Really, who decided that every social gathering should be a dressing up session? I hate dressing up and never feel nice so why do I have to do it? Mainly moaning because if I am honest I am a size 16 and all the other women look fab in skimpy outfits and I just feel a melon. Envy Oh and the blooming cost of it all. Anyway AIBU to moan like hell but still feel the peer pressure to dress up like a wally anyway? Ps any ideas on being a villain great fully received!

I love them. But you have the wrong friends. We have fancy dress parties and none of the women come in skimpy outfits.

glasscompletelybroken · 21/08/2012 14:17

I'm with you on this! I don't go out that much and when I do I want to look nice - not ridiculous!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/08/2012 14:21

Yabu - fancy dress is the best. But grown women wearing skimpy outfits is horrid.

Villain - are you blonde or dark? Do you want to go 'girly' or do you mind suiting up for eg?

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/08/2012 14:23

I had the laziest idea for my friend's party. I took a Starbucks cup in and went as a hypocrite.

Doogle2 · 21/08/2012 14:24

I have dyed red hair medium length. Don't mind being in a suit!

Scour the charity shops for an 80s Power Suit with huge shoulder pads, a handbag, and one of those blouses with the big bow at the neck and go as Mrs Thatcher.
disclaimer: I have made a sweeping generalisation and assumption that you are one of the people on here who loathe dislike her a bit and think of her as a villain, but if you aren't then do the same but lipstick the weird shaped mouth in place and be cherie bliar Grin

SlipperyNipple · 21/08/2012 14:25

You could be a banker!

civilfawlty · 21/08/2012 14:27

YANBU. Im also a size 16 and also hate fancy dressing up. Figures out a while ago that 'competing' with slimmer laydeez who dress us as 'sexy' [insert noun of choice] is pointless. Much better to go as something funny and have a laugh. All time best was Marge Simpson.

MrsRobertDuvallHasRosacea · 21/08/2012 14:32

Totally agree.
Dh refuses to go to anyhing fancy dress.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/08/2012 14:34

Maggie is a good idea.

Bellatrix Lestrange
Delores Umbridge
Mrs Danvers
Dracula
Bride of Frankenstein - not really a villain but a good costume!
The White Witch from Narnia
Medusa
Lady Macbeth (wear a nightie and blood!)

Doogle2 · 21/08/2012 14:35

Pombear - love that idea - thanks.
Civilfawlty- I did the Marge thing too! OH went as Homer.

Doogle2 · 21/08/2012 14:37

Remus- love the Lady Macbeth idea - lots of fake blood over the hands...! Grin

Cruella de ville?

whenyouseeitwaveorcheer · 21/08/2012 14:48

I just came on to say cruella de villetoo! Some manky old fake fur coat from a charity shop and one of those cigarette holders should do it.

Last one I went to was a Bugsy Malone party which I actually didn't mind as got to wear quite a nice flapper dress.

AnyFucker · 21/08/2012 14:54

I hate them too

I find them juvenile

I have no body issues either...I just can't be arsed

but I have been told I am BU about this one here before and called a boring killjoy

happy to be the grown-up though Smile

ditto ....

karaoke, murder-mystery crap, hen nights, baby showers, burlesque, male strippers

the list goes on Grin

Birdsgottafly · 21/08/2012 14:55

I am a size 16

So was i went i went as Princess Fiona (Shrek).

Cruella can just have a wig and a fur wrap, doesn't have to be a fullcoat.

The disney wicked Step Mothers/Witches can be done well at any size.

I love fancy dress, though.

theodorakis · 21/08/2012 14:57

I don't do fancy dress parties or non family or close friend weddings. life is just too short. Also called in sick for my own baby shower. I had heard them giggling about a blindfold. Sod that.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/08/2012 15:02

Annie Wilkes

The Red Queen

Nurse Whatshername from One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest - Ratchett?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/08/2012 15:05

Mrs Lovett from Sweeny Todd

ByTheWay1 · 21/08/2012 15:07

I hate them too - so I just don't go. When asked why I just say I don't like them.

cardibach · 21/08/2012 15:09

I hagte fancy dress. Really, wht's the point? Are your friends all so dull they can't have a laugh without looking stupid?
I just say no, then organise another event on my terms. Or go in ordinary clothes.

AdoraBell · 21/08/2012 15:11

I would not do fancy dress. If I felt coerced I would go as my twin sister. I don't have a twin but if I did we'd be identicalWink

Pandemoniaa · 21/08/2012 15:14

I am fortunate enough to live in an area where dressing up/wearing costumes/doing stuff that requires the wearing of costumes is such a customary part of life that nobody bothers with fancy dress parties. Which are, on the whole, a very lazy option.

limitedperiodonly · 21/08/2012 15:15

I hate them too. I ignore it when people call me a killjoy. They are the same mirthless idiots who try to make you dance at weddings.

It's not because of your size btw. I'm a size 8. My friend is size 20 and has been bigger. She adores fancy dress but only in proper costumes.

Her favourite is a belly dancer. She has the costume from when she took classes. She's pretty good, actually. And she doesn't try to make me join in so that's all right.

Technoviking · 21/08/2012 15:20

I hate "themes" of any kind. They are not "wacky" "fun" or "out there", they are sad and for people who love to attention seek.

Don't worry if that makes me a killjoy, if you invited me to a fancy dress party, I would decline.
