Mrbojangles1 · 01/06/2012 21:28

I am not sure if this was racist or just very close to the bone

Right in the garden with mates partner and we started talking about the jubilee

I said " you going to a street party"
My mate siad "oh there is plenty on the river will be heaving with boats"
She then went inside to get her washing.
He said then said "I am not staying round here with all those pretenders with passports, I am going to Cornwall were the real English people are"

Shock

Btw I did try to clarify what he ment

But this comment felt way of base to me , should I say somthing to my mate it's a very new relationship I have meet him a few time but first time I have talked to him propley
AIBU or is he

Shock

What did he say when you tried to clarify?

Has he ever been to Cornwall, btw?!

HRH2shoesofMn · 01/06/2012 21:31

arn't people in cornwall, cornish?

Sallyingforth · 01/06/2012 21:32

Well I don't know about real English being in Cornwall.

I have friends in Cornwall and when I go to visit them they always talk about me "coming down from England"

AgentZigzag · 01/06/2012 21:37

If it's a new relationship and he's talking like that to you, I wouldn't say anything to your friend, give him enough rope and he'll hang himself.

If you say something it might look as though you're shit stirring and he'll just say either he didn't say it or you misunderstood.

Mrbojangles1 · 01/06/2012 21:39

Bighrflowers

Just mumbled somthing about feeling like a out cast in own land and somthing about it being a diffrent world

I then muttered I see you got the edl newsletter, laughed don't think he understood my joke ,figures

I did however point out if he dosent like it he is fee to live in cornwall

Not sure how we are gonna get on in the futher my mate really likes him and from all accounts he treating her very well she has had a real crap time with men

MsVestibule · 01/06/2012 21:46

Erm, I can't see how this isn't a racist comment. How do you think your friend would feel if she knew these were his views?

MyRoyalLentillyness · 01/06/2012 21:48

Racist no. Jingoistic yes and possibly veering into dangerously stupid territory - but I can't see how it's racist. Are you one of those who just can't wait to see racism in everything?

BigHRHFlowers · 01/06/2012 21:51

If he's coming out with comments like that in the early stages of a relationship I'd be worried he was building up to fully licenced citizen of Twuntonia.

SardineQueen · 01/06/2012 21:55

Initially I thought it meant that he didn't want to be up in Central London as it would be full of tourists. But that outcast in own land stuff isn't very promising.

But I think with these things the person there is best to judge and so if you felt he was being racist then he almost certainly was.

Mrbojangles1 · 01/06/2012 22:00

SardineQueen well that's what I thought as well but as the day went on and I thought about what he said it just jarred a little

I not convinced he's a fully paid up member of the bnp buy I do think he listens a bit to much to richard little jhon

Ahhh, the Kernewek contingent has arrived! Smile

Birdsgottafly · 01/06/2012 22:04

It depends on whether you have the sort of friendship were you criticise faults in each others partners. What your friend chooses to ignore is her choice and vise versa.

However, I would go to the meal and see how it goes, i agree that the more rope that you give him the quicker that he will hang himself.

Less damage done to your friend that way.

faeriefruitcake · 01/06/2012 22:04

I'm Cornish and the only English people are the Emit's.

NarkedPuffin · 01/06/2012 22:21

Or could he be a prize numpty?
