Really, who decided that every social gathering should be a dressing up session? I hate dressing up and never feel nice so why do I have to do it? Mainly moaning because if I am honest I am a size 16 and all the other women look fab in skimpy outfits and I just feel a melon. Envy Oh and the blooming cost of it all. Anyway AIBU to moan like hell but still feel the peer pressure to dress up like a wally anyway? Ps any ideas on being a villain great fully received!

We both used to work for someone who had fancy dress parties in lieu of a personality.

Almost every office gathering was fancy dress and she'd bitch for weeks afterwards about anyone who didn't dress up for spoiling it.

God, I hated that woman. She was truly nasty.

she was in her element when the managing director revealed his love of fancy dress too because she felt her bullying had some clout.

One Christmas his theme was film and TV characters. There were a lot of Reservoir Dogs that year.

I wore normal clothes, as did a couple of men, and she didn't stop bitching about me - but not them.

She went as a nun from Nuns on the Run. Yes, I know it's about Robbie Coltrane and Eric Idle in drag but apparently she hadn't noticed.

Someone drunkenly complimented her on her fantastic Sister Wendy outfit, genuinely thinking she'd come as the speccy art critic nun who was famous at the time. She didn't go on about that party quite as much.

I dare you to go as Dr Evil with a bald cap and grey trouser suit.

BalloonSlayer · 21/08/2012 15:39

My Mum once went as the <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=www.netbrawl.com/uploads/41117581b7d17838d8fc41d505a8ab70.jpg&imgrefurl=www.netbrawl.com/matchup.php?mid%3D21540%26bracketid%3D866&h=400&w=300&sz=28&tbnid=R_Z2gJQaWxL_fM:&tbnh=99&tbnw=74&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dwicked%2Bqueen%2Bsnow%2Bwhite%2Bpictures%26tbm%3Disch%26tbo%3Du&zoom=1&q=wicked+queen+snow+white+pictures&usg=__Digzo3clRv8L-WDIfX5QShJz47k=&docid=i72RcvF5a_yBSM&sa=X&ei=h5wzUMLRK4aM0AWK6IHoBQ&ved=0CEMQ9QEwAQ&dur=1713" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Wicked Queen from Snow White. She had a long dress that was nothing like the one in the cartoon, but had a faintly mediaeval look to it. She wrapped a scarf round her head to get a similar effect. I don't think she had a crown. She did dramatic eye make up. Finally she spent some time in a supermarket looking for one apple that was half green and half red and she found one! She practised offering it silently in a haughty and intimidating manner.

She basically did not look an exact copy but it was totally obvious who she was, she looked great, and it only cost her the price of an apple.

i think they are just controlling. plus I think there are fewer female characters that are any fun.

i still shudder remembering a villians and superheros party.

Mrsjay · 21/08/2012 15:49

YANBu I actually have never been to an adult fancy dress party I have been invited but couldnt face it what with the sexy police womans costumes or sexy wonder woman costumes in the shop

nokidshere · 21/08/2012 16:02

I hate parties anyway regardless of dress code but I would never go to a fancy dress one!

JustTheRightAmountOfWrong · 21/08/2012 16:17

YABU. I LOVE fancy dress. I go all out and hire an outfit, get into character, full make up, etc.

However, superheroes and American cops? outfits are lame; my last outfit was Marie Antoinette. I loved wearing the period dress and the HUGE white wig. I was Frankenstein's bride at Halloween, again I got right into character, white make up, wig full of spiders and cobwebs (not real spiders, mind, I'm not that into it).

cogitosum · 21/08/2012 16:25

I hate the 'sexy' costumes (nurse, school girl etc) but love fancy dress! My best was a party with a London underground theme. I wore a plastic penis thing on my head and got a fosters teeshirt from eBay - cockfosters!

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 21/08/2012 17:22

I detest adult fancy dress parties. YANBU in the slightest.

Itsjustafleshwound · 21/08/2012 17:28

I absolutely loathe fancy dress parties ...

Every one I have been to has always had some major embarrassment for somebody that could so be avoided if everyone just came as is ....

I don't mind having to dress formally but novelty costumes and themes brings out the killjoy in me ...

Itsjustafleshwound · 21/08/2012 17:29

There is always some hairy man wearing a bikini or mankini .... Aaarggghhhh!!!!

the list goes on^ Grin

waitingtobeamummy · 21/08/2012 18:03

Just came on to check you weren't moaning about my fancy dress themed party! I love them! Normally go silly but It's my 30th this year-sob! So going pretty/sexy!

WerthersUnOriginal · 21/08/2012 18:08

Oh god I hate them. I don't think I'd go to one anymore.

Why do I want to go out in something from dc's dressing up box?Confused Anyway the mention of fancy dress makes my blood pressure go up thanks to school and it's obsession with it. The last thing I want is to do it too!

AmberLeaf · 21/08/2012 18:22

Yeah I hate them because I've never been invited to a proper one
