YANBU - I can't stand it. I like White Russians Grin

monsterchild · 23/09/2012 23:50

I don't like gin unless in a G&T and the weather is very very hot!

Otherwise it's like drinking a horrible tincture of pine. blegh.

Losingitall · 23/09/2012 23:51

Do you know why it's drank with tonic?

British Colonialism + mosquitos+ Gin is quintessentially British + tonic has quinine in it = mosquito repellant Grin

Losingitall · 23/09/2012 23:54

Oh and the poster that said vodka is gin with the flavour taken out is correct.

Vodka & gin same base product. Gin is distiller with botanicals and vodka isn't. (apart from a few rare ones)

Tryingtothinkofnewsnazzyname · 24/09/2012 00:00

I can't stand it either. Give me vodka any day. Or even diet coke.

ifancyashandy · 24/09/2012 06:42

Hendricks & Fever Tree Light Tonic with a slice of cucumber is heaven in a glass.

Fever Tree Light Tonic has been a revelation. Diet but tastes.full fat,.honestly! And I hate all other diet drinks. Pricey but my gin is worth it!

mumto2andnomore · 24/09/2012 06:53

I agree gin is horrible , love sloe gin though !

Japple · 24/09/2012 07:05

You know,a lot of people grouse about Gin,but we keep it around for gourmet
cooking,as many recipes call for Juniper berries-so we just sub using the gin.
In the summer,we make pitchers of "Long Island tea" using Real tea,not coke)
and it is a beautiful drink.I don't put soap on all of our cooking thermometers-
we wipe them off with gin.The drink, "Sloe Gin Fizz"is one of our favorites. Also,
at night,if we get a horrible Foot cramp,we drink a small "Gin and Tonic" and
the cramp goes away fast.Gin has its uses.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 24/09/2012 07:10

Gin is vile. I threw up on gin when I was 14, I can't even bear the smell of it now.

OlaRapaceFru · 24/09/2012 07:12

YABU! I love a gin with loads of ice, loads of tonic and a slice of lime, but I've sworn off drinking G&T in one friend's house. She puts in one lump of ice and half-heartedly waves the tonic bottle at the glass of gin - it was the most vile thing I'd drunk apart from Campari Grin

bigsnugglebunny · 24/09/2012 07:22

Hendricks all the way!

I love gin and ginger ale - I believe it's called a "horse's neck"

However I've been teetotal for over a year now because of tummy troubles Sad

Ginismyfriend · 24/09/2012 07:22

All the gin-spurners are clearly drinking the wrong gin. Get thee to a Hendricks emporium.

EugenesAxe · 24/09/2012 07:55

Geez - I've never drunk Hendricks. I've always been a sworn Plymouth lover... I'll have to try it. Along with Fever Tree Light Tonic (thanks for the tip!).

pootlebug - Grin
Japple - good tips.

ginmakesitallok · 24/09/2012 07:57

Hmmmppphhhh!

StepAwayFromTheORANGECakes · 24/09/2012 07:57

It really must be Plymouth Gin, over ice with fever tree tonic and a squeeze of lemon or lime. Their sloe gin is yum too but by far best was their damson but sadly they have not produced it for a number of years due to lack of damsons ... sob

SlipperyNipple · 24/09/2012 08:03

I have learnt is best to make the G&T with very fresh tonic (the individual serving cans are the best)

OP YABU

OlaRapaceFru · 24/09/2012 08:10

I agree with you Slippery, the cans are the best Wink

I never really enjoyed a G&T at my Mum's cos she either bought litre bottles of tonic which went flat, as she wasn't much of a drinker unless she had guests, so it could last for months, or she insisted on making tonic in her SodaStream vile stuff Grin

ScarletLady02 · 24/09/2012 08:14

I can't stand it...I was another who nicked a load at the age of about 14 and got pissed. I also topped the bottle back up with water thinking my Dad wouldn't notice (I took about half...no clue how I thought he wouldn't notice).

I have had a Gimlet once though which was quite nice but you couldn't taste the gin. It's a cocktail with lime and stuff, tastes a bit like a Margherita (sp?).

pinkstinks · 24/09/2012 08:41

What! How has no one even mentioned Gin and Cranberry? Now that is perfection over ice with a wedge of lime!!

limitedperiodonly · 24/09/2012 08:47

Gin is wonderful.

Beefeater for choice, Plymouth next. Don't mind Gordon's. Don't mind Miller's but it's too expensive. Hendricks is okay.

Bombay Sapphire is horrible and poncey and stupidly expensive.

Tonic is paramount. Diet tonic is vile. Schweppes and only from small bottles unless there are enough of you to finish a big bottle before it goes flat. Glass bottles for preference but will accept a plastic bottle under protest.

Highball glass, not one of those goldfish bowls on stalks. Plenty of ice put in the glass first, not afterwards.

It is acceptable for the barman to pour in a little bit of tonic for courtesy's sake but no more. LET ME DO IT, I TELL YOU. YOU'RE GOING TO DROWN IT.

Lime should not be allowed near it.

I may have been thinking about this since before I was allowed to drink.

Softlysoftly · 24/09/2012 08:53

Would rather down meths and didn't accidentally as a teenager, oh no not me

limitedperiodonly · 24/09/2012 08:55

I went to a bar where the barmaid kept smearing a wedge of lime round the rim of the glass. Angry

I asked her not to and may have been quite testy the last time. It was my third one Grin.

If you can't pour a simple drink without mucking it up get out of the way and let me behind the bar.

catsmother · 24/09/2012 08:59

Sorry but I can't abide the smell of it - and if something smells nasty I won't taste it. The smell of gin always reminds me of loo cleaner.

Mrsjay · 24/09/2012 09:05

It is Rank I always think it tasted perfumey and would you drink your perfume i have tried it twice and a G n T isn't my thing,

OlaRapaceFru · 24/09/2012 09:15

I've just remembered I know someone who drinks Bloody Mary with gin - I think it's called a Bloody Murder. Not being a great Bloody Mary fan (although I like vodka and tomato juice as separate drinks) the thought of a BM with gin makes me feel a bit Envy = green around the gills!
