To expect Sainsburys to refund all these items?

I meal plan so only buy what i need.
We are going away tomorrow so wont be cooking until Monday night.

Open chicken tonight, dated the 10/9 and its green and stinking.

I got home at 6 so even then dinner woudnt be ready until 7.30 (we usually eat at 6). So too late for me to go and exchange, come home and then start cooking (with a two yr old in tow). We have decided to go to the chippy instead.

So AIBU to ask sainsbury to refund me, not only the chicken but the tarragon, pastry, carrotts, pepper and mushrooms which have also been wasted due to shitty chicken?

When did you notice it go green?

I suspect there was nothing wrong with the chicken. Just the labelling was wrong.

mosschops30 · 07/09/2012 19:13

I didnt notice until i took it out of the fridge tonight to cook

It won't hurt to ask.

FamiliesShareGerms · 07/09/2012 19:25

Gosh, bit harsh blaming the OP for buying meat too far in advance! If it says BB 10th Sept, it should be fine to eat up to and including 10th Sept. Regardless of whether it was bought on a Sat, Tues or whenever.

OP, you?ll get a refund for the chicken, and prob a goodwill £10 voucher as well (based on what I got for a four pint of milk that had already turned by the time I got it home). Asking for a refund for the other stuff is pushing it, though. Nothing wrong with it, so no obligation for them to refund it.

Suggest phoning to check whether the store want you to bring a rancid chicken back into store or whether they will accept your word on it.

YABU to expect a refund of everything else

YANBU to expect refund of chicken and an apology

YANBU to keep meat in the fridge for a week when it's within date

Although I'm surprised at the length of the shelf life (8 days for chicken is a long time) , sounds like a labelling cock up to me.

chocolatespiders · 07/09/2012 19:31

I would expect a refund for the trip to the chippy to Smile

iklboo · 07/09/2012 19:31

Families the milk had already turned by the time you got home? How far from the shop do you live? Grin

YingTongIddleIPo · 07/09/2012 19:36

Wow! That's some long use by date there!

DameEnidsOrange · 07/09/2012 19:39

YANBU

Chicken does seem to have quite a long date life, even though it probably shouldn't

Enfyshedd · 07/09/2012 20:24

I second the comment about Sainsburys being good for refunds/apologetic compensation - my DP rang them after my cat was sick after eating their own brand cat biscuits, and they sent a £5 giftcard by way of an apology.

I do think YABU for wanting a refund for everything other than the chicken, but it might be worth mentioning it if you call the customer helpline.

MarysBeard · 07/09/2012 20:36

Meat should be fine up to and including the use by date, but I always sniff & look at it just to make sure. YANBU re the chicken.

MNhoneydragonHQ · 07/09/2012 20:45

It's not a cock (Arf) up at all. That's a fine use by date. It simply depends how quickly the chickens got on the shelf from its DOK date, which won't be on the chicken. So 10 day even up to two weeks can be ok depending on the meat.

Probably was bacteria or something foreign in chicken at source that caused it to go bad.

When I had off chicken I called Sainsburys and they simply refunded me via voucher so I could dispose of it. They also rounded up a little extra for the hassle of having to resource ingredients else where Smile

mosschops30 · 07/09/2012 20:50

Well Sainsburys were very good, refunded the chicken and all the veg and gave us a gift voucher on top of all that Smile
man was very apologetic.

Chips, curry sauce and sausage in batter was much better than chicken pie Grin

Good on them. I do like Sainsbos.

FamiliesShareGerms · 07/09/2012 20:55

iklboo ha ha, no, not a long trek over hill and dale! The milk must have been left out of the fridge in store or something

DayShiftDoris · 07/09/2012 22:18

You rang a supermarket because the cat was sick when it ate the biscuits Hmm

I have the green, stinky chicken issue well before BBD with Asda on a semi-regular basis... they never give extra tokens as way of apology but their security guard did swap it under the half closed shutter at 4.03pm one Sunday.

GhostShip · 08/09/2012 10:30

enfy sorry but that's ridiculous.
