AIBU to request a pregnancy test before my x-ray?

I am having an x-ray on my knee tomorrow, i am also almost a week late but did 2 tests on saturday which were negative. I am just not sure if I should cancel the x-ray or if you can request a test before. Any ideas much appreciated

Ring and talk to them and ask what they advise.

LadyStark · 09/07/2012 22:05

I'd probably just have the x-ray or buy my own test, def wouldn't ask for one in the hospital!

Shutupanddrive · 09/07/2012 22:06

Mention that you may think you are pregnant and they will give you a special jacket or some sort of pad with lead in it to hold over 'there'. I broke my ankle when pregnant and had to have X-rays, they were still able to do them (no choice though really!)

Needstotidyup · 09/07/2012 22:08

Yabu its not an emergency X-ray u know when it's happening so u should do your own test before the X-ray the hospital won't have a super test that will tell u extra early.
Stop trying to get a freebie test at the expense of the NHS.

AmINearlyThereYet · 09/07/2012 22:08

Please don't have the X-ray without telling them. I second ringing and asking for advice. If it isn't urgent, they might suggest delaying it for a few weeks.

Sirzy · 09/07/2012 22:08

Can you not do another test in the morning before you go?

RancerDoo · 09/07/2012 22:08

I doubt they have pg tests in the X-ray department.
If you wanted a test, you'd probably have to wait an age for it.
Get a first response. If you still think there's a chance you are pg, ask for a lead apron and put it over your tummy.

pumpkinsweetie · 09/07/2012 22:09

Take the test before you go

BadDayAyTheOrifice · 09/07/2012 22:10

I think they'll ask you before they do it. I remember them asking me when I was a 14 year old virgin and it made me Blush

slowestwildebeast · 09/07/2012 22:12

"Stop trying to get a freebie test at the expense of the NHS."

Weirdest response I have ever heard! Ask when you get there, the tests they have in hospital are able to be used pretty early, just tell them you wish to double check, they have posters all over advising you to do this. YANBU don't listen to people saying you are, you did a test Saturday and it came back negative.

You can buy hospital tests on ebay for about £1 for 20, they are not expensive, far less than a possible pregnancy complication.

BartletForAmerica · 09/07/2012 22:12

Tell them. They'll still be able to do the X-ray but will protect the uterus. To reassure you though, the amount of radiation that your uterus will be exposed to, even without protection, for a knee XR will be completely safe, but they obviously like to minimise risk.

BartletForAmerica · 09/07/2012 22:14

"the tests they have in hospital are able to be used pretty early,"

The tests in hospital are no more accurate that the ones you can buy in the shops, which are incredibly accurate anyway.

Yeahthatsnotgonnahappen · 09/07/2012 22:15

tell them. they'll either test and xr you or delay. it's not like you've decided not to test yourself in order to get a freebie pg test!

RancerDoo · 09/07/2012 22:16

Listen to Bartlet. She speaks sense.

moomintash · 09/07/2012 22:16

Pound shop tests are just as accurate as the expensive ones from boots

IawnCont · 09/07/2012 22:17

Even if you do a test first and get a neg, you should still tell them you're late and may be pg. Tests don't always pick it up and it's better to be safe than sorry.

slowestwildebeast · 09/07/2012 22:17

Yes but testing on saturday and testing on tuesday could make a difference, and why spend £8 on another pregnancy test when they have hundreds at the hospital, they really are not going to bankrupt the NHS!

monkeyfeet · 09/07/2012 22:18

thanks for all the kind responses, i think i may do my own test and also ask for the apron for my tummy.

incidentally Needstotidyup please read correctly, x-ray in morning as I was unable to wait tonight, sprained knee cannot walk so yes would class as emergency, and freebie on NHS please, I have done two tests my period is a week late, I am worried, it was advice i wanted thanks not insults try reading post next time, oh why am i even bothering getting into this

When I had an x-ray a few years ago at my local hospital, as an out-patient, I had to fill in a questionnaire and if there is any doubt they will insist on giving you an x-ray

julieann42 · 09/07/2012 22:20

Speaking as someone who works in a hospital I can assure you the hospital pregnancy tests are nothing special, they are the same as you would buy...the X-ray dept should ask you about wether you think there is any chance you could be pregnant....all over our hospital the signs say, if there is any chance you could be pregnant please inform the radiographer! if you don't your the one putting your possible unborn child at risk.

PeazlyPops · 09/07/2012 22:22

I think you should POAS before you go, and mention the possibility to them.

Shullbit · 09/07/2012 22:23

Whenever I have had to have an x-ray, I have always been asked if I am pregnant, or whether there is a possibility that I am pregnant. When I have been pregnant, or there was a chance, I was provided with a vest thing to wear over my abdomen to protect the womb.

Just mention it. No need for them to delay or test beforehand so long as they have a lead vest or what not. It isn't like wearing one will affect the x-ray as it is of your knee.

slowestwildebeast · 09/07/2012 22:24

I didn't say they were special tests, I said they're able to be used pretty early, some can't be used until after you are due your period.

Anyway, hope the OP gets it sorted whatever they decide.

Bigwheel · 09/07/2012 22:27

They always ask in our hospitial anyway before doing an x ray. If there's any possibility they will give you a test, just a cheap one mind, not clear blue or anything.

monkeyfeet · 09/07/2012 22:28

Thanks slowestwildebeast really good advice will be following this
