To seriously doubt my bf's capabilities after he left my front door open?

Just that really. I've just dropped him at work, having loaded the car with his music equipment as he was making himself a sandwich. I came back to find that he had left my front door wide open. I was gone for 45 minutes. I'm absolutely delighted and surprised that nothing seems to be gone and nobody seems to have moved in - I live in Lahndahn so this seems to be fucking lucky - but I can't believe he could have been so careless/preoccupied/in the clouds. Do grown men really get so dreamy that they do things like this? I have no contents insurance as I can't afford the ludicrous security measures that would be necessary to grant me it. So I could have literally lost everything. AIBU?

Do you need ludicrous security measures because you are in London? Because I don't need them and my contents insurance is about £17 a month...

And yes, he's a moron.

Well...without knowing what the "ludicrous security measures" are you're talking about, I'd say you are being more unreasonable than your boyfriend not having contents insurance! Leaving the front door open is daft but something that could be done in an instant of having a brain freeze - not having contents insurance is a more determined ongoing problem I'd say.....

I've gone out leaving the front door open. Probably more than once. So I'm taking his side - YABU.

Well, I was trying to be nice, what I originally wrote was 'yes, he's a moron but you're a bigger one for not having contents insurance'.

But that's a personal attack and I didn't want to be deleted.

So I didn't say it.

And everyone has moronic moments! Grin

I also don't have contents insurance, I've got better things to spend my money on and as most big items like tellys etc need replacing every couple of yrs to keep up to date I don't fret over my old one getting nicked.
I would however go nuts if my door was left open. Was is head in the clouds or does he simply not respect u enough to take care of your things?

Wow. Okay. Well, I hope you never get your entire house cleared out, which has happened to people. It's not just TVs (which I do not replace every couple of years, personally) that get nicked.

How about your china? Or your books? Or your precious whatever collection?

Not having insurance is really really stupid.

Yes we all have moments - but I've never left someone elses front door open/unlocked ffs.

My dad does this all the time. He even did it once when he went on holiday for a week. Fortunately, he's been lucky and no thieves noticed.

I did this only yesterday, door was wide open! I was so bloody ashamed and embarassed but I had a crying 3yr old and a 6yr old who wouldn't put on his own shoes and two bikes to load into the car. I may be a moron, I hope I'm not.

My husband was Ok about it despite having a phone call from a neighbour informing him!

I took DD swimming and left the car not only unlocked but with the drivers door wide open Blush

Was amazed nothing was stolen in the 1.5 hours we were gone.

DH went to work and left the back door wide open. He also went to work and left the oven on and the pasta sauce he was making still on the hob Shock

It's a bit pillocky of your BF to leave the door open but as long as its a one off I would forgive him Smile

So you were packing the car while he was making a sandwich? Why did you not go back into the house to check that you had everything and personally check that the door was closed when you both left?

I've left my door open by accident several time and been gone all day so I must be a moron too. Luckily (touchwood) nothing has ever been stolen.

we-ell I would have contents insurance but I'd have to pay over 5k to get proper locks fitted - so yeh, shoot me, I haven't got ci.
