to go away on MY OWN?

mcmooncup · 13/08/2012 19:54

So, stbx is taking the dcs away for a week in 10 days.

I could stay here and go out and get merry with my friends.............but I do that all the time I am free and I think I want to go away........and on my own. I've never done it before. And my friends will think I have lost it. But my marriage was badly abusive, I've not been away for 2 years, and I kinda want to just be on my own. Is this so bad? Is it bonkers? Will I be bored after an hour? Can I do the dinner thing on my own?

I'm thinking Edinburgh. Never been. (I'm not Scottish despite name)

Yep you can do it. No it isn't weird.

Sounds great.

Take a book/phone/mag/iPad to dinner if you're nervous. You'll love it.

Sirzy · 13/08/2012 19:56

Sounds like it is exactly what you need! Go and have fun!

Alameda · 13/08/2012 19:56

why will your friends think you have lost it? going away on your own is nice

are you going for the festival?

startwig1982 · 13/08/2012 19:57

Sounds like a great idea! Enjoy being free and relax! Smile

YANBU

Going away on your own is awesome, and everybody should do it, often.

In answer to your questions: No, No, No, Yes.

Go. You will love it. And Edinburgh is a great choice. A nice hotel helps, if you can afford it. Take your kindle. Oh, I'm getting all jealous now!

Pagwatch · 13/08/2012 19:58

I do it once or twice a year.

I love it . Not doing a single thing to please others is just unbelievable. I go to a hotel and spa. I swim and read and walk and snooze. Heaven.

Eating alone can feel odd but honestly just work through the first ten minutes and you realise that no one cares. I tend to take a book/iPad and ask for a quiet table where I can people watch.

It's lovely. Do it.

Animation · 13/08/2012 19:59

Edinburgh is a good choice - my favourite feel good city.

You'll be fine there.

Go for it!

JumpingThroughHoops · 13/08/2012 19:59

Do it .... empower yourself to have a good time doing what you want, when you want and how you want.

WilsonFrickett · 13/08/2012 20:00

Do it. Although it will still be the Festival (good) so accommodation will still be expensive/at a premium. But in terms of 'should I go away' - yes, absolutely.

festival is most of august isn't it?

hopefully your friends won't worry, they must go on holiday too sometimes?

Kneedeepinshittynappies · 13/08/2012 20:04

Do it! Edinburgh is great just now with the festival, you'll no way be bored and lots of friendly people around. Let me know if you would like any advice on hotels, restaurants, etc. enjoy!

SoWhat · 13/08/2012 20:06

I am doing exactly this on Wednesday, off to Glasgow for a couple of nights. Can't wait!

giraffesCantTakePartInThe100ms · 13/08/2012 20:06

Sounds good. I am going away on my own at the end of September - I can't wait! Just for 2 nights but I so need it!

DaPrincessBride · 13/08/2012 20:08

Do it and I am rather jealous

shrodingerscat · 13/08/2012 20:10

Gosh, no, it sounds fantastic and I am jealous, it's my fantasy at the moment, blessed solitariness. I was about to ask if I could come with you, but that would defeat the object!

amillionyears · 13/08/2012 20:11

Go for it,while you have the chance.I used to do it regularly when my kids were small. It was great.I used to go away for 3 days,so not too long for everybody, but enough to recharge my own batteries.

Selks · 13/08/2012 20:12

Go for it! I go away on my own whenever I want. Sometimes it's been out of necessity but even when I've had a partner I've still taken off on my own now and then. It's bliss.

Have fun! Smile

SoleSource · 13/08/2012 20:15

You are bonkers

If you can afford to go and do not

Have a peaceful, fun, refreshing time to find you agsin.

Let us know what you got up to, I love Edinburgh.

lyndie · 13/08/2012 20:16

You will never been alone in Edinburgh in August! It's a great time to visit here. So do it!!

edwinbear · 13/08/2012 20:19

I am going away on my own in 3 weeks, to go diving in Egypt. I cannot wait. I shall dive, relax by the pool and sleep. Nobody shouting 'mummy, mummy' at me for a week, perfect.

MorrisZapp · 13/08/2012 20:20

Do it (hotel availability permitting).

I live in Edinburgh and I swan off to York twice a year :)

GranToAirMissiles · 13/08/2012 20:20

It's a few years ago now, but when I used to do this I found that wait people often assumed I was waiting for a partner, and decided not to serve me until 'partner' came along! Maybe something to be aware of ?

Pagwatch · 13/08/2012 20:33

I have ever had that GranToAir. I would be surprised tbh.
