to wonder if Spain will be too cold in Oct?

I was considering booking a hol for Oct half term in Spain. Went into the travel agent today and she said it would be to cold to swim in Oct. Is this right? For those who have been in Oct what were the temps?

We go to Lanzarote in October most years, and the weather is always hot. The pools are never usually very cold either, and many places have heated pools too.

Went to Majorca in October a couple of years ago and the weather was lovely. The pool was very cold and even DD didn't bother with it after first attempt but the sea temp was great and Dh and DD spent a fair bit of time in the sea.

Depends where you are. We lived in Marbella for 8 years until last October and were swimming until the end of the October half term usually. Some complexes will have the pools closed if they're over a certain size, but most have one or two that will be open.

Temp in October can vary quite dramatically, I'd say an average is probably 26, but it can slip to 18/19 and be up to 30/31.

Oh no, now I'm worried! We're booked to stay in a villa near Javea (Costa Blanca) in October. It has a gorgeous pool. And now I don't know if we'll be able to use it!

slipperandpjsmum · 19/08/2012 10:39

I am worried to lowfat. This will be our first trip abroad with dcs and they love swimming!

What does the MN jury think? On balance should we chance it or are we better opting for somewhere else??

We were in Majorca for the middle two weeks in October last year. My DSs love swimming but not in the sea.

According to other guests the sea was much warmer than the hotel pool. In saying that, the dss still swam/played in it. It took me about 5mins to get in, gradually creeping down the stairs, getting used to the water as it was freezing. The very brave dived right in and got the shock over immediately.

It was warm enough to sit by the pool but not exactly sunbathing weather.

If you are worried that the dcs might get too cold, do as I did and take shortie wet-suits for them. This let my kids play in the pool without going blue but even then there were some days when they wanted to use the indoor pool (the size of a puddle) rather than play outdoors.

At this time of year you might be able to pick some wetsuits up quite cheaply.

The wetsuits also saved on worrying about covering them in suncream but I did make sure faces and forearms were protected.

HTH.

We went to Majorca one October and it was funny weather. Warm enough to sit by the pool, but not really warm enough to swim in it. One day we went to the beach and it was freezing.

If I were you I'd go for the Canary Islands. They are further south towards Africa so are warmer in the autumn/winter months than Mainland Spain.

Lowfat - if you have booked a villa with a pool, then you can swim. I imagine it will be a private pool, and therefore not limited to the same safety laws as the bigger ones can be.

Most urbs/developments have a selection of swimming pools (ours had three). The larger ones are the ones they tend to close as by Spanish law they have to have a life guard when they are over a certain size. The smaller ones don't and are used all year round by nutters.

As I said earlier, we pretty much swam until late October/possibly mid November and, very occasionally, into December too, but that was rare. May, September and October are my favourite months in Andalucia, not too hot, definitely not cold, days are still long and one can still have supper outside without needing anything warmer than a t-shirt.

lowfatiscrap12 · 19/08/2012 13:02

I know I'll be able to swim, not sure if I'll want to though!, think it's a bit of a weather lottery. Hoping we're lucky!

WHERE in Spain???? It's like asking will the US be cold in October!!!!!

theoriginalandbestrookie · 19/08/2012 15:01

It really depends we went to La Manga ( near Murcia) a few years ago in October and it wasn't hot enough to sun bathe, go to the beach or use the unheated outdoor pools. it was still warm enough to go cycling and sit outside for meals with a cardigan on but certainly wouldn't be betting on it again.

We are going to Tenerife for the 3rd year in a row for October half term and the weather is perfect for us mid to late 20s so hot but not roasting.

FoxyRoxy · 19/08/2012 15:40

It really does depend where. Op please answer the very simple question! I live in the Balearics and october is one of those months where it can be perfectly warm one day but thundery the next. You wouldn't catch me swimming in oct but I see plenty of tourists doing it!

slipperandpjsmum · 19/08/2012 16:11

Sorry Largar and Foxy been out for the day. We have not booked anything so there isn't an exact destination. The travel agent spoke in very generic terms and didn't mention particular areas being warmer.

We don't want it hot, having young dcs just warm enough to swim.

The hottest part of Spain will be Andalucia. A quick google gives average temps for October.
www.holiday-weather.com/andalucia/averages/october/

It can be lovely or it can piss it down. Depends.

FoxyRoxy · 19/08/2012 16:26

Yes Spain is a big country and certain areas will be hotter than others. The Canaries is probably your best bet, actually.

None of the hotels here close their pools until the hotels themselves close so you would still be able to go in, if you'd want to is another matter!

cloudpuff · 19/08/2012 17:47

for the last four years we have been going to southern spain and the balearics (sp) in october and spend most of our time in the sea. Temps has always been minimum 27. With not much rain.

LadyBeagleEyes · 19/08/2012 17:51

Another one that suggests the Canaries.
I've been 4 times now during the October Break and it's always been warm and sunny, the pool temperature is fine too.

NovackNGood · 19/08/2012 19:02

Andalucia is great and especially in the west where there are very very few British which is why I live most of my year there. Parts of the canaries can be full of the blue rinse brigade during winter.
