Is HE being unreasonable? Well, yes, very obviously...

This article can't get pregnant from rape was brought to my attention today. Obviously 'unreasonable' doesn't even cover it. I genuinely cannot believe that, in this day and age, someone can seriously have these views. Or even think that there is anything other than 'legitimate' rape. Seriously...

The reproductive system shuts down ? Shock

So your egg that's floating its way down your tubes, minding its own business, suddenly bolts back into the ovaries and battens down the hatches?

He's a bigot, but at least he's a stupid one. They are easier to spot.

Northernexile · 20/08/2012 13:45

Good God. Yet again I am glad I don't live in the US of A.

TheBigJessie · 20/08/2012 13:47

There was actually a study a few years ago that found that rape victims were more likely to get pregnant...

I'll see if I can find it.

Dawndonna · 20/08/2012 13:49

It's scary when such a dullard seeks a position of power.

AGilchrist · 20/08/2012 13:49

There are no words for that kind of stupidity.
Well there are but dd is looking over my shoulder and I don't want her know those words, or that her mum uses them.

KenLeeeeeee · 20/08/2012 13:50

I'm too outraged to form a response to that.

TheBigJessie · 20/08/2012 13:52

So far, I've found this, which isn't the study I remember reading.

shows a 5% rate

Ephiny · 20/08/2012 13:52

WTF? Shock

I can see where this reasoning is going though. Presumably if you do get pregnant, that's evidence that it probably wasn't a 'legitimate' rape, and therefore don't 'deserve' an abortion? Hmm

FuckityFuckFuck · 20/08/2012 13:52

OH told me about that article last night, was gonna post it this morning.

Stupid stupid little man, but sadly there will be some people sitting reading it, nodding away and believing the bullshit

missymoomoomee · 20/08/2012 13:52

WT actual F, there are no words to describe what an absolute dicksplash this guy is. I'm guessing he thinks rapists whos victims get pregnant should all be let off then as the pregnancy is evidence they consented. And who are these 'doctors' who told him this, they need to be struck off too.

TheBigJessie · 20/08/2012 13:53

A 5% pregnancy rate per rape, though. Which isn't that low...

lisaro · 20/08/2012 13:53

Even carier - he'll still get votes.

lisaro · 20/08/2012 13:53

Scarier - sorry.

FoxtrotFoxtrotSierra · 20/08/2012 13:55

We were told this by the Life chap who visited us at school (around 1994). I am gobsmacked that it's still being peddled.

LadyBeagleEyes · 20/08/2012 13:56

The scary thing is this man could soon be in a position of power.

What a cunt.
I hate these politicians. There's another one who wants to ban abortion, even certain types of contraception, and termination for medical reasons - Yet he and his wife terminated a pregnancy. But its ok cause he calls it a medical miscarriage. Prick.

DublinMammy · 20/08/2012 14:00

I think missymoomoomee said it best when she referred to him as a dicksplash.

Trazzletoes · 20/08/2012 14:03

'mis-spoke'?? Gave some insight in to his mindset, more like...

OP posts:
Tanith · 20/08/2012 14:04

Very occasionally, I come across an opinion so crass, so ignorant, so insulting, so insensitive that my jaw just drops.

This is one of those occasions.

So he "mis-spoke", did he? Perhaps he should avoid "mis-speaking" in the future by keeping his ignorant trap shut Angry

amybelle1990 · 20/08/2012 14:06

This man has opened up a whole new world of stupid :S

itsatrap · 20/08/2012 15:38

I genuinely wonder if he really believes this shit, or if its he is attempt to appeal to a certain demographic?

I know there are plenty of twats in the world, but am struggling with the concept of anyone actually being that thick?

Ephiny · 20/08/2012 15:42

Apparently this is quite a common belief in certain circles (the US religious right) Confused

ScrambledSmegs · 20/08/2012 15:45

What I find most disturbing about this whole row is that he's currently ahead in the opinion polls here

BBC news has some more on the story. He has form - In 2011, he co-sponsored a controversial bill that would have limited the government help available to women seeking abortions in the case of rape to cases of "forcible rape".

Hmm
FermezLaBouche · 20/08/2012 15:45

Sigh. The undertones being of course that if you do get pregnant from a rape you must have actually wanted it and therefore it wasn't really rape. Brilliant.
So much about the US attitude to reproductive choices pisses me off.

I read a horrible article a while ago proposing that women in the US (can't remember what state) should be forced to have an instrument inserted into their vagina to determine whether the embryo's heartbeat can be detected. Bear in mind this is still in early stages of pregnancy. If one is picked up, sorry ma'am you're reproductive choices are down to zero. Also - I'm sure we have a term for when something is inserted into a vagina without her consent... Hmm
