I was considering booking a hol for Oct half term in Spain. Went into the travel agent today and she said it would be to cold to swim in Oct. Is this right? For those who have been in Oct what were the temps?

I went to Torremolinos in Oct 09, our last full day was halloween, the temp was a minimum of 27 every single day. Although they were having a drought at the time, apparently Oct is their rainy season.

Depends where in Spain! It's a big country...

Blacksquirrel · 18/08/2012 20:20

I think it's too unpredictable at that time of year.
Can you visit one of the Canary Islands? They should have good weather.

IwishIwasinLondon · 18/08/2012 20:21

We were in the Algarve (so not far)for a week for ds1's birthday at the end of october a few years ago and we spent most days on the beach and in and out of the sea.

Doilooklikeatourist · 18/08/2012 20:24

I went to Calahonda ( near torremolinos ) one October and it was awful ,
Rain , rain and more rain .
I remember being at the top of the tower in Seville Cathedral , with torrential rain whipping into my face ... Memories ..
I love Spain , but October can be dodgy !

TheCunnyFunt · 18/08/2012 20:24

Oh yes, me and my mum went to Tenerife in December one year, roasting hot!!

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 18/08/2012 20:25

Went last year (south)

Depends what your after, found t shirt & jeans in day cardigan in night.

Wouldn't really have been able to sunbathe but far from cold.

I liked it but go like this Angry in the heat !

The weather in the northern Med and Greece can get rainy/windy from end September thru mid-October after which it generally settles into a beautiful Indian summer through till late November.

We always enjoyed good weather on the more southern Spanish Costas and Mallorca during the February and October half terms. The sea isn't warm enough to swim in February (although some do) but it's more than warm enough in October.

NovackNGood · 18/08/2012 20:32

It is still mid 20's most days in October and the sea temp is still not much different to summer as the sea takes a long ong time to cool down and considering it 40 on the shade in the shock when you enter is a lot less and it's comfortable. Swimming pools will be cooler though as they lose the temp a bit if you get a few cloudy days and wind at the end of September etc.

slipperandpjsmum · 18/08/2012 20:33

The woman in the travel agents said the swimming pools would be shut but when I look in the brochure they say the are open. What are peoples experience of the pools?

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 18/08/2012 20:35

I didn't go in pools... They may just be shut some places as its out if season.

DiscoDaisy · 18/08/2012 20:38

We went to Majorca in October 2010 and it was sunbathing weather all week. It was towards the end of October and the temperature was above 25 all week and we only had one morning of rain.
The pool was no colder than when we go to Spain in June/July.
This year we're going to Spain in October again but down by Marbella so hopefully we'll have the same weather again!

NovackNGood · 18/08/2012 20:42

I swim in my pool until late september and will take a dip in the sea in October on the atlantic coast and the med is even warmer around then.

accidentalchickenkeeper · 18/08/2012 20:45

We went near Marbella last October (19th-26th). Lovely and sunny for 4 days and pissed it down for 3. The pool was freezing. That said, we still had a great time Smile

FutTheShuckUp · 18/08/2012 20:47

Went last year first week of October- it was baking! We were in the pool everyday just to cool off!!

TheCunnyFunt · 18/08/2012 20:59

When we went to Torremolinos the pools were open at our hotel, they were always busy but I thought they were bloody freezing! My nipples turned to stone when I got in Shock

bluebump · 18/08/2012 21:01

The pools are shut in our bit of Spain (Murcia region) in October when we've visited but we've been known to still be in summer clothes then.

geegee888 · 18/08/2012 21:06

I've swam in the sea at the end of February in both Marbella and Tenerife! Both warm and pleasant sunbathing weather, although not boiling. I think October in the south of Spain eg Marbella, Torremilnos, Malaga, would be very warm and pleasant, last year I was in Marbella in September too and it was far too hot.

I've been in Majorca in April and it wasn't quite so warm, but then I'm not a Majorca fan. The Canary Islands are pretty safe for hot weather all year round. Marbella is supposed to have quite a localised microclimate and can be warmer than other resorts nearby.

Lagartijadoesthecrazyshake · 18/08/2012 21:13

Where in Spain!!??? It's a big place! I've swum in the sea in the Oct half term in Andalucia (I live there) and it was lovely. Other years it's been shit.

LaBelleDameSansPatience · 18/08/2012 21:16

We go to the South of France at the end of October every year and swim in the sea ... the locals are Hmm and prophecy catching terrible colds!

CaliforniaLeaving · 18/08/2012 23:12

We used to go every October for 2 weeks when we were kids. Either very south or to Majorca, swam loads and came back all freckly every time. Usually it was about 30 so plenty warm enough. A couple of time we had sudden downpours, and even that was warm and only lasted a day or less.

VivaLeBeaver · 18/08/2012 23:29

I've been to Tenerife in Oct and it was way too cold to swim. Too cold to be on the beach, never mind swim. Was told it was unusually poor weatehr but if it can be that cold there in Oct I can imagine Spain to be more likely to be that cool.

Caz10 · 18/08/2012 23:29

We were the only people in our campsite pool in Italy in October, we got out when dd turned blue. FREEZING! A weird week actually, went from bikini top and shorts to jeans and fleece (daytime) in the space of the week.

Nannyto2 · 18/08/2012 23:32

Went to Spain (near Alicante on the costa blanca) and it was hot enough to swim in the sea but not the pools

Lueji · 18/08/2012 23:50

It depends where you go. For better weather go south, but try to find a place you can do things if the weather is poor.
