to ask my dad not to do this

Me and DS (10wks) currently live at home with my family.

My dad sometimes when holding him, if his dummy falls out will put it in his own mouth then back in DS's. Of course I do this myself, but I'm his mum and find other people doing this quite icky. My dad also has awful teeth and I just think of all the germs. I'd much rather he didn't.

I'm aware I may be being totally PFB, would it be U of me to ask him not to? Am I U for being bothered by it?

Just tell him not to do it.
Ask him to rinse it first or give it to you to clean.

I wouldn't want somebody doing that with my baby's dummy either.

monkeymoma · 01/06/2012 20:19

but you do it too, which is just as disgusting! your mouth isn't germ free just because you're a mum!

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/06/2012 20:19

I am a total slattern and don't care about germs but even I think this is a bad idea. Could you get some fake dentist to tell you it is dreadful for their oral hygiene and pass this information onto DF as "I never knew but it turns out..."?

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/06/2012 20:19

I missed that you do it. You are not supposed to either.

scarletforya · 01/06/2012 20:21

YANBU

Make him stop!

scuzy · 01/06/2012 20:22

unless he was a smoker or something i would grin and bear it. pick your battles. or else pass your ds to him without a dummy or only when is due a feed.

Bingdweller · 01/06/2012 20:22

You should stop doing it too & let your dad know that from now on, it's a habit that stops!

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 01/06/2012 20:22

I think you should stop doing it and say to your Dad that you have just read how bad it is and how full of germs our mouths are (worse than dogs) so you don't want anyone doing it anymore. Seems reasonable.

EverybodysSleepyEyed · 01/06/2012 20:23

You both need to stop - mouths are full of germs - even yours!

He probably only does it because he saw you do it!

Floggingmolly · 01/06/2012 20:25

Nobody should do this! To put it very crudely, there are more germs in your mouth than up your arse. And that's a scientifically proven fact Grin

TidyDancer · 01/06/2012 20:26

YABU unless you stop doing it too. Your mouth is just as dirty as your dad's. Saying 'of course I do this myself, but I'm his mum' is a bit silly.

Notfootball · 01/06/2012 20:26

YANBU but I saw a mum out today with her baby's dummy in her mouth and I pulled a cat's bum face so I fell like this about any adult "cleaning" a baby's dummy in this way. Just tell your dad not to do it, should be easy since it's your own dad. I had to tell my MIL to stop putting her finger in my DD's mouth, went down like a poo sarnie.

scuzy · 01/06/2012 20:28

so i presume all of you watch your kids 24/7 to make sure nothing gets in their mouths?! he will be licking the floor soon!!

simperingsally · 01/06/2012 20:29

You need to stop first then its easy to tell your dad to as well.

MummySunshine · 01/06/2012 20:29

Thanks all for your feedback, I will stop too! Didn't realise quite how bad it was, always thought it was a normal thing for mums to do (my mum probably did it)

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/06/2012 20:30

scuzy these are specifically the germs that cause tooth decay. Your child is not born with them, they are introduced. Stuff off the floor might give them D and V or just a better immune system but this could lead to early cavities and who wants those?

scuzy · 01/06/2012 20:30

early cavities on a 10 week old? Hmm

ginmakesitallok · 01/06/2012 20:31

totally normal thing for Mums to do!!!!

EverybodysSleepyEyed · 01/06/2012 20:31

scuzy - at 10wks my kids wouldn't have been licking the floor - a couple of moths later though they would have been!

On the other extreme, I have a friend who carries a flask of hot water that she uses to 'sterilise' the dummy every time it is spat out.

HildaOgden · 01/06/2012 20:31

Eeeugh,I think that's gross :-(.

Tell your dad that you are stopping it too.Otherwise you don't really have a leg to stand on if you're still at it.

monkeymoma · 01/06/2012 20:31

scuzy the floor probably has less germs than a human mouth! a human mouth is FILTHY! have you ever seen how infected bite wounds get? grim!

Firawla · 01/06/2012 20:31

yanbu that is disgusting but i would stop doing it yourself too

BabyDubsEverywhere · 01/06/2012 20:32

Just save the awkward conversation and buy one of those dummy clips so that if it drops out of his mouth it wont actually go anywhere, just hang off him until its put back in... easy peasy :)

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/06/2012 20:32

The germs are introduced then. All ready for the first teeth to appear. It really is not good. I know someone who teaches dentists and they told me not to do it.

scuzy · 01/06/2012 20:33

babydubs thats the right idea. def buy a clip.
