after taking Samsung to court over copy right stating that Samsung have abused the law and copied the i phone. Or are apple just a bit gutted that Samsung have made an equally good product which means apple no longer have the phone market and have to be competitive with their prices.
I for one refuse to pay the silly price tag apple used to charge for i phone & feel that other smart phones (namely the galaxy range) are just as good yet cheaper and with the android market & Google play I would be a mug to buy into apple.
has anyone read apples ridiculous claims for suing Samsung?

my bro told me about their "patents" yesterday - apprently if you look at them they are ridiculous - eg they have patented the iphone shape - a rectangle with rounded corners - hardly revolutionary. Also a solar powered device which isn't too different from solar powered calculators around over 20yrs ago - but the judges awarding the patents seem to just let them go through

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 29/08/2012 08:26

I agree that it's ridiculous. But I'm still getting the new iPhone when it's out in a few weeks Grin

Tee2072 · 29/08/2012 08:42

If it's patented, it's patented.

Also, I have both an Apple and an Android device. They are both good. Apple's is better.

pinkdelight · 29/08/2012 08:48

I believe it's a whole business in itself - an income stream from gaining patents and making money suing on them. Bloody lawyers innit. And modern life. Ugh.

Kayano · 29/08/2012 08:48

Well the grid of four app icons across is very similar isn't it. There are a few similarities but I think apple are going a bit ott with it all

Their killing any competition with lawsuits

Sallyingforth · 29/08/2012 09:29

Similar legal cases in Asia and Europe were thrown out.
Only the US supported Apple.
Go figure.

thebeesnees79 · 29/08/2012 09:31

Kayano that's my issue with apple, they don't want to compete with anyone they want the whole market to their greedy self.
They can't bear the fact that someone has made a comparable product which is better value, get over it Mr apple lol.
oh and just to add that Samsung make a large number of the component parts for apple lol

It's the patent office you should criticise!

funkybuddah · 29/08/2012 09:38

I saw it reported that Steve Jobs vowed to destroy Android.

That to me is bad form, take the competition on to keep yourself fresh etc, don't destroy it because you know your ideas are limited.

The 5 is only out as late as it is because they wanted to see what the Galaxy s3 had to offer and how it did.

I am a full on Fandroid but do accept that apple products are good but the high prices and small warranties aren't worth it to me.

Hate being tied to iTunes too, I like to use an open source handset so I can do what I like with it not what apple deem ok.

Hulababy · 29/08/2012 09:38

I still prefer the apple products.
I have an iPhone abd live it. Dh has Samsung galaxy s2 abd it just isn't as good. Might be cheaper but it's cheaper because it's not as good.
For now I'll stick with apple

Kayano · 29/08/2012 09:42

DH galaxy 3 is too huge for my midget hands. I find it uncomfortable to use!

thebeesnees79 · 29/08/2012 09:45

I like the fact that android can be messed with a little. the amount of stuff it can do is limitless as opposed to the restrictions apple have. For example I can use my android as a keyboard wireless for our pc or to control music on our sound hub etc. anyway I am not going to get into an apple is better or worse than android fight. The point is that Apple are contentious fools to think that you can patent a shape or a command on a phone, its silly, all phones are a similar shape. P.s apple its called competition so get over it!
They still make heaps of profit it just means they can no longer charge £35+ a month because people won't pay it if the galaxy s3 is only £22 a month

The US patent system is badly broken. And Apple are tremendous hypocrites regarding look and feel given the huge amount of ideas from other companies they've ripped off been inspired by over the years.

Haberdashery · 29/08/2012 09:58

I think which is better is a matter of opinion. Personally, I have had iPhones and Android and prefer Android.

I do think the entire patent fight is ludicrous though (and suspect the judge did too, as reflected in the v small settlement that was directed).

MrsReiver · 29/08/2012 10:03

I saw it reported that Steve Jobs vowed to destroy Android.

Everytime I read this my blood boils! Along with his ridiculous claim that Android is a stolen technology, it's based on UNIX just like iOS!

I read recently Apple patented the pinch to zoom finger gesture - I wonder what Pierre Wellner thinks about that since he was using that gesture on his Digital Desk back in 1991.

SoupDragon · 29/08/2012 10:05

the amount of stuff it can do is limitless as opposed to the restrictions apple have You can always jailbreak the iPhone.

Apple are contentious fools to think that you can patent a shape or a command on a phone No they're not, because the patent office let them do it. If it's ridiculous, then it is the Patent Office's fault.

thebeesnees79 · 29/08/2012 10:22

yes it is the patent office that are part to blame. seriously though pinch to zoom patent?! come on, rectangle shape!! you can't patent a shape. I think its the American patent office who are to blame, nothing that ridiculous would ever get approved in Europe. but then again we are not the sue type culture that is America. I think this is another debate lol

OP posts:
MrsReiver · 29/08/2012 10:25

Yup - pinch to zoo has been patented. Well not quite - as the article says "It's steps 5, 6, and 7 that are critically important here: Apple doesn't have a patent on "pinch-to-zoom" generally, but rather pinching to zoom, and then pinching to zoom again within some fixed period of time."

But still..... it seems a bit ridiculous.

If you want to get really angry about patent law in the US beesknees google Patent Trolls.

thebeesnees79 · 29/08/2012 10:33

haha thanks for the tip!

KateBeckett · 29/08/2012 10:34

I thought the while thing started because Samsung tried suing apple saying that they had stolen their ideas?? Sure I heard it on the news that Samsung's case had been rejected and ape were making a counter claim?

not certain- half remembered news programme/ convo with DP!

KateBeckett · 29/08/2012 10:34

Apple not ape!!!

ByTheWay1 · 29/08/2012 10:35

Refuse to buy into the "world according to Apple" any company whose main manufacturing base (in China) requires suicide nets to stop staff jumping off the roof has something fundamentally wrong somewhere....

ReindeerBollocks · 29/08/2012 10:35

I think they lost on the shape patent didn't they?

Point was the jury took one look at the iPhone and then at the samsung - it was quite blatantly a copy, so they found for apple.

I have to say the emails from Samsung saying they weree going to copy it probably didn't help their case much.

Snorbs · 29/08/2012 10:48

KateBeckett, Apple first sued Samsung in the US and elsewhere back in April 2011. Samsung then counter-sued Apple. Many of Apple's suits have been thrown out, as have many of Samsung's.

MrsReiver · 29/08/2012 10:55

Reindeer no - apple have the shape of the iphone patented

"Apple says that it patented a number of elements used in the iPhone and iPad ....and the general shape of the iPad (the "D'889" patent). It says Samsung infringed them all with a number of phones and tablets"
