away. No need to cut them up or anything.

if they were here I'm 99% certain they would happily let use use it.
We keep an eye on each others' houses and they feed our cat when we're away, so they're not unreasonable nutters.

Yes, they will walk away, hence why I need to keep them contained in a bin that has a lid!
Suppose I could just set them off in the direction of the tip

It wouldn't bother me, in the space of 2-3 weeks the bin would be emptied at least once anyway. When I go on holiday one of my nearby relatives will pop in with the essentials before I get back (grandmother has a spare key), but a bottle of wine is always appreciated if you use my bin

Yes, give them a map with directions. Although they might not believe in suicide, so pretend you're sending them to a flesh eating party.

We use NDN's bin practically everytime they are emptied as theirs is always half empty but we take it down and bring it back up (needs to go down loads of stairs) so thought that made up for the fact we were using it.

1 bin is not enough for 2 weeks for a family of 6 (5 adults)!

Also, didn't realise it was bad manners! Why would anyone be bothered? I mean, what difference does it make? Bin needs emptied anyway and if it's not full it will still need emptied.

I would use their bin and pop round with milk/bread/biscuits/tea or coffee and say I hope you don't mind too.

People are so miserable these days if they would get hacked off over something like that, unless they had a neighbour from hell.

A bit bad manners I think.

If you do it, you should write them a note telling them that you did and put a box of chocs with it or similar. That way, you are covered if nosy person tells on you.

But why the need for chocolates or wine for something that doesn't cause them the least bit of inconvenience?

In our case, technically we are doing them a favour by getting the bloody big massive thing down the stairs!

Wouldn't bother me in the least if it was my bin as long as I got back and it was clean and empty. A little note from the neighbours would be icing on the cake.

(Be careful though, OP, to ensure that the inside of the bin is clean. Some people tip in gawd knows what into garden waste bins and they can be left with eg dirt or sludge on the bottom.)

I did this last week when my neighbours were away and I'll be doing it next week too.

We all use the opportunity to clear out our lofts and sheds in this street

your neighbour probably pays an annual charge for that bin ( they do round here), so if you don't use it , then there's 6 weeks they're paying for and not getting a service.

Might it not be better to take the triffid remnants to the dump? I would just worry that more triffids might be attracted to the wheelybins, to see what had happened to their comrades. Last thing you need is to have to explain to the NDNs why their garden is overrun with poisonous, man-eating vegetables.
