To think .... Actually you might have a point

I don't go much for conspiracy theories, but....

At work today, someone was saying that the Olympic security fiasco is a set up.

That intelligence are increasingly concerned about potential terrorist attacks, which is why they have drafted in military. G4S have received a kickback to go along with the story because the government really need the games to be a financial success, and don't want to put people off travelling to London. That the media are making a big deal of it so that potential terrorists are aware of the military presence.

Usually conspiracy theories are flawed - help me find the flaw in this one.

It's got me wondering.

Btw, my colleague works in security.

msrantsalot · 20/07/2012 16:43

hmmmm....maybe

Tee2072 · 20/07/2012 16:45

The flaw is that 3 people can only keep a secret if 2 of them are dead.

Same thing wrong with all conspiracy theories. Someone would talk.

Housewifefromheaven · 20/07/2012 16:45

No point worrying though is there?

WorraLiberty · 20/07/2012 16:45

What can the military do that normal security guards can't?

It's not like they're going to have a bazooka in their back pocket

JeezyPeeps · 20/07/2012 16:46

The closest to a flaw I have found so far is that I don't think terrorists would care who is doing the security, they aren't picky.

Olympia2012 · 20/07/2012 16:47

Are lots of 'government' going to be at the games? If they are assent, then I would wonder why

Olympia2012 · 20/07/2012 16:48

*absent

UnChartered · 20/07/2012 16:49

i think a better way of 'scaring' terrorists would be to release a fabricated story that details how a splinter cell of an already known group had been foiled
cue much back-patting and congratulation instead of blind panic and cynicism

squeakytoy · 20/07/2012 16:50

"What can the military do that normal security guards can't"

More training in security situations I suppose, and more likely to be able to react properly than someone who has been roped in for £8 an hour with very little experience or training.

The theory itself would not surprise me, but the incompetence of the security firm doesnt surprise me either.

Tee2072 · 20/07/2012 16:50

I actually think the terrorists are going to be laughing so hard at how badly this is going so far they won't have time to do anything else.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 20/07/2012 16:54

I dont think it matters one bit who is managing the security, the whole thing is one giant potential security disaster waiting to happen anyway!
And Im not a conspiracy theorist, before anyone asks!

TheSkiingGardener · 20/07/2012 17:00

What would any national event be without a good conspiracy theory to go with it...

VenusStarr · 20/07/2012 17:49

Hmm Im not sure it makes much sense. Surely anyone wanting to disrupt the games would think G4S have messed up, the Olympics are short staffed security-wise, so it will be easier to plan something?

I also cant see a company putting their reputation on the line for this kind of publicity.

RuleBritannia · 20/07/2012 17:53

OP, why have you made this public? Terrorists wil now know what is planned.

Why was it made public that G4S could not cope and the service personnel were being drafted in? The news media should not have been told.

Tee2072 · 20/07/2012 17:56

Yes, because terrorists are searching MN to see if we know the best way for them to destroy the Olympics...or even the web...

StrandedBear · 20/07/2012 17:56

Actually if I were a terrorist I'd be more likely to take out the stadium if it were full of military personnel.

TheTeardropExplodes · 20/07/2012 17:56

Well, I don't think of myself as a conspiracy theorist, but I had exactly the same thought. The government have some intelligence that terrorists are planning something so they are using the army to strengthen security. They needed an excuse to do it without lettting on that they have this intelligence.

Maybe I watched too much Spooks (blame Richard Armitage).

But, the main argument against this conspiracy theory is that G4S really do seem to have fucked up!

NovackNGood · 20/07/2012 17:59

More plausible is that your tin foil hat has slipped off.

hatesponge · 20/07/2012 18:00

I know someone who is involved with the Games and has been at the stadium etc recently, seems like it genuinely is a big fuck up by G4S as they are STILL trying to interview/recruit security staff even though its only a week to go...unless all the queues of people they have seen waiting for their G4S interviews are all part of the conspiracy? Hmm

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 20/07/2012 18:04

If I was a terrorist, WHICH IM NOT, Id be far more likely to target a packed tube station or two! Theres no way that the security in places like that will be abywhere near adequate. Look what happened last time, in 'normal' London. Imagine the same scenario during the olympics!

Tee2072 · 20/07/2012 18:27

::makes note at Saggy's obvious attempt to prove she (he?) is not a terrorist::

Hmm
ColumboIsMyHero · 20/07/2012 18:29

Well... a friend at work has a son who is a qualified security person. He registered for Olympic stuff with a company who are sub-contractors to G4S. His reports of the catastrophically bad organisation are too convincing for it to be a set up. I've worked in central government. There's no way they could be devious enough to carry it off.

ChairOfTheBored · 20/07/2012 18:32

As far as flaws in the theory go, to me the inability of those responsible to conceive ad execute something that subtle would be up there on the list...

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 20/07/2012 18:35

Tee, have you been checking out my <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=achmed+the+dead+terrorist&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&rls=com.microsoft:en-gb:IE-SearchBox&rlz=1I7ADFA_enGB463&biw=1366&bih=643&tbm=isch&tbnid=-wuqnbOmzUgueM:&imgrefurl=www.myspace.com/_achmed_the_deadterrorist&docid=IiOBUX8e5o474M&imgurl=i612.photobucket.com/albums/tt209/Achmed_00/m_4dab45c1c3b84afd87b724836c92c329.png&w=170&h=209&ei=epYJUKbUJMbO0QX01eXbCg&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=690&vpy=2&dur=6996&hovh=167&hovw=136&tx=91&ty=88&sig=108581770473769544024&page=1&tbnh=128&tbnw=104&start=0&ndsp=23&ved=1t:429,r:19,s:0,i:198" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">profile picture?

DH had a theory that the government was also controlling the jet stream so we got all the rain early and none during the games. I think him and your colleague would get along well Grin
