1 builder (professional, accredited etc)

Today he has hung 2 doors.

That is all.

8 hours.

I really think this is taking the piss!

Am I being unreasonable?

Yanbu

I could hang 2 doors in less time than that!!!

Sparks1 · 26/07/2012 18:00

It depends what basis you have employed him on. Is it price work or day work?

weakestlink · 26/07/2012 18:01

Day work :(

OP posts:
Sirzy · 26/07/2012 18:01

Was it just a case of one door off another on or did the new door need adjusting to fit and things?

weakestlink · 26/07/2012 18:02

He even complained that they were heavy (they are oak).

Sparks1 · 26/07/2012 18:02

Day work

Then yes, he's taking the proverbial.

thebody · 26/07/2012 18:02

Never ever pay a daily rate, he's taken the piss op. very annoying.

poorbuthappy · 26/07/2012 18:03

That is absolutely appalling.
Out of interest how much are you paying a day? (nosey)

weakestlink · 26/07/2012 18:03

Sirzy I've no idea as I've been at work all day.... Would that explain it then?

OP posts:
HeathRobinson · 26/07/2012 18:04

I've had a carpenter take down a door, plane it, turn around the lock, hinges and handles and refit in an hour.

weakestlink · 26/07/2012 18:04

£200 :(

OP posts:
MattDamonIsMyLover · 26/07/2012 18:05

Hang on, did he have to bulldoze the door opening and make the frames? You might be YABU.

WorraLiberty · 26/07/2012 18:06

Most doors need adjusting to fit and it's actually quite a difficult thing to do without having someone else there to take the other side of the door.

Also, he may have had to adjust the door frame too.

I'd ask him. You're paying his wage after all.

treas · 26/07/2012 18:06

Have you ever tried hanging a door? Not easy at all. Hot weather could have caused doors to swell.

We paid our professional builder per door.

Mind you I would have expected more from him.

weakestlink · 26/07/2012 18:07

No bulldozers involved!

OP posts:
poorbuthappy · 26/07/2012 18:08

You need to find another builder.
Seriously boot him out. I don't care if he is the most accredited builder in the world, he is taking the piss out of you and you have to stop him now.
And I speak as the wife of a carpenter/joiner.

weakestlink · 26/07/2012 18:10

His last day is tomo. The doors were the last thing to do bar a bit of grouting of tiles.

OP posts:
Sparks1 · 26/07/2012 18:11

Most doors need adjusting to fit and it's actually quite a difficult thing to do without having someone else there to take the other side of the door.

Which is why most builders would have a labourer and have got the job done in a few hours. And even then £200 would be an unreasonable rate.

rogersmellyonthetelly · 26/07/2012 18:24

Sorry that's seriously Taking the piss. I had a joiner box in both sides of my stairs underneath to make a cupboard, he and his workmate did the full job, including panelling, hanging 2 oak doors which had to be cut down to fit, made door frames, put handles on, and painted the whole job lot except the doors..... In 2 days, and the labour cost me the same as yours. It does not take a full day to hang 2 doors, if it did, your builder is incompetent!

poorbuthappy · 26/07/2012 22:49

DH has just asked where you live.
I assume London, South East?

weakestlink · 26/07/2012 22:54

No we live in Cornwall. Rural Cornwall.

OP posts:
poorbuthappy · 26/07/2012 22:58

I am really surprised by that.

weakestlink · 26/07/2012 23:01

Why?

OP posts:
UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 26/07/2012 23:17

We live in Cornwall, paid 2 guys about £900 to hang 11 doors, which included some tricky bi-folds/sliding doors. It took them 6 days.

It can be tricky. It also takes a lot longer when there's just one person. Two are much more efficient.

bragmatic · 27/07/2012 08:11

Wow. We're they the entrance to Westminster Abbey?
