Kindle rage

Got a kindle last summer to take on holiday. When I got back the screen broke (it wasn't damaged or anything, just wouldn't switch on one day). I phoned Amazon and they sent me a replacement - great.

I've been using it on and off all year and I just took it on holiday again - once again the screen went. I phoned Amazon and because it is now just out of warranty they can't replace it for me, just offer a discount on another one. The warranty is a year from the purchase of the first kindle rather than the replacement which means this kindle has lasted less than a year.

Is it reasonable to expect something like this to last more than a year? And would I be stupid to buy another one, even at a discount price, when it's pretty likely to break again?

What's happening with it now op?

valiumredhead · 03/09/2012 13:31

I´ve got the Kindle4-turn it off by holding the on/off button until the screen goes blank.

Needs to be off like that when on an aeroplane.

So you can't read your kindle when you fly? Confused You just need to put it to wireless free, surely?

My battery lasts for 4 weeks - I have had it a year.

diddl · 03/09/2012 13:35

Needs to be off for take off & landing.

CoteDAzur · 03/09/2012 13:38

I use it every day and recharge once every two weeks or so.

I often travel with it and never turned it off on planes.

diddl · 03/09/2012 13:41

"I often travel with it and never turned it off on planes. "

Have you never had an announcement then to turn of all mobiles etc for take off & landing?

SwedishEdith · 03/09/2012 13:48

But only if in wifi mode surely?

WerthersUnOriginal · 03/09/2012 13:48

I bought a Kindle Touch at the beginning of July and within a couple of weeks it was behaving strangely. When I was turning a page it would jump ahead pages and pages randomly dumping me way ahead in the book and I'd lose my placeConfused

Amazon have replaced it, but my new one has also done it a couple of times. I wonder if it's a glitch with Kindles?

When I'm reading, I do like to refer back to bits in the book now and then, especially if it's a big book and I want to remind myself of something. Messing about back and forth seems to upset the Kindles I've had. I have become obsessive about 'marking my page' so at least I know where I am in the book if it happens.

honeydragon · 03/09/2012 13:51

How are you getting on *Geraldine? Amazon have now settled for ignoring me Hmm

A brilliant strategy I might add Hmm

diddl · 03/09/2012 13:51

"But only if in wifi mode surely?"

I´ve always turned it off completely for (take off/landing), as I thought that was what was requested?

And I only thought it could be used in flight in "aeroplane mode".

SwedishEdith · 03/09/2012 13:54

Have to add, I've not flown with mine and have only just worked out that you can turn it off so could well be talking out of my derriere Grin

CoteDAzur · 03/09/2012 17:00

diddl - You don't have to take off your Kindle, unless it is the 3G one. Explained here.

Carolyn Evans of the British Airline Pilots Association (Balpa) admits that "an e-ink reader with 3G connectivity disabled would not cause a problem", but adds that "it is too difficult for the cabin staff to confirm who has got their 3G on, and who hasn't".

geraldine62 · 03/09/2012 18:19

Amazon are ignoring me too Honey. I said I'd give them 2 weeks to respond. I am tempted to join twitter so I can harangue them - what do you think?!

OP posts:
janelikesjam · 03/09/2012 18:22

I've never got angry at a nice sweet old-fashioned book Grin

CoteDAzur · 03/09/2012 18:24

I did. All those 1000+ page books I had to carry around town did it for me.

diddl · 03/09/2012 19:07

This is from Amazon "You can use your Kindle safely on an aircraft; you must however make sure that the wireless feature is switched off. It is easy to turn off Kindle's wireless feature so that you can read when the flight crew says it's okay to use electronic devices."

So, I switch off for take off & landing as requested by the crew.

Sallyingforth · 03/09/2012 20:30

It's not just the safety issue: the crew would prefer you to listen to the safety briefing rather than play with your Kindle/phone/latest electronic gadget even though you have heard it a hundred times before

honeydragon · 03/09/2012 21:13

geraldine learning to use twitter may be the next step

Carpediem2007 · 03/09/2012 22:54

Dh received his new kindle as replacement for his 13-14months old one today. He did have a bit of a go at the service girl on the phone and (sadly for the girl on the phone) it worked!

geraldine62 · 03/09/2012 23:28

Ok, have just tweeted the twats (I think)

diddl it only meeds to be off like that when taking off or landing the rest of the time on the plane you just have to switch the wifi off, I love my Kindle and read a lot. The screen has frozen a couple of times but I just switch it off and wait for a while and it comes back.

CoolaSchmoola · 04/09/2012 00:33

Had my keyboard 3G for two years now, use it a LOT, charge it every couple of weeks, and have only had to reboot it once.

diddl · 04/09/2012 07:16

"diddl it only meeds to be off like that when taking off or landing the rest of the time on the plane you just have to switch the wifi off, I love my Kindle and read a lot."

Yes, I know.

I only switch it off for take off/landing.

Other times it´s in "airplane mode"

It was a PP who said that they never turn theirs off at all when flying & I queried that, but don´t see a reply.

CoteDAzur · 04/09/2012 19:48

The reply was in the link I provided but I suppose you didn't read it.

(1) Because of the way e-ink devices work, they draw no power when displaying either the words on the page or the wallpaper, and so should pose no more of a threat to an aircraft than the hardback the person in the next seat is reading.

(2) Carolyn Evans of the British Airline Pilots Association (Balpa) admits that "an e-ink reader with 3G connectivity disabled would not cause a problem", but adds that "it is too difficult for the cabin staff to confirm who has got their 3G on, and who hasn't".

They tell you to turn everything electronic off because the regulations are uniform and rather colorblind on this subject. However, knowing that my Kindle in no way endangers the flight, I leave it on wallpaper during takeoff and landing.

Hope that helps.

diddl · 04/09/2012 21:04

I did read it yes, sorry.

But I tend to do what the crew ask.

Oh, so although you don´t switch it off, you don´t sit reading it either?

CoteDAzur · 04/09/2012 21:19

Yes.

I, on the other hand, am a free spirit with an innate distrust of authority Grin

You should have seen me argue with brain-dead Lufthansa bimbos who said I couldn't use my own baby seat belt on the plane but instead should just hold on to DD. Clearly, they had not seen Fearless and had not learned the concept of Inertia in elementary physics.

If anyone's interested . (Scene from Fearless with Jeff Bridges)
