To expect Sainsburys to refund all these items?

I meal plan so only buy what i need.
We are going away tomorrow so wont be cooking until Monday night.

Open chicken tonight, dated the 10/9 and its green and stinking.

I got home at 6 so even then dinner woudnt be ready until 7.30 (we usually eat at 6). So too late for me to go and exchange, come home and then start cooking (with a two yr old in tow). We have decided to go to the chippy instead.

So AIBU to ask sainsbury to refund me, not only the chicken but the tarragon, pastry, carrotts, pepper and mushrooms which have also been wasted due to shitty chicken?

The chicken absolutely ! The other stuff will keep or can be adapted so no.

TheWonderfulFanny · 07/09/2012 18:39

Well everything else will keep on the fridge till Monday, and if the chicken's that rank you could be in for an extra voucher anyway - make sure there's someone else at customer services when you show them the packet so they're on their best behaviour?

iklboo · 07/09/2012 18:39

Yes to the chicken. Everything else will keep fine in the fridge until Monday.

annoakley · 07/09/2012 18:40

Chicken yes, the rest yabu.

Petsinmypudenda · 07/09/2012 18:40

Could you really not use the extra veg?
The chicken is fair enough, but not the rest

lurkedtoolong · 07/09/2012 18:40

Definitely the chicken, but not the other stuff. The veggies and tarragon will keep for a few days and the pastry will either keep or can be frozen.

YingTongIddleIPo · 07/09/2012 18:41

Or ask for a redelivery next week

Chicken is the one item I often find smelly and full of bacteria before the use-by date. I have thrown away more chicken than any other item, I think. Other things seem to keep well past it and I will use (if smells fine, doesn't look visibly mouldy) but smelly rank chicken is the worst, it's not just Sainsburys.

PotteringAlong · 07/09/2012 18:43

Make vegetable pasties for tea instead? Veggie pie?

YingTongIddleIPo · 07/09/2012 18:43

Usually chicken is fine. It's the plastic that makes it smell so much I think.

EllenParsons · 07/09/2012 18:43

I wouldn't expect a refund for the veg etc, only the chicken, but yes like others have said I would appreciate an extra voucher for the grossness and inconvenience of getting and needing to return a rotten chicken!

dearprudence · 07/09/2012 18:44

Well I was going to say YWBU for eating Chicken Tonight, but then I realised you meant chicken that you opened tonight Grin

They won't refund the rest of the stuff just because the chicken's off, but if you're very nice about it you might get some kind of voucher out of them.

PavlovtheCat · 07/09/2012 18:45

Yes, all of it if it is not going to last. But if the other stuff will last until you get back then just the chicken. But definitely that.

They will refund you it without a problem i would think, the chicken anyway.

kinkyfuckery · 07/09/2012 18:46

Did you pick the chicken yourself, or was it delivered? If it was delivered, why on earth would you have a shopping delivery today when you are going away until Monday?

mosschops30 · 07/09/2012 18:49

But ive already had the veg since sunday so it needed to be cooked tonight.

mosschops30 · 07/09/2012 18:51

Yabu to expect them to refund food which is perfectly good. The chicken yes (although I would have probably frozen it if purchased so far in advance) but not the rest

QueenofJacksDreams · 07/09/2012 18:55

Unless the veg is on the turn already it'll be fine! Especially the carrots I've had carrots in my fridge for a month before they start to look a little sad and bendy. If you're that worried par cook the veg and freeze the mushrooms and peppers will be fine in a stew/spag bol type dish.

To be fair its hardly Sainsburys fault that you brought the veg on Sunday and haven't bothered with it until now!

ShutTheFrontDoor · 07/09/2012 18:56

You bought a chicken on Sunday and didn't cook till Friday? See if I buy a chicken I cook it within 2 days max.
You will get a refund as its still in date. I think if you take everything back on Monday and explain then you should get a refund on everything, sainsburys are good with refunds, and you have a good reason for a full refund plus a bit extra for the inconvenience.

lisad123 · 07/09/2012 18:58

Tbh I always freeze my meats until day/morning of needing to be used. I find it doesn't keep to use by date in my fridge, everything does Confused

mosschops30 · 07/09/2012 19:01

I never freeze meat if im going to eat it within the date, mostly because i forget to get things out the freezer.
IMHO if it says 10th then it should be ok to eat on 7th.

OP posts:
QueenofJacksDreams · 07/09/2012 19:05

So you purchased the chicken on the 2nd with a sell by of the 10th? Shock I have never had such a long lived piece of meat mines usually within 4-5 days of the purchase at most I honestly wouldn't trust meat with such a long sell by makes me nervous of whats preserving it to be honest.

GhostShip · 07/09/2012 19:07

I would not be eating chicken on a friday that I'd bought on a Sunday. Unless it had been frozen.

mosschops30 · 07/09/2012 19:08

God, judgey pants tonight!
Its not my fault the chicken is off, its within date and im taking it back!
Just wanted to know about the veg
