To be a bit shocked by this post on facebook

A woman I went to school with posted that her daughter had just had her first taste of champagne on her status. Her daugheter is 2.5!!! Quite a few people commented and it turned out that her mum had actually given it to her rather than her taking the glass accidentally or something like that. The other thing that was surprising was the amount of people 'liking' the status. In my mind a two and a half year old should not be given any alcohol, not even a 'taste' as it's dangerous. Stange thing to do and strange thing to post on facebook!

and this is all you have to be shocked about? Confused

StrandedBear · 16/07/2012 09:52

DD has licked a bit of the head off a beer to stop her going for the glasses, it worked.

Kayano · 16/07/2012 09:53

Did she not just let her taste it, like have a sip or stick her tongue in it?

Do you remember that thread where someone was outrages at a kid having diet coke to drink, turned out to be a tiny droplet offered on the end of her dads finger

bronze · 16/07/2012 09:55

I'm not shocked but it is illegal

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 16/07/2012 09:55
Biscuit Blah. Unconcerned.
OHforDUCKScake · 16/07/2012 09:57

Meh

KellyElly · 16/07/2012 09:57

I'm shocked, champagne is too expensive to waste on a rugrat.

I just wedge a teat into a can of Special Brew and that's my DS happy.

MrsRhettButler · 16/07/2012 09:58

Dd1 had her first taste of champagne on her first birthday, her dad had a bottle to celebrate the occasion and he gave her a tiny drop. I have photos. So what?

pictish · 16/07/2012 09:58

So what?

squeakytoy · 16/07/2012 09:59

Cant find anything to be outraged about.. she gave the child a sip, not a flute full...

At least it isnt a fruit shoot! Grin

MrsRhettButler · 16/07/2012 09:59

A sip from a glass is nothing.

I thought it was legal in your own home?

KellyElly · 16/07/2012 09:59

DreamingofSummer nice comment, love people like you on MN. No I don't think I said that thats all I have to be shocked about in life or its the most shocking thing I have ever seen. I was shocked as I have a DD nearly the same age and would never let her have any alcohol being that she's barely a baby.

Over fives

MrsRhettButler · 16/07/2012 10:00

Ahh ok

TheOneWithTheHair · 16/07/2012 10:01

I'm with the "so what" brigade too I'm afraid.

Birdsgottafly · 16/07/2012 10:01

I'm not shocked but it is illegal

Some people consider some laws to be optional. Just look at the responses to the threads where people leave babies in the house on their own.

Giving a 'taste' will not seriously harm a child and it isn't illegal.

KellyElly · 16/07/2012 10:01

Wow by all your comments I guess I must be uptight. Didn't realise it was such a common thing to let toddlers try alcohol. I'll get the vodka out for my DD tonight Grin

Oooh ddd favourite plaything is a beer mat. they get a good chomping. shes probably tried more drinks than me via this method.

Mind, I do get stabby when I see BIL giving neice a drink from a can of diet coke at 7mo and got mixed responses on here so I understand you are allowed to be shocked at this.

LentillyFart · 16/07/2012 10:01

Enjoy your moment of shock horror! Savour it. Who knows when the next one will be along!

Birdsgottafly · 16/07/2012 10:02

The first line was the OP's, i should have put in in "".

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 16/07/2012 10:02

But thats a drink for over 5s isnt it, not a taste?
Otherwise surely it would be illegal for me to BF DS2 after having a drink, rather than just being Not Recommended...?

pickledparsnip · 16/07/2012 10:02

Not big a big deal. My son is 2.8 and has had tried beer & wine. He stuck his finger in the glass & licked it off. Not exactly going to get him drunk.

MrsRhettButler · 16/07/2012 10:02

Oooh not vodka! I think most would judge that no? Grin
