To be a bit shocked by this post on facebook

A woman I went to school with posted that her daughter had just had her first taste of champagne on her status. Her daugheter is 2.5!!! Quite a few people commented and it turned out that her mum had actually given it to her rather than her taking the glass accidentally or something like that. The other thing that was surprising was the amount of people 'liking' the status. In my mind a two and a half year old should not be given any alcohol, not even a 'taste' as it's dangerous. Stange thing to do and strange thing to post on facebook!

Wow didn't realise it was illegal. But apprently it is illegal to give alcohol to anyone under the age of 5 (disclaimer from Wikipedia Blush).

Babylon1 · 16/07/2012 10:03

YABU yes.

I could understand you being a bit Hmm if she'd given her a bottle of champers with a teat in it fit her bedtime drink, but a sip, really? Confused

pickledparsnip · 16/07/2012 10:03

I'd be far more shocked at Coke. My son can have a taste of alcohol, but not that fizzy sugary shite.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 16/07/2012 10:04

Or can you only BF over 5s after a few drinks?

Birdsgottafly · 16/07/2012 10:04

It is illegal to pour a glass for your child, but the law allows for interpretation and a 'taste' wouldn't be acted on.

pictish · 16/07/2012 10:04

All of mine have had their first sips of wine as tots. Why? Because they have shown an interest in mummy and daddy's 'juice' and we let them taste it to put them right off. Which it did.

My son was very interested in a bottle of brandy on the work top the other day (he's 10) and asked if he could taste it. I said yes take a small sip, then pmsl as he clutched his throat and scrubbed at his tongue going 'ACK! ACK! ACK!'

OP - what harm do you think will come to a one year old after a sip of champagne? What's your beef?

MrsBucketxx · 16/07/2012 10:04

its not illegal under adult supervision, they can drink in a resturant or pub etc at 16 with parents and a meal. and can only purchase at 18.

i had a glass of rose at the weekend ds kept pestering me thinking it was juice so i gave him a taste from my finger he pulled lots of yukky faces and he didnt bother again.

no biggy really it was probably a drop like i gave my ds.

MrsRhettButler · 16/07/2012 10:05

Yh, me too pickled. Coke far worse imo

50shadesofstress · 16/07/2012 10:06

My DS had vodka and coke at 17 mnoths completely by accident, he wanted to try my mums coke so she let him have a tiny sip, he obviously liked it he grabbed the glass and took a bigger mouthful, we all laughed and someone piped up 'wouldn't that be funny if it had been vodka and coke' The look on my mums face when she remembered it actually WAS vodka and coke, she panicked and was all like 'shall we take him to the walk in centre'.

I would of course not give my young children alcohol but have let them put their finger in my wine or champagne to taste. They usually screw their noses up!

Not fussed here. Alcohol is not the devil. That is Chocolate Philadelphia

Birdsgottafly · 16/07/2012 10:08

"its not illegal under adult supervision"

It is under 5, so if you poured your child a drink, you would be charged, but a taste from a glass, is fine.

Birdsgottafly · 16/07/2012 10:10

I was so disappointed by Chocolate Philadelphia, it's the first time i have spat out anything chocolate flavoured.

BlablaSos · 16/07/2012 10:10

Not shocked. I probably wouldnt do it but I know my husband has. Didn't really bother me, it's only a taste. She has had worse things in her mouth that she's picked off the floor!

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 16/07/2012 10:11

Blabla, the alcohol could clean her mouth of all the germs from the random floor stuff Grin

ElephantsCanRemember · 16/07/2012 10:12

I like your thinking Beyond Grin

Chandon · 16/07/2012 10:14

My MIL gave my DC their first taste of champagne when they were christened, around 6 months old. She dipped her finger in the glass, then into baby's mouth. baby did not like it much, but neither was it damaged for life or on a slippery slope heading for alcoholism.

it is kind of sweet.

MrsBucketxx · 16/07/2012 10:17

didnt say it was right birds just not a criminal offense.

if i was filling my dc's tommy tippy up with booze(knowingly harming my children) that would be abuse and illegal yes.

a sip of champagne is much better than smoking with little ones which thousands do daily Hmm

50shadesofstress · 16/07/2012 10:17

MrsRhettButler We have never let her forget it!

DeWe · 16/07/2012 10:35

My db downed a glass at a wedding at about that age and proclaimed loudly "more fizzy" to dp horror.

He hasn't yet turned into an alcoholic Hmm

KellyElly · 16/07/2012 10:37

pictish because I can't see in a million years why such a small child would need to try alcohol or why parents would want to let them. What's the point? An older child yes but a child that small no. That's my opinion. My daughter has asked to try wine etc before but just becasue she shows and interest doesn't make me feel the need to let her try it. Same as with coke and other fizzy drinks. She's too young in my opinion.

Did you know gasp shock horror wasnt that many years ago babies had a lil bit of brandy in there bottles to go to sleep with and help with colic Grin alcohol used to be in cough mixture and other meds, not sure if it still is. In fact everybody produces small amounts of alcohol naturally.

Getting your child pissed is one thing, a taste of mummys wine to stop them wanting it again is another. Alot damn better then second hand smoke to!
