washable hankies

KDK12 · 13/06/2012 21:17

it's hayfever season and i want some washable hankies. i am fed up of using tissues, i inevitably try and use them more than once anyway, so they end up stuffed up my cuff (!) or in my pocket.

the thing is, if i saw someone else using one i think it might gross me out a bit. so perhaps i should just use them at home, where nobody will see? i mean, it's hayfever snot so it's not contagious or owt.

I think they're a bit yuk really, though I do keep a few around to use in the house only as they're much kinder to your nose if you have a stinking cold.

SoozyWoozy · 13/06/2012 21:20

Oh no, please don't. My DH and ILs are hanky users and they are the grossest thing going. Cold-type snot, hayfever snot, anything. Yuk!

If you use them, you HAVE to boil them separately from all of your other washing.

AMumInScotland · 13/06/2012 21:22

So long as you wash them on a hot wash, and don't keep the same one in use for ages, there's nothing yuck about them. They're much softer than tissues, after they've been through a few washes at least!

WorraLiberty · 13/06/2012 21:22

Oh god no, I thought only old people insisted on using them?

AMumInScotland · 13/06/2012 21:23

So why on MN are washable nappies great and washable hankies not?

Housewifefromheaven · 13/06/2012 21:24

Oh no! You have to peel them apart! Bits of crusty snot fall on the floor!

TheCunningStunt · 13/06/2012 21:25

They are greener! Nothing wrong with it. If more people thought reusable things were the norm it would be so much better. Just wash them and don't use the same one for ages. Much nicer to your nose and the environment. Do remember a few years ago, only old folk seemed to re-use bags? And now it's normal...recycling is normal now too. Mooncups are pretty common etc....let's have a hanky revival!!

TheCunningStunt · 13/06/2012 21:26

I used washable nappiesGrin. I'm a bit of a hippy though....

BadRoly · 13/06/2012 21:27

I use hankies at home. I always have at least one under my pillow. It drives dh to despair though Grin

OwlMother · 13/06/2012 21:27

I have them but only use them at home. Nice website here. www.atishoo.co.uk/

RecursiveMoon · 13/06/2012 21:28

Grin at Cunning's 'greener' hankies.

mumeeee · 13/06/2012 21:28

DH thinks washable hankies are more hygienic then tissues. I use tissues as you you can just throw them away although I'm beginning to think DH is right. Partly because pockets get full of used tissues. Washable hankies are more environs toy friendly.

Housewifefromheaven · 13/06/2012 21:29

My nans hankies are definitely greener :o

PorkyandBess · 13/06/2012 21:30

Yuck yuck yuck to hankies!

My mum uses them and I find it very unpleasant.

TheCunningStunt · 13/06/2012 21:30
Grin
Jodidi · 13/06/2012 21:31

I keep thinking we should use them as they are much nicer on your nose, and much better for the environment. I would lose them all the time though as I have no pockets in my work clothes and wear short sleeves so not even any cuffs to keep them in. I think possibly keeping it down my cleavage would cause a bit of a stir, so I'm reduced to a packet of tissues in my desk drawer.

KDK12 · 13/06/2012 21:33

i do use washable nappies, that's why it doesn't seem outrageously disgusting to me. but yeah, it's got the old lady factor that's for sure. i dunno. perhaps i will just do it in secret.

We use oldfashioned hankies. I really don't think they are a major health hazard in the general scheme of things. Crusty snot does NOT fall out of a slightly used hanky, this is in the same realm of hysteria as "eek, I once put my handbag on the floor of a public toilet" and "Don't wear shoes in my house that might have trodden on a bit of pavement with a micron of dog poo on it"

bulby · 13/06/2012 21:34

How are washable hankies any more yuck that washable knickers or as people have said washable nappies?

fossil97 · 13/06/2012 21:36

Grin at washable knickers

I mourn the demise of the handkerchief counters in John Lewis

KDK12 · 13/06/2012 21:36

and dammit OwlMother, now I want to spend £16 on 3 designer hankies! curse you internet!

My husband uses them and it's gross!

It's a habit that he and his brother have from when they're little. Always had to go out with clean pants and two, clean pressed hankies.

I find them gross.

SelfRighteousPrissyPants · 13/06/2012 21:45

I use them...then again I am 44. You don't get bits of tissue all over the washing like you do when you accidently wash tissues if that helps Grin

PorkyandBess · 13/06/2012 22:01

I don't stuff my worn knickers into my pocket or up my sleeve, so in that respect, I would say hankies are A LOT more yuck than knickers.

I can't actually remember the last time I blew my nose or had a cold; I'm not a snotty person, but if I was I would use tissues and once only.

Mintyy · 13/06/2012 22:04

Washable hankies are brilliant for sore noses - much gentler than tissues. Just buy a whole heap of them and only use once or twice. They hardly take up any room in the washing machine.
