to think Father's Day is for fathers

I went to the shop today and got a Father's Day card for next week and it irritated me to see the number of cards 'from the grandchildren'. It isn't grandparents day, the clue is in the name.

Lol, I worked for Clinton Cards about 25yrs ago and I got my Brother a card that said "Happy Father's Day from the cats" Grin

But YABU

I'm just very childish Blush

WorraLiberty · 09/06/2012 15:17

I meant YANBU

mynewpassion · 09/06/2012 15:17

There is father in grandfather.

AnyoneForTennis · 09/06/2012 15:17

Lots of dc don't have dads on the scene... Maybe this leaves them feeling left out?

FreudianSlipper · 09/06/2012 15:20

i always got my granddad a fathers day card because he was the best father in this world to his daughters and to his grandchildren (especially me)

did the same for my nanny too

applepieinthesky · 09/06/2012 15:20

Or perhaps it is to get more money out of us? I'm very cynical. Like the commercialisation of Valentines Day and Halloween. They seem to get bigger and bigger every year.

For my ds his grandad is the nearest thing he's got to a dad so I do think you are being rather mean spirited and unreasonable.

TheCatInTheHairnet · 09/06/2012 15:22

Seriously?! People sending their Dad a card from their children too irritates you?!!

applepieinthesky · 09/06/2012 15:24

It was the number of cards from grandchildren that irritated me when there wasn't a big selection to choose from anyway.

OP posts:
AnyoneForTennis · 09/06/2012 15:26

Irritated you?

Empusa · 09/06/2012 15:26

I think it makes perfect sense to celebrate grandfathers too for Father's day, I always use the day to say thankyou to my grandads, and this year will be the first year my dad gets to celebrate being a grandad. IME the grandparents are as important as the parents to a child

Petsinmypudenda · 09/06/2012 15:27

My grandfather is like a third parent to me. And i hope to be as close to my grandchildren one day

I like to show how much I value him. Why would it irritate you.

AThingInYourLife · 09/06/2012 15:30

"IME the grandparents are as important as the parents to a child"

As important?

Really?

I think that is rarely the case.

Fathers' Day is a crock of shit anyway.

AnyoneForTennis · 09/06/2012 15:31

I think they are very important in families with absent fathers! Male role model and all that....

Trioofprinces · 09/06/2012 15:32

YANBU - I agree with you completely. I only buy my dad one, I don't get him one from my kids after all he's not their father.

Doesn't bother me too mug what others do but I do think it's OTT personally.

HerMajestyQueenHillyzabethII · 09/06/2012 15:33

YANBU. Just marketing opportunistic nonsense. It's relentless.

Trioofprinces · 09/06/2012 15:33

That said I do understand the 'like a father' to me cards for those who have taken on a father role whilst not being the biological father.

piprabbit · 09/06/2012 15:34

Umm - my DCs make their grandad a card for Father's Day. They like to feel involved and they are fascinated by the idea that their grandad is my dad. They also make cards for DH (at home, school and nursery so it can get a bit busy on the mantelpiece).
I think it's rather nice and I don't have to pay Hallmark a penny.

SpottyTeacakes · 09/06/2012 15:35

What annoys me is how few cards there are for all the wonderful step dads out there Angry

Empusa · 09/06/2012 15:36

AThing They are in my family

Petsinmypudenda · 09/06/2012 15:38

As important?

Really?

Yep he help bring me up and is very active in his great grandchildrens lives.

AThingInYourLife · 09/06/2012 15:43

I'm sure there are grandfathers who are more important than fathers.

I'm just surprised that in someone's experience (presuming they live in the community) is that grandfathers are as important as parents.

Do they pay all the bills and do the day to day caring like a parent?

AnyoneForTennis · 09/06/2012 15:44

Many fathers live apart from dc and don't do all that as well

Empusa · 09/06/2012 15:45

As important doesn't mean "does all the same things"

Petsinmypudenda · 09/06/2012 15:47

Alot of parents don't pay all the bills or day to day caring though.

He loves us unconditionally and is there whenever for whatever. That makes him very important to me.
