I am not sure if this was racist or just very close to the bone

Right in the garden with mates partner and we started talking about the jubilee

I said " you going to a street party"
My mate siad "oh there is plenty on the river will be heaving with boats"
She then went inside to get her washing.
He said then said "I am not staying round here with all those pretenders with passports, I am going to Cornwall were the real English people are"

Shock

Btw I did try to clarify what he ment

But this comment felt way of base to me , should I say somthing to my mate it's a very new relationship I have meet him a few time but first time I have talked to him propley
AIBU or is he

Well the cornish were always britons rather than anglo-saxons so not sure he's heading the right direction really. It would definitely put me off him.

Pendeen · 01/06/2012 23:43

Emmetts.

I'm Cornish.

English, American or Japanese your money is very welcome!

But the OP's comment is quite correct in that Cornwall is 99% white.

Actually it's 100% here!

GinevraMollyWeasley · 01/06/2012 23:46

While his opinions would fit right in with some of the older Cornish people I've met, he himself wouldn't- I lived there for 20 years and was still considered an emmet!

Well you are, you always will be, it is the blight inflicted on all those born on the wrong side of the river tamar. It is a blight I am familiar with having Cornish relatives.

GinevraMollyWeasley · 02/06/2012 16:12

Yes, I ruined any chance of being considered a local by moving back up country!

Mrsjay · 02/06/2012 16:18

I think people from corwall consider themselves cornish and a different race altogether Grin

people are twats OP and will say stupid twatty things

StanleyLambchop · 02/06/2012 16:19

I don't know where you are in the country but the M5 is jammed up at the moment, so good luck with getting to Cornwall if he is taking that route!!!

GoatsHaveRoyallyStrangeEyes · 02/06/2012 16:45

I'm from Cornwall and consider myself Cornish so tell him not only is he a twat he is also very, very wrong!

FrothyOM · 02/06/2012 17:09

I'm Cornish.

Because the population is almost 100% white in Cornwall, I think he's being racist. He has a poor grasp of British history for someone so proud of being a 'real' English person. Cornwall has it's own language and the Cornish people have Celtic origins so are more similar to the Welsh than the English.

CrispyCod · 02/06/2012 17:16

Clearly he feels he needs to be around 'white' people. Yes, a racist thing to do however it's his choice at the end of the day. He's running away though because the UK isn't going to get 'whiter' anytime soon. Is he going to hide in Cornwall forever!

He needs to try and embrace the change and address his ignorance.

OhNoMyFanjo · 02/06/2012 17:20

By moving to cornwa he would become what he is trying to leave behind Grin

JosephineCD · 02/06/2012 17:24

Why isn't the UK going to get any "whiter" anytime soon? That's racist isn't it?

PurplePidjinghamPalace · 02/06/2012 17:28

If Cornwall's anything like the tourist hotspot i live in, the locals are either hiding or working. I only go to the supermarket between 9pm and 9am between May and September Hmm

If he is not Cornish he will be viewed as the pretender Grin

KalSkirata · 02/06/2012 17:38

my family are cornish and we're all happy to be English too. son number 1 went down there a few weeks back for the first time and was happy to get back here where there is more than one shop Grin

monkeymoma · 02/06/2012 17:43

he sounds v racist to me

I wouldn't tell your friend cause he might pull the old me'n'you Vs the world thing with her, but could you maybe bring up a topic of conversation on front of her that makes him show his true colours to her first hand?

madonnawhore · 02/06/2012 17:43

I feel sorry for those people who say they feel like 'an outcast in their own land'.

The world must seem like a very tough place when you're that stupid.

Mrsjay · 02/06/2012 17:51

I do find stupid ignorant people very lonely people madonna

madonnawhore · 02/06/2012 17:54

It must be exhausting to be scared and angry all the time.

monkeymoma · 02/06/2012 17:56

it does seem like a LOT of hard work
I don't think I could commit to it...

Mrsjay · 02/06/2012 17:58

It has to be tiresome eh all that hatred and fear , of what other human beings Hmm Immigration isn't new and unless somebody can go back generations then they wont know their true heritage will they , or is that just my romantic idea ?

sallymonella · 02/06/2012 19:50

going to Cornwall were the real English people are

Ha ha ha ha!

I just read the OP to my Cornish husband because I knew what his reaction to that line would be. Classic :)

But on a serious note, this guy sounds like a dick, a dick who believes too much of what he reads in the Mail.
