"To be, or not to be: that is the question: / Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer / The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, / Or to take arms against a sea of troubles / And by opposing end them?"

LiberteEgaliteFRIGGernite · 12/07/2012 15:23

Frontpaw · 12/07/2012 15:28

I just text back saying 'sorry, but I only speak English'

IceCubes · 12/07/2012 15:43

Text speak should be a punishable offence ! I find it mildly annoying when teenagers do it, but when an adult say 'ill b l8' I want to delete them from my life!!

LentillyFart · 12/07/2012 15:46

Where did it even come from? Someone told me that way back in the mists of time, when mobiles first came out, that you had to pay per character in a text message - is that so? I can't remember that at all.
Textspeak does my head in. It actually makes me want to hurt people. I suppose what I'd really like to do is sit them down and ask them why - why do they do it? Why do they think it's ok? And how many times am I going to have to hit them until they promise never to do it again?

trixie123 · 12/07/2012 15:53

Christ yes, my CM does it and also my 60 year old MIL. C U L8R kind of thing. I hate it. I almost defriended someone on Facebook over it as well (LOL at the end of a post).

IslaValargeone · 12/07/2012 15:53

"it actually makes me want to hurt people" :o

whyme2 · 12/07/2012 15:57

The word I hate the most is avo instead of afternoon. It makes me instantly tense up and I have to restrain myself from shouting "IT IS THIS AFTERNOON YOU TWUNT".

WorraLiberty · 12/07/2012 15:58

Lentilly I don't know about paying per character but I know there was no predictive text.

Ne way dats wot i thnk m8

usualsuspect · 12/07/2012 15:58

When mobiles were first invented back in the olden days, you were only allowed a limited number of characters.Thats how text speak evolved.

No such thing as free texts back in the day either. It's just another form of shorthand it doesn't actually bother me in texts.

curiositykilledthekat · 12/07/2012 15:59

I have a friend that puts 'ven' instead of 'then', and 'dat' instead of 'that'. Seriously? Put in one extra letter and it would be the original word anyway. Hardly abbreviating is it. I love her dearly but when I recieve texts I want to shoot her!!!

usualsuspect · 12/07/2012 16:01

This site is full of DS, HTH, IYSWIM,YANBU etc.

WorraLiberty · 12/07/2012 16:04

usual that's exactly what I always say Grin

It is hypocritical of us to hate text speak when most of us can't be bothered to type a simple word like 'son'. I mean it's letter more than DS!

WorraLiberty · 12/07/2012 16:05

one letter more

StrandedBear · 12/07/2012 16:05

But usual they are acronyms not txt spk.

I hate it, always have. Makes me feel stabby.

WorraLiberty · 12/07/2012 16:12

But what's the difference?

The acronyms are just as difficult to read to the untrained eye and are only there because we're too lazy to type the whole words...just like text speak.

usualsuspect · 12/07/2012 16:13

Nah , I don't mind it,as long as I can understand the text then meh to how it's written.

LiberteEgaliteFRIGGernite · 12/07/2012 16:45

Text speak makes me irrationally Stabby.

Weirdly,acronyms are fine ...

I have no rational explanations I'm afraidConfused

thegreylady · 12/07/2012 16:49

I dont mind it in a text but nowhere else.I think acronyms have their place especially on mn where they are a sort of membership symbol.
If we start saying it doesnt matter how things are written then the whole of literature is irrelevant, the emphasis we place on children's reading and writing becomes meanigless and we may as well revert to grunts and hand signals for communication.

CaliforniaLeaving · 12/07/2012 16:53

Text speak on facebook makes me all stabby. Sad

Pandemoniaa · 12/07/2012 17:16

and. It's already a very short word. Or as the txtrs wud av it, a lil 1.

So write the fucker out in full please. It seriously does my head in reading a post where every "and" has turned into an "n". I could better cope with an ampersand, tbh.

There's really little excuse for text speak nowadays. With predictive text it is as quick to write an understandable message in full as it is to hunt and peck for pointless abbreviations.

There's no excuse for text speak on an internet forum. Which is a quite different form of communication. Communication being the key word here...
