To think calling you 4 yo DD an 'Attention Whore' is wrong

I am sure I did this face Shock to the Mum in the playground who said it to her DD.

We were talking about a party and her DD wanted her attention so she kept tugging at her Mum's skirt. The mum said in a laughing voice 'Are you being an attention whore again Millie? Then she giggled.

Even if she was laughing its a horrid thing to say imo.

AIBU.

Any possibility you misheard?! If not YANBU!!

Would never dream of uttering the word whore in front of my dd let alone at her!

FreudianSlipper · 18/07/2012 17:20

of course it is a horrible thing to say

not sure why you needed to start a thread to confirm this Hmm

Vagaceratops · 18/07/2012 17:21

Because I told my friend and she said she didnt see that it was that wrong as it wasnt meant in 'that way'

No chance I misheard, she said it very clearly.

"Attention Whore" is a little strong...

Personally I prefer "Drama queen", "A little victim of life" or "OOOOOH clutches handbag".

phantomnamechanger · 18/07/2012 17:23

gross, just gross, bleurgh!

NeverBeenTrulyLoved · 18/07/2012 17:24

Nasty.

HolofernesesHead · 18/07/2012 17:26

terrible thing to say. how sad for the dd in so many ways.

shrimponastick · 18/07/2012 17:28

Ugh. Not nice!

Worse than the shouty mum I heard at the weekend - toher two young children - No, you can't have any sweets - now get your arses over here! I was very Shock. In the naice co-op too!!

Northernlurker · 18/07/2012 17:28

No yanbu. Mother should be ashamed of herself and probably need to spend some time with a dictionary.

'Whore' is a derogatory term for a person who sells access to tehir body. It should never, ever be used about a child in any sense whatsoever. It shouldn't be used about adults come to that.

Sarcalogos · 18/07/2012 17:29

Shock grim

TheVermiciousKnid · 18/07/2012 17:33

YANBU, not nice. :( And her daughter, not knowing what 'whore' really means, might well repeat it.

cuteboots · 18/07/2012 17:33

what a horrid thing to say to a small child. Yanbu

firawla · 18/07/2012 17:33

yanbu that is horrible

Lucyellensmum99 · 18/07/2012 17:36

Vile!!! Possibly the worse thing i have ever heard said to a child and i am no prude :(

ShatnersBassoon · 18/07/2012 17:46

Sometimes these things slip out for no apparent reason, and you have to hope the people you're with doubt their own ears and not mention your mistake. I once called my newborn baby "little prick" in front of all the other mums and my HV at a baby group. I had meant to say something like poppet or pumpkin Confused.

50ShadesOfGreggs · 18/07/2012 17:49

Yuck.

YANBU

Flisspaps · 18/07/2012 17:51

Shatners I called DS a nobhead by accident - I meant to say noodle head but managed the sweary version. I'd never call a child an attention whore though Shock

IRCL · 18/07/2012 17:53

YANBU.

Vile thing to say.

WhereYouLeftIt · 18/07/2012 17:53

"I told my friend and she said she didnt see that it was that wrong as it wasnt meant in 'that way' "
Does it matter which 'way' it was meant? The term is insulting, regardless. At some point her DD will realise what those words mean and she will think that her mother has thought of her in these terms since she was four years old. Talk about storing up problems for the future ... Shock

Hopefully, her daughter will embarrass her soon by innocently repeating the phrase in front of someone her mother would not.

electricalbanana · 18/07/2012 17:55

on a par with "sexy baby" in my opinion.

UnChartered · 18/07/2012 18:01

you when people don't understand what people like me mean by the sexualisation of young children?

MammaTJ · 18/07/2012 18:05
