Kindle rage

Got a kindle last summer to take on holiday. When I got back the screen broke (it wasn't damaged or anything, just wouldn't switch on one day). I phoned Amazon and they sent me a replacement - great.

I've been using it on and off all year and I just took it on holiday again - once again the screen went. I phoned Amazon and because it is now just out of warranty they can't replace it for me, just offer a discount on another one. The warranty is a year from the purchase of the first kindle rather than the replacement which means this kindle has lasted less than a year.

Is it reasonable to expect something like this to last more than a year? And would I be stupid to buy another one, even at a discount price, when it's pretty likely to break again?

I hate turning my kindle off, hate the whole wait a hundred years with my finger on the teeny wee switch getting sore. Surely there could've been a better mechanism for that!

But you´re not really getting an advantage in terms of reading time, CoteWink

CoteDAzur · 05/09/2012 07:49

I'm saving turn-off/turn-on time. Seconds, I tell you!

Just that I don't like doing things that don't make sense, especially when I'm told to do them Grin

diddl · 05/09/2012 07:52

I know what you mean as for me the "airplane mode" should mean that it´s OK to use on a plane all the time.

Well, you´re saving seconds-I might let you have that-depending on what it is you´re reading at the timeGrin

another one here...my kindle got the screen of death on holiday last week - 13 months old, spoke via online chat yesterday with amazon and they offerred me 20% discount on new models - I pointed out that was for a model without 3G or keyboard and they then offerred me a new (or refurbished one) for £50...but only 3 month warranty
I love my kindle but not prepared to buy a new one every year.

i shall reply to the email with the blurb on the sale of goods act
has anyone elae had any other response back yet?

SoupDragon · 05/09/2012 08:20

Even a phone only needs to be put in flight-safe mode for take off/landing, not turned off.

iggi777 · 05/09/2012 09:36

Jemw it's like you're renting it, isn't it, for one year only Hmm

geraldine62 · 05/09/2012 11:30

No response here. Not sure how they can offer refurbished models when they say they don't repair them? I would've been happy with a free repair!

What a coincidence that I should spot this thread today. My kindle was working fine about an hour ago. Now it is just a white screen with the enter password box in the middle. Except it isn't responding and I can't enter the password. Anyone else had anything like this? Is it bad? [inserts worried look]

geraldine62 · 05/09/2012 19:40

I haven't heard of that problem librarian - usually the screen just goes blank with a few lines. It's worth calling help to see if it can be replaced but if it's out of warranty you'll have a fight on your hands to get them to replace it.

Librarian ring customer support they are fantastic and talk you through all sorts of 'hold the button for 20 seconds, turn off router, turn on again' etc etc.

valiumredhead · 05/09/2012 20:57

They have all sorts of little glitches that can be righted by the support team.

MNhoneydragonHQ · 05/09/2012 22:44

Still being ignored here. Wish I'd got that level of technical support Val.

Update for anyone who cares.. Amazon finally credited my account with £109 after I threatened them with small claims! Took several emails but I'm so glad I persevered!
