Alice diminutives

threeleftfeet · 13/08/2012 17:17

My mum would like me to use Alice as it's a family name. I'm not very keen on the actual name, but like the idea of using a family name (possibly as a middle name)

Just wondered if anyone can think of any good versions of Alice?

(Not scared of unusual names! btw)

I used it as DD's middle name

Musomathsci · 13/08/2012 17:18

Allie as nickname
Alicia?

In Russian the diminutive is Alia (or Alya).

JumpingThroughHoops · 13/08/2012 17:24

Alice is a pretty name

StealthPolarBear · 13/08/2012 17:24

My DD gets Ali or Alligator (when she's being a grump)

charlottery · 13/08/2012 17:27

I never intended to shorten my Alice's name, but we end up calling her Al most of the time anyway.
My other dd is called Adelaide which means the same ( I know it seems daft, just liked both names!)

lemonpie7 · 13/08/2012 17:44

How about Alison? shortened forms Allie, Lissie, Sunny

YellowDinosaur · 13/08/2012 17:50

The thing is if you call her anything from that list then you are not using the family name are you?

Call her Alice as a first name or middle name. Or something else if you don't like it - your Mum doesn't get to name your child.

I'm called Alice. Mum and Dad sometimes call me Ali and some friends have called me Al but pretty much everyone uses sliced and this is the case for the one other adult Alice I know and all the children called Alice I know. So really, if you don't like it I'd choose something else.

YellowDinosaur · 13/08/2012 17:50

Sliced = dyac for Alice

GnocchiNineDoors · 13/08/2012 17:51

Hmmm....Alice really is only Alice though.

Its my dds middle name. Its a pretty 'easy' MN as it goes with nearly everything.

What are your names?

Fireandashes · 13/08/2012 17:53

Your mum has had her opportunity to name a baby, so don't feel obliged to use a name you don't like.

threeleftfeet · 13/08/2012 18:29

Wow lots of suggestions here!

The only one I really like though is Alia, and Russian wouldn't really be the best choice (my Grandfather's country having been invaded by the Russians, whom he fled from, many times!)

I don't feel obliged to use an Alice diminutive, just thought it might be nice, if I can find one we like.

Anna / Hannah are also family names, off to start a thread on Anna diminutives now!

What fireandashes said. Slippery slope.

threeleftfeet · 13/08/2012 19:11

This is my second child. We honoured DP's of the family with DS's names.

I'd like to honour my side of the family with DC2's names, if one we like presents itself.

Thanks for the concern, but no need to worry about "slippery slopes"!

I do want a name which has meaning for us.

OP posts:
threeleftfeet · 13/08/2012 19:11

That should say "DP's side of the family"

MrsKeithRichards · 13/08/2012 19:12

Alice...?

Alice?

Who the fuck is Alice?

ChitchatAtHome · 13/08/2012 19:18

MrsKeithRichards - brilliant! Grin

dottyspotty2 · 13/08/2012 19:23

My youngest is Alice has had Ally since tiny suits her, only problem was she was born around the time chubby brown had that bloody song and I'd not heard it.

scrablet · 15/08/2012 07:02

Allie here too, or Ally-Bally, or Allie B. (Don't know why...) So following from that, becomes Bally. Names become so personalised, middle names less so unless person chooses to be called by middle name later. My children have trouble even remembering their middle names (are only young).

giraffesCantGoBackToSchool · 15/08/2012 07:05

I like Alise

x2boys · 15/08/2012 09:52

personally i think alice is a lovely name but if its a middle why the big deal both my boys have family middle names but we rarely use them other than official documents passports etc?

threeleftfeet · 15/08/2012 10:00

DS1 has a fairly unusual name (only 7 on the ONS list), and we've given him a common middle name which we like should he want something more "normal".

We'd like to do the same for DC2.

OP posts:
manitz · 15/08/2012 10:05

I was alipali, phal (don't ask) sal and al never sliced though.

dottyspotty2 · 15/08/2012 10:17
