To have asked for my 38p back?

Just canvassing opinion really. (this is a boring aibu)

Today in one of the big supermarkets I noticed on my receipt that once again I'd not received the discount on a 2 for X promotion, the difference was 38p, now this has happened to me so many times in this store, I usually realise when I'm home. So I'd got to the door and thought 'no, I'm going to tell them' so I queued at the service desk and explained that id not received my discount. The person on the desk said 'oh yeah that offers finished, but the sticker is still on, do you want the 38p back then?' I said yes please and got my money back. All good.

But now I'm thinking I probably looked a bit tight, how much is too little to ask to get back If you've been over charged?

I would guess it was Tesco's. No it isn't tight at all. The supermarkets are making millions out of their 'mistakes'. Put it in a charity tin if you feel like it. I'd rather see them get even an extra penny.

If you are willing to wait then it's your money.

I am sure supermarkets try it on as I have noticed several times it being 3p out - but always in their favour.

And 3p is bugger all but times it by 20,000 shoppers buying the same thing then they are making a tidy profit by ripping us off making a error.

Is it easier to email them? Or phone them?

Once had some french beans that went off before their date but couldn't be bothered to take them in. There was a phone number on the back, I phoned them and they (without fuss) credited my loyalty card with the amount they cost plus another £3 for my troubles...

gosh it is so deathly dull but I would ask too - otherwise you might as well wear a sign in there saying "tell me any old lies you want supermarket and charge whatever you fancy - I don't care"

I loathe this sort of error and annoys me as like others say to me 'its the principle' as often I've only brought the item because I've been lured into thinking I'm making some sort of saving.. half the time a bloody con when receipt actually shows you you've only saved tuppence, but hey that's marketing for you I guess.

If it makes you feel better I did same in a local Tesco on Sunday for a very similar amount. Sod 'em.

YY it was the principle, thats why I waited, I wasn't in a rush.

I think the supermarkets rip us off enough.

I always tell them, if nothing else it draws their attention to an error that needs rectifying.

Some supermarkets give you double back if they have made a mistake. The best one ever was when they charged me £50 for a DVD boxset that was reduced to £15 - they gave me double the £35 overcharge back, paying for almost everything else in my trolley. But I've done it for 50p too!

I nearly always check my receipt when I leave the supermarket. At Tesco's last year, they didn't put on the discount I should have had on the wine. I got twice the difference back, which meant, because of the amount of wine I'd bought (end of year presents for teachers) I was able to buy a bottle of Pimm's for 20p. I would have queued up (time permitting) for the 38p too.

Hmmm I brought 4 hanging baskets from the 99p store but was charged for 5, didn't notice till I got home and looked through the recipt. I wanted to go back and complain, but for the sake it was 99p and maybe being accused of lying, I didn't.
Starting to think they must do it all the time and get away with it, for the sake of a small amount who's gonna drive back into town for it?

I agree that driving back into town for 99p may well not be a good use of anyone's time and it's hard to 'prove' that you only bought 4 baskets.

In regard to the other posts, about the big supermarket chains having lots of confusing 'offers' and inaccurate amounts on receipts, it's about the principle of the thing and, as people say, if Tesco over charges each of their customers a penny each time they go in, that's actually shit loads extra money for them.

Agree that it is the principle - if they advertise an offer then that is the price they should charge. I have done that for a similar amount at sainsburys - big sign saying chorizo special offer then I got charged full price - am sure the guy thought I was a nutter but hey.

I aslo similar with online shopping - with tesco you can email them although they INSIST on phoning you (and more annoyingly phoning you, not getting to speak to you and sending you an email to say they tried to phone....) to let you know that they have refudned your 97p. I am sure they just do it to shame you as must cost them even more.

They aslo send you an email saying how disappointing this must have been for you. which is amusing as life is full of disappointments but being charged an extra 50P for my semi skimmed is not one that I dwell on

YANBU! Too right. I hate this - really bugs me. Our local Co-op is another store that very often doesn't add in/take off the discounts. I check every receipt now as I have been stung so many times.

Was it Tesco? They almost always fuck up on promotions and discounts. On the rare occasions I do actually shop there, I stand and check the receipt with a fine tooth comb to make sure they haven't diddled me out of a single penny. All those 38ps add up! and they do make a habit of it, as I'm sure other shops do too. It's not worth their while to care, because they figure people either won't bother, or will be too embarassed to go and ask for a few pence.

YANBU you go for it, but beware, I have done this. Stood there, positive that they have ripped me off, only to find that I got it wrong. Tescos are really great at putting an offer and placing it over other products that is slightly different.

You would be up in court if you owed them 38p. Remember that gal!

I can guarantee every time I go into (awful) morrisons it happens. I do suspect it's done on purpose.

I went back to asda last sunday because on my previous receipt they charged me £1.85 for bag of wedges which were advertised at £1.I had two bags so went and got my money back !! they have more money than me !
