I am having an x-ray on my knee tomorrow, i am also almost a week late but did 2 tests on saturday which were negative. I am just not sure if I should cancel the x-ray or if you can request a test before. Any ideas much appreciated

I've unfortunately had to have a lot of xrays recently. Without fail, I've had to sign something to say I wasn't pregnant. If I'd thought I was, they said they'd have given me the lead pinny thing to wear. I'd just say to them - better safe than sorry. Good luck with the knee.

thanks Jenstar21

They will ask. They will shield the uterus. It's safe anyway - very low dose of radiation.
Hope your knee is better soon.
and maybe congratulations..

BartletForAmerica · 09/07/2012 22:41

"if you don't your the one putting your possible unborn child at risk."

If she doesn't, there is NO risk. The radiation dose is SAFE.

But, we do like to keep everyone's overall radiation dose to a minimum so the radiographers will just treat you as if you are pregnant.

Socknickingpixie · 09/07/2012 22:43

my doc gave me a blood test to check for pregnancy befor i had some treatment, but with xrays they just give you a lead cover thingy

FuckityFuckFuck · 09/07/2012 22:46

I would think they will ask you before the x-ray anyway.

When I was back and forth, and then taken in over the course of 8 days, I think I did about 5 tests!

Felt like everytime I turned around they were asking me for more pee

Johnnydeppsnewmrs · 09/07/2012 22:48

For a knee they will give you a lead gown, so risk of radiation very small. But tell them, and follow what they advise.
FWIW - I had abdominal x-rays - 4 of them- whilst pregnant, as a nurse didn't handover or write down that the pregnancy test was possitive!
During the night a Dr did my bloods and said my pregnancy hormones were skyhigh. Ordered an ultrasound, and there was a 4 week sack on the scan. The pregnancy test was repeated as I was very shocked, having believed first test was negative. It was a clear positive. Cue lots of worrying for months that something would be wrong, but DS is a very lively little 2.7 year old.
The amount of radiation is tiny, even when you have no lead jacket on. With lead jacket it drops further.
I was told you need about 2000 x-rays before significant damage is done.

thanks everyone feeling much better informed about it all

Had lots of x. Rays and always standard to get a test . Sometimes they have them handy but if not you get a prescription and go and queue at the hospitals dispensing chemists, which can take ages. My radiologist suggested I nip to boots and buy a test but I was skint so did the queue thing.

Good luck , on all counts

I have just had to have a mirena coil removed in a hospital setting as there was a problem. I thought the free preggers test was a joke and thought it was very funny actually as i said that i was expecting free soap and moisturiser in my room (private hospital paid for by NHS - dont get me started! but thats a whole other thread). Nurse said they give them to all patients, regardless of procedures, well all the female patients that is. I think you could just err on the side of caution, tell them you could be pregnant and they will take appropriate precautions.

holidaysarenice · 10/07/2012 01:38

I work in a hosp and have had many xrays. The form asks the date of last period and risk of pregnancy.

They will always offer a test if its a possibility and make u do one if its a ct, unless urgent or life threatening.

Its ur choice if u want to put it off if u want to wait until ur are or aren't pregnaant.

sashh · 10/07/2012 06:13

They will ask you. They will probably put a lead apron on you, they are heavy - don't be suprised.

CwtchesAndCuddles · 10/07/2012 08:46

They should ask you but if they don't make sure you mention it. I had to have an x ray on my knee after a fall a few weeks ago - it was only afterwards I realised that it was the first time I have ever had an x ray and not been asked if i could be pregnant! So they do forget to ask sometimes!!!

Tee2072 · 10/07/2012 08:49

They will ask, more than once. Tell them 'maybe'.

Mrsjay · 10/07/2012 08:52

Just tell them you might be they will still do the xray though just will get a lead pad or apron to wear,
