To have asked for my 38p back?

Just canvassing opinion really. (this is a boring aibu)

Today in one of the big supermarkets I noticed on my receipt that once again I'd not received the discount on a 2 for X promotion, the difference was 38p, now this has happened to me so many times in this store, I usually realise when I'm home. So I'd got to the door and thought 'no, I'm going to tell them' so I queued at the service desk and explained that id not received my discount. The person on the desk said 'oh yeah that offers finished, but the sticker is still on, do you want the 38p back then?' I said yes please and got my money back. All good.

But now I'm thinking I probably looked a bit tight, how much is too little to ask to get back If you've been over charged?

I would get my money back.
It's happened to me s many times.
Tesco are the worst.

Itsgottabebags · 12/07/2012 16:24

YNBU I bought something friend chicken take out and the SA didn't bother with the change. Now I know it's a penny but by rights that penny is mine and could be the difference between getting a bus or not.

GreenEggsAndNichts · 12/07/2012 17:29

I would get it back from them, absolutely. I do it any time I notice that sort of thing. I'm not embarrassed when I do it- they're the ones who did something wrong. I'm just asking for the price they advertised.

Sonatensatz · 12/07/2012 17:35

Actually the shops are under no obligation to sell you products at the price on the shelf or indeed at all. If it goes through the till at a higher price thats the price they are offering to sell it at now and by handing over your money you agree to pay that price for it. So technically UABU but shops generally will sell it to you at the lower price ar offer you the difference back as a 'good will' gesture.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 12/07/2012 19:47

I bought a bag full of stuff at Gap on Sunday.

They didnt take the 25% off at the till. The bloke serving didnt notice despite huge orange signs all round the shop.

I had already waited 20 mins to be served and the manager looked mightly pee'd off when she had to refund all the stuff and rescan it.

I got the impression it wasnt the first time it had happened.

I am rubbish at maths, utterly rubbish. Good job it was 25% or I may not have noticed either Blush

CuriousMama · 13/07/2012 16:11

Sonatensatz that can't be right surely? So I go to buy a bag of plums at £1 they can charge me £3 as long as I don't notice? Hmm

CuriousMama · 13/07/2012 16:14

Tesco tried to rob us once (or once that we noticed) The meal deal came out as full price. When querying it the cashier was very flippant as if we were making too much fuss. It was around £7 difference ffs!! She huffed and puffed because she had to get help. We rarely use Tesco tbh. But Morrisons are crap too, I think they're all the same.

FunnysInLaJardin · 13/07/2012 16:17

YANBU. I noticed this had happened to me the other day and was almost tempted to go back on principle.

Bit like the cashback thing. One shop round here always 'forgot' to give it to you and so you'd have to ask for it. I reckon the staff pocketed it as once I had to go back for it and oddly the tills balanced........

wonkylegs · 13/07/2012 16:18

YANBU I have started doing this more and more as I realised that it did wind me up when it happens on a regular basis. I shop with Tesco online (through trial and error it's the best online round here) and 3 times I haven't received my petrol voucher. They send them in the post if you complain.
I've also complained when stuff is missing (even if it's only a few pence) because it's the principle - if I don't give them the full amount they wouldn't give me my shopping or would charge me with theft, so why should they get away with a mistake!

RichTeas · 13/07/2012 16:18

It's good to do this kind of thing as it alerts the supermarkets to their errors. If everyone made a point of claiming back over charges, the supermarket would need to assign another person to customer service, and they wouldn't like that (extra cost) so they would lean on their floor staff to ensure mistakes don't happen. You were not being tight, you were raising quality standards!

CuriousMama · 13/07/2012 16:21

In Morrison's you can never find anyone to complain to/ ask. Not the same problem but I want to grumble anyway Grin

EnglishGirlApproximately · 13/07/2012 18:22

curious - if an item is priced incorrectly a shop can take it off sale for 24 hours then return it to sale at the correct price, they don't have to sell it to you. In reality they always will with an offer as its a genuine mistake and they won't argue over a few quid. That law is there to protect the retailer as much as anything.

Many years ago working in a shop that sold toys we had a customer demanding a £200 electric car for £8.99 because it had an £8.99 sticker on it. It was very obvious that this sticker had been stuck on by someone other than the shop - it wasn't on properly, slightly ripped, in a different place to normal etc. Chances are it was a kid playing with the toys and the sticker had ended up there by accident. This customer spent 3 hours in the shop arguing about wanting the item for £8.99 - they didn't get it!

I have seen so many people change price tickets to try to get something cheap it's unbelievable - so there are laws there to make sure this doesn't happen. In the case of an offer, 3for2 etc., they have to honour it unless the ticket says the offer expires on a certain date,

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 13/07/2012 18:33

I know it has been pointed out, but want to remind everyone:

If Tesco overcharge you, their policy is double the difference back. They won't point it out to you if you don't notice! But it will be there on the sign behind the customer service desk.

If Asda overcharge you, even by 2p, you should get a £2 gift card. Again, they will not tell you this! But point it out to them, if they refuse it is worth an email to customer service- it's their refund policy, they should honour it.

wildkat · 13/07/2012 18:34

I constantly embarrass my DS by challenging the little overcharges at supermarkets -but OP, the best way to do it I reckon is do a mental tot up as you queue and follow the prices going on the till. Much easier and less of a faff to challenge the mistake at point of sale, they are quicker at sorting it out when there is a queue building up behind you, and does wonders for your mental arithmetic

MammaTJ · 13/07/2012 18:58

They can afford the 38p a lot more than I can. I would have waited and got it back too.

jubilucket · 13/07/2012 19:10

Just to say, do I win? Cos I asked for 2p back a few weeks ago! Like I said upthread, I check my receipt before leaving the shop.

RuleBritannia · 13/07/2012 21:16

Sonatensatz

It's the law (Sale of Goods Act) that if you are charged more than it says on the shelf, the store is in the wrong. They are supposed to charge the price on the shelf.

Deadsouls · 13/07/2012 21:17

Erm...why do you care what they think?

Fairyliz · 13/07/2012 21:31

Englishgirl I can understand what you are saying but why are
Tesco always overcharging me, but have never ever undercharged me?

TroLoLoLo · 13/07/2012 21:45

It's your moral duty to get your money back. You are obliged to do it for the good of your fellow citizens. If you don't believe me you should check out Martin lewis'es Moneysavingexpect

CadleCrap · 14/07/2012 00:45

yy to Tesco confusing signs. I tried to buy 3 bottle of wine for £10 (classy). Theyt charged me £17 as one wasn't in the offer, it was in a slightly diffrent offer. It took me 3 attempts to get 3 bottles for £10. As I was only buying the wine I noticed, but if I had been doing a weekly shop I probably wouldn't have.

Some of the offers are a bit Hmm. I saw one for 100ml of toothpaste for 99p. Buy 2 for £2. Erm.....

kittyandthefontanelles · 14/07/2012 00:51

They wouldn't let you off if you were 38p short so why should you let them off?
