to go away on MY OWN?

mcmooncup · 13/08/2012 19:54

So, stbx is taking the dcs away for a week in 10 days.

I could stay here and go out and get merry with my friends.............but I do that all the time I am free and I think I want to go away........and on my own. I've never done it before. And my friends will think I have lost it. But my marriage was badly abusive, I've not been away for 2 years, and I kinda want to just be on my own. Is this so bad? Is it bonkers? Will I be bored after an hour? Can I do the dinner thing on my own?

I'm thinking Edinburgh. Never been. (I'm not Scottish despite name)

I love going away on my own too, and Edinburgh was the last place I did it! Had a fab time, even better if you can go during the festival I guess.

I've never had any problem with being served - anyway you would be asking for a table for 1 presumably so they should know! I just take a book or magazine, some places the staff are quite chatty too if you're alone but look open to some conversation. Also went to a couple of pubs on my own, looking for good music - which was a little strange at first but fine once I got used to it!

Am working on planning my next solo trip soon (last one was ages ago), IF I can find a free weekend to get away...

PS there was a thread on here with recommendations for places to go in Edinburgh, I got some good tips from there - it was a while ago but should still be searchable.

Go! I'm so jealous!

MorrisZapp · 13/08/2012 20:54

I don't really bother with restaurants when I'm away. I have lunch on the hoof just as I would at home, then raid marks and sparks for a hotel picnic in the evening.

To be eaten post bath, spread out on the bed with mags, books and new purchases to play with.

mcmooncup · 13/08/2012 20:57

Thanks for the encouragement folks.....and since I. Am. Doing. It...... could anyone who knows Edinburgh advise if this hotel suits my needs? i.e. not outrageously expensive?

I can't afford don't need super luxury, just something central?

Sorry, I don't know the hotel, however I can highly recommend this deli It is well worth the walk (a little out of town) and has a cafe hidden out the back which does lovely breakfasts. I have spent many a happy hour alone with a newspaper there and never felt at all self conscious. If we're moving onto recommendations, can I also add that a walk up to Arthur's Seat is essential and the bus tour is surprisingly good? Have fun Smile

Hey Shirley Grin

The hotel is fine (or was a couple of years ago, friend used to work there). I wouldn't say the food is particularly amazing but there are millions of places to eat out in Edinburgh, in fact don't even book breakfast, just go room only wherever you stay.

YouBloodyWolf · 13/08/2012 21:13

Yanbu. I'm thinking of buggering off somewhere on my own for my 40th.

ImpatientOne · 13/08/2012 21:19

I went on holiday alone when I was single and it was so empowering just doing whatever you want when you want- no discussions about restaurants, worrying if someone else is enjoying it as much as you etc etc... Grin

Have a great time!

thixotropic · 13/08/2012 21:26

Oooh

Love eating out on my own. Tale a good book and soak it up.

OhTheConfusion · 13/08/2012 21:26

The Easy Hotel is good value and spotless. I used it a few weeks ago when meeting old uni friends for a gig and dinner. It was central and I felt safe on my own.

thixotropic · 13/08/2012 21:34

In fact, if you like detective / police procedural novels. Take a couple of the Rebus novels.

A long weekend in Edinburgh with just Rebus for company. I'm in book heaven just thinking about it!

mcmooncup · 13/08/2012 21:50

I'm in heaven too just thinking about it Thixo.

I am just waiting for dog sitting confirmation...........all the relevant windows are ready on my laptop for train and hotel (Easy hotel is booked up for rooms with windows Confused, it's the other cheap one for me) and I. Am. Totes. Off.

Thanks for all your encouragement that I won't be saddo single woman. I feel so totally stupidly excited Grin

My DS is going to his dad for two weeks on Thursday and I have decided to go away for a week. It's not weird, it's wonderful. Take the chance, enjoy it, relax, and have a fab time in Edinburgh Smile

BarredfromhavingStella · 13/08/2012 21:54

Go for it-I'm very jealous Envy

Selks · 13/08/2012 22:00

DP asked me what I would like to do for my 50th in a couple of years. I replied 'two weeks on my own in a beach front hotel in Sri Lanka on my own with a guide book for days out and a stack of fiction books for lazing by the pool'. He was a bit Hmm Sad. I was only half joking! Grin Grin

MrsKeithRichards · 13/08/2012 22:08

Hotel looks great and slap bang in the middle! If you get up Before the festival ends just wandering about is entertainemt in itself. If your into spooky history take a ghost tour.

McBee27 · 13/08/2012 22:17

Hi McMoon, I'm new to this site, but just thought I would leave a comment here, as have lived in Edinburgh for 8 years now, so might be of some help with recommendations if you do decide to visit!

I don't know that hotel very well, but from the map on the website it looks like it's in a good location - very central and near to the station, Princes Street (main shopping area), and you can walk to the Royal Mile and other places from there. You will also be near Carlton Hill, which is very easy to walk up and will give you beautiful views all over Edinburgh and across the Forth - it holds a special place in my heart, that place, as DH proposed up there!

If you're looking for something cool and different to do in the evenings during the festival, I would try this: www.eif.co.uk/speedoflight - a nice way to explore Arthur's Seat!

I'll stop blethering on in a bit, but as far as pub recommendations go, my fave is the Antiquary in Stockbridge - a proper pub in a really nice part of Edinburgh!

mcmooncup · 13/08/2012 22:40

Thanks guys Smile

Appreciated. It's certainly not blethering. It's valuable INFO.

I will check out your recommendations. It is bank holiday weekend I am going......so looks like there is LOADS going on festival wise. Haven't quite trawled through the hundreds of things that are going on yet, but plenty of time.

I can do what I want, can't I? Wink
