To want pockets in trousers?

Actual pockets, that you can fit a phone or wallet in, instead of these stupid half pockets that so many women's trousers have?

YANBU

I want pockets in skirts too. And, in both cases, I want pockets that are deep enough for things to not fall out of. And when a pair of "combat" style trousers have a leg pocket, I'd really like for there to be leg pockets on BOTH sides, not just the right hand side. Some of us are left-handed or, strangely enough, have TWO hands which can use pockets.

Women often have small personages around us who give us things to carry such as dirty tissues or small pebbles and we don't all carry handbags at all times, so we need pockets.

cheekybarsteward · 20/09/2012 13:48

YES!!! And why don't women's jackets have inside pockets in like men's do?
If I go for a walk I don't want to take a handbag but do need phone, money etc.

MuddlingMackem · 20/09/2012 13:53

YANBU.

I've been griping about this for years to anyone who will listen. It's one of the reasons why I almost always buy my coats from the men's range rather than the women's. And why when I don't need to wear smart trousers I live in jeans, as some women's jeans do have decent pockets.

I also have a bumbag instead of a handbag as I find it less faffy, unless I'm going to something where that would be unsuitable, but there are definitely times I would just like to be able to carry the essentials in pockets so that I don't need to take it with me.

Callisto · 20/09/2012 13:57

I bought a padded gilet recently (for not a small amount of money, though not loads) with an inside phone pocket. Unfortunately the phone pocket is constructed in such a way that I can't get my very small and basic phone in, even when forcing it so much I thought I was going to break the phone/pocket. How fucking stupid is that?

Like Muddling, one of the reasons I wear jeans a lot is that they generally have four usable pockets.

InvisibleHotPinkWeasel · 20/09/2012 13:58

Yup my gripe too - particularly this new breed of leggings with fake pockets seen on.

Why not actually just sew on a actual pocket?????

Callisto · 20/09/2012 13:59

To add, the phone pocket is the right size for my phone. If I could get the phone into the pocket, I know it would fit perfectly. It is quite amazingly badly constructed. Sad

Callisto · 20/09/2012 14:00

Grin @ fake pockets. That is really fucking stupid too.

Startailoforangeandgold · 20/09/2012 14:07

I have a pair of Next cords which not only have no pockets, but also have stupid flaps on the arse to make it look as if they have.

The number of times I feel this flapping about and try and stick my car keys in said non existent pocket makes me very very Angry

MuddlingMackem · 20/09/2012 14:39

I remember the nightmare I had looking for maternity trousers with pockets, they weren't in style that year. Neither were over the bump trousers, so I had to spend my pregnancy in dungarees: they looked stupid and I baked in them, but at least they had great pockets! Hmm Grin

samandi · 20/09/2012 17:02

Glad I'm not the only one who is irritated about this! :-) I was beginning to think I was really odd or something.

samandi · 20/09/2012 17:04

The most recent purchase that set me off on this was a pair of jeans btw, so I hope it's not a fad that's extending to all jeans too ... have bought this brand/similar style for years now and they've only just started to do the half pocket thing ... very annoying as I didn't even think to check

OP posts:
samandi · 20/09/2012 17:07

LMAO Startail and Muddling :-)

Callisto, I can only assume that the phone pocket is for those extra special laydee's mobile phones that are apparently a quarter of the size of gentlemen's - um, normal? - phones

Pockets in women's clothes "spoil the line", don't you know?

I need pockets. I don't want my phone in my bag. Stupid designers.

YANBU! This drives me nuts! I avoid carrying a handbag at all costs so have to have decent sized pockets. That is the one upside to my horrible combat work trousers that they have more pockets than I know what to do with.

TheCrackFox · 20/09/2012 17:26

YANBU

Coats, trousers and skirts need pockets. Funnily enough sometimes I can't cart a hand bag all over the place.

MuddlingMackem · 20/09/2012 17:36

amicissimma

I buy my jeans from M&S, so I hope they don't extend that approach to those!

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 20/09/2012 17:38

YANBU. All my life I have felt like this. Sob!

MuddlingMackem · 20/09/2012 17:41

Actually, this thread is just reminding me of the torment I put my mother through when I was in senior school, as I insisted my school skirt had to have pockets. I was also one of the few pupils who still wore a blazer in fourth and fifth year, because I liked the pockets to carry stuff around in. Grin

LostinaPaperCup · 20/09/2012 17:54

Hmm, lots of clothing companies would lose money if they sold less bags. So no pockets for you!

MaBumble · 20/09/2012 18:04

No pockets on women's clothes has got nothing to do with spoiling the line. A while back M&S made a big deal out of work suits with real pockets. Which I thought was fab as I need to carry round phone, pens & access card at work.

They found their sales of hand bags dropped by a 3rd.

Next season, no pockets ...

samandi · 20/09/2012 18:58

Yes, I suspected it might have had something to do with handbag sales ... and I have actually been shopping today to look for a small, plain adjustable over the shoulder bag to put stuff in ... could I find one? No. Only fancy buckled leather bags, bags with glittery owls gazing back at me, bags with no strap at all let alone an over the shoulder adjustable strap, ffs! I'm now wondering if it's part of a ploy to make women better targets for muggers and opportunistic thieves.

LMAO about the "line" thing ... can't believe a shop assistant actually said that. How patronising and stupid. Urgh.

OP posts:
MuddlingMackem · 20/09/2012 19:51

You can tell I don't do shopping unless I have to, but do people seriously buy more handbags? That never occurred to me. Surely you have a few to cover what you need and then you use them until they wear out and need replacing? I get that there are people who have a weakness for handbags, just as there are for shoes, or rings, etc, but really, women generally actually go and buy another handbag just because their new suit has rubbish pockets.

The mind boggles!

Dogsmom · 20/09/2012 19:55

I'm the odd one out because I don't want pockets, purely from a vanity point of view because I already have big hips and the extra bulkiness of pockets makes them look even more vast.

Plus I like any excuse to buy a handbag....

MadderHat · 21/09/2012 08:20

Handbags are great for thieves, much easier to steal or steal from...

Am I sad? I had two dresses hand made for me to fit, for smart day / casual evening wear. One in a thick cotton and one in tafetta. I insisted they had decent pockets. Oddly enough (perhaps because they are very, very, very well made) putting (even bulky) stuff in the pockets does not affect the dress or make it look lumpy.
