Are 4D scans ugly?

Blurgirl · 26/06/2012 11:30

Every time I see a friend's 4D scan of their baby I just feel slightly repulsed by it. They look like little bumpy bronze statues and because its a 'still' they don't even look alive. I don't why people don't just wait til the baby's born to see it.

I think they are all distored because of the fluid - like taking a photo under water. The thing that really freaked me out about the last ones I saw was that because of the way they are taken the baby looked like his arms and legs were detached!

Very odd. YANBU.

PandaWatch · 26/06/2012 11:32

*distorted

DublinMammy · 26/06/2012 11:33

Totally agree, I thought I was going to give birth to a bat-like creature rather than a baby after seeing DS's scan.... (by the way is it 3D or 4D?)

Blurgirl · 26/06/2012 11:37

Oh yes, 4D is 3D video isn't it?

AIBU to not 'like' or +ively comment on my friend's FB pic then? Really feel like being honest!

They creep me out.

PandaWatch · 26/06/2012 11:40

My DH refused to even look at his sister's ones because he thinks it's really weird and unneccessary and told her so! Siblings can probably get away with that more than friends though :)

And they've put them on FB?! Blimey. I'd just ignore.

WorraLiberty · 26/06/2012 11:41

I find them fascinating but they totally creep me out too.

MadreInglese · 26/06/2012 11:44

They weird me out

I don't think we should see that much IYKWIM

What happened to good old ultrasound blurry pics?

(obv 4D could be helpful for detecting defects but otherwise unneccessary IMO)

MadreInglese · 26/06/2012 11:44

and why are they called 4D? I thought 3D was as many Ds as you could get..?

Pandemoniaa · 26/06/2012 11:45

They freak me out. For some reason they always seem so lifeless.

TeWiDoesTheHulaInHawaii · 26/06/2012 11:47

They are creepy as hell.

It's a (sort of) 3D image, the 4th dimension is time, so you could describe a 3D video as 4D.

elliejjtiny · 26/06/2012 11:49

I'm on the fence, but I wouldn't have one because I think it's too detailed. I was tempted to get a normal 2d scan done privately with lots of pics and a dvd but DH nearly had a heart attack about the cost so we didn't.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 26/06/2012 11:50

Well I agree they do look a bit creepy...but I should imagine for the parents they are a little bit miraculous and amazing!!

I can't get over how much they look like baby has been sculpted from earwax.

MadreInglese · 26/06/2012 11:52

they're so squished up in the womb though, the 4D pics look like they're wearing bank robber stockings over their heads

(thanks for 4D explanation - always wondered that)

amazing to see I guess if you like that kind of thing, but not for me

BellaOfTheBalls · 26/06/2012 11:53

I don't like them either. I think it takes all the surprise out as well. If you find out the sex of your baby, then find out they have their daddy's chin or their mummy's hairline there's no "magic" left when they are actually born.

Willing to be flamed for that!

Blurgirl · 26/06/2012 11:54

Haha, Cosmic Burp earwax, love it!

PeazlyPops · 26/06/2012 11:55

I always found them creepy, but DH talked me into getting one for our pfb, and obviously it was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen Grin

Blurgirl · 26/06/2012 11:58

This particular one does look a lot like its dad and is sticking its tongue out - ugh! Babies look far more beautiful when they're born. I loved it that I had no idea what my daughter would look like. I certainly didn't want to see her dad's face in 4D! (we are still together btw just)

MollyDixtures · 26/06/2012 12:02

I saw pics of one the other day and fear I came across as completely disingenuous. In my head, all I was thinking was 'E.T phone home', but out of my mouth came 'wow, how beautiful!'. And I agree with you bella, think it completely ruins the surprise.

Whirliwig72 · 26/06/2012 12:07

I don't personally like them I think they look odd, give me the enigma of a shadowy b&w one any day.

JayelleBee · 26/06/2012 12:10

I had 4D scans with both of mine but didn't find out the sex. They don't really tell you anything, maybe a bit of a clue on what they're going to look like but nothing else really. It was a bit of expensive fun for us.

JayelleBee · 26/06/2012 12:11

Oh meant to say, they are quite ugly YANBU!

kelly2525 · 26/06/2012 13:25

I had two one at 16 weeks and one at 24 weeks, the first one looked like a skinned bird but I loved seeing him and the second one was even better, he had little chubby cheeks.

However I'm not on Facebook so wasn't the type of twat that forced the pictures on everyone.
