To think that kids like fruit?

Fruit is sweet. Kids like sweet things. So, kids like fruit.

Yes?

Just sick of people being 'amazed' at children asking for fruit, and saying they are really good.

Of course my children nag for apples! They are tasty! If anything, I have to stop them eating too much as it gives them bad bellies.

This isn't boasting, it's just a fact.

I'm just a bit baffled. I'm a bit pushy in other ways, but this doesn't need pushyness because, well, who doesn't like sweet stuff?

At the moment all my toddler will eat is fruit. I would love for her to eat some crappy carbohydrate or even naice ham!

I'm only amazed that she rarely has diarrhoea.

I'm enjoying it while it lasts and being grateful for the encouragement it gives to me and Dp who aren't really fruit eaters.

Anonymumous · 02/09/2012 21:55

My eldest son will eat fruit until it's coming out of his ears. The youngest was a nightmare to wean and was two and a half before he finally deigned to eat half a banana and admit that it was actually quite nice. He has a raging sweet tooth as well, but not for fruit apparently. (He was eating a lemon yesterday though - I was making lemon drizzle cakes and he picked up a half lemon and just started munching on it.)

BrittaPerry · 02/09/2012 21:56

Even school and nursery feel the need to tell me that they know dd is well brought up because she always finishes her fruit and asks or more Hmm

I mean, she is well brought up, Grin but the liking of sweet things isn't part of it!

My dcs love lemon too LST (from toddlerhood upwards, still do aged 6 & 8) - they used to beg for wedges that they would suck...

Passmethecrisps · 02/09/2012 21:59

As a child my favourite thing ever was cucumber. When we went to people's houses my siblings got biscuits and I got cucumber. On treat nights I would choose an exotic fruit over crisps or chocolate. No reason why I would be like this and my siblings not so just personal taste. Am now 30 weeks pregnant and cannot get enough fruit over my throat.

LST · 02/09/2012 22:01

We have yet to try a lime. But he does like raw onion Hmm

I just hope he continues to like everything.

Groovee · 02/09/2012 22:01

My son disliked fruit for a long time. Yet he'd never turn down veg. He's always been savoury than sweet. Whereas his sister has a sweet tooth.

TyrannoWearsGoldKnickers · 02/09/2012 22:02

Grin See I was wondering if maybe I'd found a kindred spirit. My way of testing to see if 10mo (at the time) DS liked marmite was to smother some on a bit of bread and pass it to him, to the utter horror of DH. DS did this: Confused Shock Hmm Angry

I hadn't even thought about how strong it is, I just thought 'Oooh I love a bit of marmite me, I'll see how it goes down with the babe'.

Loved the idea of you just passing your DC a lemon to much on!

Kabooooom · 02/09/2012 22:04

I get this also. When at a relatives house, DS1 always asks for fruit, and is told "There is crisps/chocolate/sweets/ice cream in the kitchen, don't you want any of them?" and are always shocked, no matter him always being the same, that he declines and says he wants fruit. Why, I don't know.

pinkyp · 02/09/2012 22:07

I think all, well most children like fruit don't they? I don't think it's amazing. Perhaps the shopkeeper was suprised your children asked for fruit as most have fruit at home and usually want something different from a shop?

janji · 02/09/2012 22:08

Given the option my dc always choose veg over fries etc in restaurants. They are much better trained than myself and dh! My ds's fave veg is Brussels sprouts; he jumps for joy when they begin appearing in the green grocers!

Lueji · 02/09/2012 22:09

My DS would rather eat fruit salad than chocolate mousse.

He is clearly not my son and has surprised a few waiters.

BlackberryIce · 02/09/2012 22:10

The nursery said your dc is 'well brought up' because they eat fruit?? Hmm

Did they honestly? You sound desperate to come across as smug, but too many people here are saying their dc love fruit too!

BlackberryIce · 02/09/2012 22:10

IMO of course! Grin

ThePigOnTheWall · 02/09/2012 22:10

Mine both love fruit and eat 3 or 4 portions a day. I don't think that's amazing tbh

I do, however, have the only 2 kids in Britain who don't like bananas Hmm

NamesKerry · 02/09/2012 22:11

My daughter (22) has always loved fruit. It's me who has the problem. I can't abide anything sour. I love the look and smell of strawberries but the taste brings tears to my eyes. I will safely eat pears, bananas and melon but anything else I treat with suspicion. I never used to be like this and tbh I hate the way I am over sour food. It's pathetic. I will literally cry if I try to eat a starburst or a skittle. Maybe I have extra sensitive taste buds!

LST · 02/09/2012 22:15

tyranno that's how we know he likes onion and bovril Grin

StokeEduville · 02/09/2012 22:17

PigOnTheWall You have the only 2 sensible children. Bananas are grim.

I was a child and now adult who hates most fruit. I will tolerate a nectarine, some melon or strawberries if the winds in the right direction, but I'd far rather a bowl of broccoli or some carrots.

princelypurpleparrot · 02/09/2012 22:21

DS1 loves fruit and eats loads, but if he had the chance he'd eat cake all day Grin. DS2 seems be turning into a bit of a fruit fan too. It's great as I don't really eat it at all (except mangoes, they are so lurverly).

My DM, and DH's family, are all amazed by how much they like fruit, mainly because they all have a pretty appalling diet and my DN's would rather lick the toilet than eat a banana or an apple (because unfortunately for them they've had a pretty rubbish diet from the start so were never given the taste).

WaterGypsy · 02/09/2012 22:21

YANBU OP. My DD loves fruit, and would choose it over sweets everytime. I'm always Confusedby the amount of people who comment - it's really not that suprising!

BrittaPerry · 02/09/2012 22:21

I don't think it is other parents, more people without kids, or whose kids have grown up.

I'm really not smug, I'm surprised that pol think it is some thing to be smug about. I know most children like fruit...I would have thought that was obvious from my title and OP...as that is my entire point...

Ok, if I am fabricating people assuming kids don't like fruit, why are there so many tips for getting children to eat fruit? For every child I know, that just involves putting it in arms reach...

It's probably lingering from the last generation where I and many others refused to eat fruit....... Because it was TINNED!!

The 70's were big in the 'new' convenience foods that would keep forever

I'm always pleasantly surprised by the fact that every single child I've ever fed (15-20ish) has wolfed down their broccoli. (Broccoli is my default playdate veg because it represents a tiny overlap on the Venn of the DCs tastes)

I'm actually shocked by DS's addiction to Brussels sprouts.

But fruit? Actually I agree with OP, this is the sort of thing older people are impressed by because they've gained the impression from the Daily Mail that all modern children exist on a diet of Maccy D's and Red Bull.
