Is this Priest being unreasonable

Really should call this thread 'why are those pesky Catholics so easily offended' but I did think it was a good antidote to the endless threads about Muslims Grin

It the Church Hall, he's the priest, he doesn't want spiritualist yoga there? It's kind of up to him really... I can see his point.

If was the Priest banning a Zumba class then I'd probably be mildly 'outraged', but spiritualist yoga is deep and rather at odd with Christian philosophy so I see it more as a conflict of interests than intolerance.

If it was the village hall, rather than the Church Hall my outrage would once again be mild and rolly eyed.

see I think - he is a priest, it's 'his' hall he can do what he likes (even if it makes him look a bit of a dick) BUT I also think, if he was a Muslim there would be outrage Grin

I'm a Catholic and my mum once gave me a book of confessionable (not sure that's a real word!) sins, and yoga was one of them so was onanism (which I had to google) but that's a whole other thread! Always made me chuckle, but I guess he's not being unreasonable.

Not as unreasonable as the priest next to our school who wouldn't let us use the Church to perform a Nativity last Christmas (4-6yr olds) as he said most of their parents weren't mass goers. It is a Catholic school, children learn ( catholic) religion every day, why shouldn't the children be able to use the church. Older pupils also provide choir one Sunday a week and servers every day, it suits him then to have them.
And then he wonders why his congregation is shrinking

If he burned the yoga teachers car then yes that would be unreasonable.

Otherwise, well still slightly U not really in the spirit of things IYKWIM.

I think he's being unreasonable but I guess it's up to the individual priest what happens on his premises.

Lots of protestant churches ban yoga as well. I'm surprised its news headlines. I thought it was pretty bog standard that yoga was banned from church premises. I think catholic priest is within his rights to outlaw yoga on church premises.

mais surely your priest would welcome the chance for non church going children to learn about the natvity. That is plain bonkers, and vvv. unreasonable.

I thought yoga was a gentle zumba Blush. Just an exercise class. I'm sorry to offend anyone but do these people doing yoga and pilates in England really practise Hinduism.
I can see the Priest's point if they are sitting meditating or chanting.

My mother is Catholic and does yoga. Pope John Paul II warned Catholics not to do yoga years ago.

"What does the Pope know about yoga" she sniffed. "He was a goalkeeper". And carried on.

Not a big one on Papal infallibility, my mother.

It's not intolerant at all - I have said he has the right to do it - just pointing out it's not just Muslims who do daft things in the name of religion

since when is disagreeing with something or pointing out similarity to other threads intolerant - I have, at no point, abused his religious views

I think you'll find most churches would object to having 'spiritual yoga' which is what it was advertised as. There is a difference - if its purely exercise based then fine but when there is a spiritual aspect to it like meditation for exampleI think thats where churches feel uneasy.
A the end of the day the hall belongs to the church therefore they have a right to decide who uses it and who doesn't.

I agree with you that it's daft, gordy. I also agree that he was not BU. He was just being typical of the clergy who are still stranded in the 15th century. I would be willing to bet the Quakers would not have had a problem with this.

To each their own and all that, but with the world the way it is, old-style religious organisations really shouldn't complain when people move on.
