I don't go much for conspiracy theories, but....

At work today, someone was saying that the Olympic security fiasco is a set up.

That intelligence are increasingly concerned about potential terrorist attacks, which is why they have drafted in military. G4S have received a kickback to go along with the story because the government really need the games to be a financial success, and don't want to put people off travelling to London. That the media are making a big deal of it so that potential terrorists are aware of the military presence.

Usually conspiracy theories are flawed - help me find the flaw in this one.

It's got me wondering.

Btw, my colleague works in security.

Given Group 4's track record in cocking up, I very much doubt that they are capable of participating in a conspiracy. Plus, the blundering mishandling of the whole thing is just too much in tune with the PR disasters of LOGOC policing, Olympic lanes for IOC officials etc.

lisaro · 20/07/2012 18:48

'friend works in security'. That could be a bouncer, a cash van driver, anything. If they were in any way someone of any relevance they'd keep their suspicions (yes suspicions, because anybody high enough to have known wouldn't breathe a word if true) to themselves. Wink

LynetteScavo · 20/07/2012 18:52

I initially thought this, but the government wouldn't have publicly hauled Nick Buckles up for public questioning if it was a cover up.

I think G4S are genuinely crap.

peeriebear · 20/07/2012 18:54

It'd have to be a pretty damn good kickback for G4S to publicly destroy what's left of its reputation and ensure they 'never work in this town again' so to speak.

LynetteScavo · 20/07/2012 18:54

Now, haling Nick Buckles in for questioning when it's all a set up...and paying him off for life?....Nah! Central government just wouldn't have the balls.

And too many people would have to be in on it.

NovackNGood · 20/07/2012 19:00

You've got to laugh at the irony of the Olympic moaners who complain about the games costs and all and sundry and then complain about G4S and don't realise that they got G4S because their bid was the cheapest because the organisers had to keep the costs low to stop the whiners!

mynewpassion · 20/07/2012 19:00

More believable that Elvis was still alive than that conspiracy theory.

SharonGless · 20/07/2012 19:03

Nah G4s have been incompetent for years!

NovackNGood · 20/07/2012 19:19

Top G4S mistake was putting a criminals electronic tag on his false leg so he was able to leave his leg at home and still go out on his crutches to the pub after his curfew time. Couldn't make that up if you tried could you.

dappleton · 20/07/2012 19:27

Surely if there was a real security threat, in addition to the expected, a complete media blackout would be in place of all security arrangements?

Isityouorme · 20/07/2012 20:17

Of course there is a real security threat to London .... It is the Olympics and the eyes of the world are on us .... And we have lots of nutters and extremists living amongst us, plus anyone can get into the Uk ....

LentillyFart · 20/07/2012 20:20

I think you credit the powers that be with intelligence way way beyond their capabilities to cook up a plot like that!

carabos · 20/07/2012 20:25

annunziata I'd heard that too about the rain - that the non stop deluge is as a result of cloud seeding to get rid of rain ahead of the games. Apparently the Chinese did it before Beijing games as well Wink.

laracroft2001 · 20/07/2012 20:28

My husband works very closely amongst all of the fiasco. Sadly it is not a conspiracy. G4s really did fuck up

Isityouorme · 20/07/2012 20:32

G4S have fucked up... But so did Locog for awarding them the contract .... And so the did the government for allowing them to do so ... Basically they are all a bunch of fuckers.

Flyingwithoutwings · 20/07/2012 20:41

Genuine screw up by G4S, not a ploy of any sort by gov or MoD or security services. Honest Smile

As for terrorists: MoD already had RM on water, RAF and RN In the sky and ground to air missiles plopped anywhere that was deemed applicable. So the terrorist risk factor was already taken care of before G4S failing to meet their contractual obligations.

No conspiracy I'm afraid.

EclecticShock · 20/07/2012 20:46

It's always a possibility. Government PR are very good, although they give the appearance they are not.

EclecticShock · 20/07/2012 20:46

If the threat has heightened, it's a brilliant way to get trained professionals on the scene without scaring people.

JeezyPeeps · 20/07/2012 21:23

He is not a bouncer or similar - he works in security for at a high- security establishment (don't want to be too specific for obvious reasons!) - the type of place where taking your mobile phone on the premises is a sackable offence.

But actually yes, the flaw is so blatant it took me ages to see it - if the security is in as bad a way as is reported, it won't put anyone off!

JeezyPeeps · 20/07/2012 21:24

As for spilling the beans - what exactly have I said that could in any way jeapordise the security of the Olympics!

Tee2072 · 20/07/2012 21:39

Nothing. But your friend needs to adjust his tinfoil hat.

JeezyPeeps · 20/07/2012 21:43

Lol! I think I might make matching ones for him and annunziata's dh!

xDivAx · 20/07/2012 21:47

Tee do you watch pretty little liars?

Tee2072 · 20/07/2012 21:49

Never even heard of it xDivAx.

xDivAx · 21/07/2012 01:11

Ha Tee, sorry, just a line out of the theme tune saying "two can can keep a secret, if one of them is dead"
