To throw odd socks away to make a point?

I HATE dp having anything to do with the laundry (or pretty much anything) because he's so useless. To put a wash on he literally grabs a massive handful of mucky clothes and squashes them into the washing machine. This results in a million odd socks because he doesn't bother to pair them up first.

I'm so sick to fucking death of odd socks everywhere I've told him from now on that any odd socks I find will be thrown away instantly, even if they're new. I don't have time to fuck about pairing up socks because he's lazy and useless.

Errrr, why not just not pair them up? Confused

If he has to wear odd socks because they've not been paired then that's his lookout isn't it?

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 09/06/2012 15:11

We just put all the socks in a big box and whoever wants to put socks on their feet finds themself a pair or wears odd ones, we don't care which.
That said, there are six of us, and we have socks belonging to at least nine different people that have accumulated. Any with holes in get thrown away but that's as far as my sock management goes Grin Life is way too short to get wound up about socks.

FairToMiddlin · 09/06/2012 15:15

We have solved this problem by having only pure black or pure white socks.

DH can always find a pair.

I have ocd, I can't have odd socks lying around, it drives me insane and he knows this. He also leaves piles of grass around the garden, he's so irritating he makes me literally dream of living alone

How does it work pairing them up before they are washed? I can't see how they could be washed properly yet not come apart.

YABU. It's wasteful.

bumpkinbillionaire · 09/06/2012 15:27

Do you pair them up before they have been washed and dried?

Why?

WorraLiberty · 09/06/2012 15:27

Have you sought treatment for your OCD?

Just like FairToMiddlin, all our socks are either black or white.

genug · 09/06/2012 15:43

Get him a mesh sock bag. You need never handle another of his socks again.

MateyM00 · 09/06/2012 15:45

ah yes, but the minute you throw out one odd sock you will never know which sock it matches, then FOREVERMORE when you find an odd sock you will be convinced that you have thrown away its partner...

THIS WAY MADNESS LIES.....

BertieBotts · 09/06/2012 15:49

Have an odd sock box. Any odd ones go in there, then if you find an odd one, first you can look for it's pair before consigning it into the box.

I never pair up socks before washing them - I never realised anyone did!

TheEarlOfDoncaster1963 · 09/06/2012 16:12

The odd sock box/bag is the way to go. Everyone in our house has a little bag for odd socks (from Ikea) which hangs somewhere or is in a drawer. All odd socks go in there and then when the bag gets a bit full we tip them out and pair them. Takes minutes. Put all his odd ones in a carrier bag and let him pair them himself. I don't worry about making sure pairs go in the machine - they usually turn up within two or three loads anyway.

rhondajean · 09/06/2012 16:13

I bin odd socks about once a month.

I also now buy DH the black socks with the coloured heels and toes so it's easy for me him to match them up.

usualsuspect · 09/06/2012 16:16

We just wear odd socks in this house.

TrinityIsAFuckingRhino · 09/06/2012 16:26

you need some treatment for your ocd

a sock box

and leave him to wear odd socks if he can't find a pair

we just wear odd socks. Life is too short to bother faffing round trying to find a pair.

RedBlanket · 09/06/2012 16:57

I have a sock bag that they all go into. When it gets full i tip
It out and pair them up. Mostly they're all the same colour colour so it doesn't take that long.
Anything left over which doesn't have a pair either gets matched up with one the nearest colour or binned.

HecateTrivia · 09/06/2012 19:16

the same number of socks come out of the washing machine as go in it.

I just make a sock pile and have a merry old time matching them up. leftover ones are put in the drawer to be added to the sock pile from the next wash.

Since the only two sock colours we have here are black and grey, you'd think that would be an easy task but it's not Hmm they're all faded in different patterns and it can take ages comparing black socks to see which go together Grin

oldraver · 09/06/2012 19:20

Embrace the odd socks. My BF always wears on purpose 'odd' socks. Both DS and B/F have grey days of the week socks, DS insists on wearing the correct days, B/F mixes them up. He also has a 5 pack of stripey socks and wears odd ones all the time. So in therory there arn't any 'odd' ones

FairToMiddlin · 09/06/2012 19:28

DH's socks don't wear out evenly which either means he walks lopsidedly or some socks are getting washed more than others.

When there is more hole than sock - it gets chucked in the bin.

JoanOfNark · 09/06/2012 19:54

If your point is to buy more socks, sure go ahead. Otherwise, no.

Joiningthegang · 09/06/2012 21:34

Wow - you sOund a joy to live with - can your she do anything right?
The way my dh hangs out washing drives me insane - I want to redo it all or shout - but I don't bother - pick your fights - I just do the laundry and leave him to do something else.

Btw yabu

WhereYouLeftIt · 09/06/2012 21:48

"I have ocd, I can't have odd socks lying around"
So don't have them lying around - put them in his drawer, and he can find a pair from amongst them (or not). Make it his problem, not yours?

BackforGood · 09/06/2012 22:06

There's no point in pairing them up before putting the wash on, as - in all machines I've ever known - the wash throws stuff about to wash it, and things get separated anyway, surely ?? Confused
Once clean, I sort into who clothes belong to, but any pairing up is done (or not done) by the sock owner, nothing to do with me. Up to your dh, surely ?

5Fingered · 09/06/2012 22:56

They can't just go in the sock drawer like that as it would look a mess and it wouldn't be organised. Doesn't matter if it's his drawer, I would know they were like that and I'd just have to sort it out or I wouldn't settle.

I can't just get loads of black socks either as I wouldn't know if anyone had worn mine and it would just stress me out.
