To think that kids like fruit?

BrittaPerry · 02/09/2012 21:40

Fruit is sweet. Kids like sweet things. So, kids like fruit.

Yes?

Just sick of people being 'amazed' at children asking for fruit, and saying they are really good.

Of course my children nag for apples! They are tasty! If anything, I have to stop them eating too much as it gives them bad bellies.

This isn't boasting, it's just a fact.

I'm just a bit baffled. I'm a bit pushy in other ways, but this doesn't need pushyness because, well, who doesn't like sweet stuff?

I've never heard of anyone being amazed at children asking for fruit Confused

ripsishere · 02/09/2012 21:43

YABU. Mine doesn't like fruit. She is 11 and would never eat another piece of fruit again if she could get away with it.
Grapes are the exception, she'll eat black, seedless grapes but only if they have been in the fridge and only about 10.

Goldidi · 02/09/2012 21:43

My dd2 is 2.5 and really doesn't like much fruit. I was amazed that she doesn't like it but wouldn't be at all surprised by a child that does like a lot of fruit. Dd2 loves vegetables and would eat broccoli all day every day but it's a battle to get her to eat fruit.

SirBoobAlot · 02/09/2012 21:43

DS would live on fruit and veg if he had the choice. A lot of people just feed their children crap though.

Jinsei · 02/09/2012 21:43

DD eats tons of fruit, but nobody has ever found that amazing. Confused

melonandpapayaandmango · 02/09/2012 21:44

nor me! Mine do enjoy fruit but DD is fussy about the texture of some fruits so for instance she likes mandarin oranges but not 'real' oranges, I was the same and used to dislike melon, I love it now as my username indicates

we're a fruity family! Grin

WelshMaenad · 02/09/2012 21:44

Yeah, I get this because my kids would rather have an apple from the shop than chocolate sometimes. It's not sliced raw liver! Apples are yummy!

IWillOnlyEatBeans · 02/09/2012 21:44

One of my DS's friends will not eat fruit, but she will drink fruit smoothies.

DS would eat fruit all day if I let him. He wont touch any form of potato though.

WorraLiberty · 02/09/2012 21:44

I've never heard of anyone being amazed either?

Most kids will like some sort of fruit.

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 02/09/2012 21:44

I struggle to get fruit in my 8 YO DD, but my 21 month old cant get enough. They are chalk and cheese.

melonandpapayaandmango · 02/09/2012 21:45

welsh,my DD spent her sweet money on a banana and some strawberries yesterday, my kids are so rock n roll Grin

StripyShoes · 02/09/2012 21:46

My kids eat so much fruit it is sending my broke! We go through at least two packets each of apples, strawberries, bananas and oranges per week. Plus tinned fruit for pudding. I am looking forward to school going back purely so my shopping bill goes down again!

But noone has ever been surprised at it. Except maybe the fact they can eat four of five pieces a day and not get upset tummies.

LST · 02/09/2012 21:46

My DS is 10mo. And at the minute we have yet to find something he won't eat.

He eats lemon!!! Shock

Coca · 02/09/2012 21:47

YANBU to be surprised that people are "impressed" by your dc's choice of food. I have one dd who would happily live on carbs and meat and one who is practically a self imposed vegetarian. I worry about both!

TyrannoWearsGoldKnickers · 02/09/2012 21:48

No, you're going to have to tell me!

EllenParsons · 02/09/2012 21:49

Not sure what kind of people you know who are amazed that your DC eat fruit Confused

akaemmafrost · 02/09/2012 21:49

My ds drinks orange juice and apple juice that is the extent of his fruit consumption. He hates it, always has.

So yes, personally I am surprised and Envy when I see kids requesting and tucking into fruit.

YANBU- some people don't like fruit so of course some DC don't like it but i think they are the exception. I think the people who are amazed (and i have met a few) either eat crap themselves, feed their family crap or have experience of fussy eaters.

BrittaPerry · 02/09/2012 21:49

We get it ll the time.

'ok kids, you can choose a treat'
'ooh, can I have an apple?'

-shop assistant/random passerby- 'ooh, you have her well trained!'

Or, worse, I get people trying t make out tha my kids are deprived and tht I am no fun. They get sweets too, they just happen to like fruit.

Or endless tips on 'persuading' children to eat fruit.

Almost all kids I know like fruit and I've never seen anyone amazed by it except my friend who's been living in Texas for the past 10 yrs.
Her young children do not eat fruit and it never occurred to her to give them some.

Coca · 02/09/2012 21:51

Dh's grand parents tried putting sugar on the dcs strawberries the loons

cookielove · 02/09/2012 21:53

I only occasionally ate fruit as a child and only sliced up granny smiths on a plate with toast Hmm i even refused it as a baby. I still don't now unless i have a real craving for it and i will only eat granny smiths, water melon, and pineapple. My mum would be amazed if i asked for fruit or pass out from the shock of it

LST · 02/09/2012 21:54

tyranno we were in a pub beer garden and DS was in his push chair I had a sparkling water with lemon in it but took the lemon and the ice out and put it in DS's empty food bowl. My DM then said what's he eating and low and behold he was sucking a lemon. We tried it out the next time and he eat two whole pieces. He doesn't even flinch or shudder or anything!

I don't think he has taste buds..

FairLadyRantALot · 02/09/2012 21:54

taste isn't everything though...
my 3 Boys are all a bit random at what they like and what they don't...and they will eat certain fruits and not others... etc....
