They do it on the VOICE . Artist can mean many things. SINGER is precise.

OP posts:
JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 29/05/2012 18:25

Oh it's to distinguish themselves from people who - er - sing. "Artists" yodel, gurn, and have traumatic personal histories. Sometimes they write their own songs, often they just slaughter other peoples' with the yodelling and gurning

I hate houses being called properties.

TroublesomeEx · 29/05/2012 18:31

I hate houses being called properties too.

Artist implies an expertise. Anyone can sing, not everyone is a 'vocal artist'.

Mrsjay · 29/05/2012 19:18

its like adele she is an Artist but cheryl cole is a singer Grin you have to warble and have a bit of angst to be an Artist Wink I also hate houses being properties its your house you moron !!

theincredibequeenofwands · 29/05/2012 19:28

Not as bad as a room being called a 'space'.

Hmm
Mrsjay · 29/05/2012 20:05

oh god yes this is a lovely 'space' i blame sarah beanie and kirstie allsop for that ,

TroublesomeEx · 30/05/2012 08:09

MrsJay You're right. I also think you might need a bit of integrity and a direction. A focus and a passion. You need to believe in what you are doing/singing/communicating to be an artist.

FurCough · 30/05/2012 08:21

it's the industry standard definition to cover bands, solo artists, musicians and other performers. I always preferred 'the turn' Wink

MsKittyFane · 30/05/2012 08:46

Probably off topic but I can't stand people who call a weekend away a 'road trip' as if they are some free spirit taking off into the back and beyond. I want to say 'you're off to spend two nights in a premier inn FGS!'

JamieandTheOlympicTorch · 30/05/2012 08:49

I sounded sniffy yesterday. I am not doubting the existence of artists, just not on the Voice

CadleCrap · 30/05/2012 09:04

They also needed to have been on a journey (No 53 Bus doesn't count)

Mrsjay · 30/05/2012 09:20

I dont think voice contestants are artists either even if they have been on a journey they are still on telly trying to get a recording contract sigh

Cockwomble · 30/05/2012 11:01

My definition of an artist in singing terms would be someone who writes their own material, and does the hard graft. Not some airy fairy bint who just sings other people's songs wearing nought but a bikini.

So yeah the adele and cheryl cole thing Grin

chunkythighs · 30/05/2012 11:05

Oh Yea! Similar to actors referring to their job as 'the craft' Hmm. True sign that an actor takes themselves far too seriously.

QueenElizaBeatHer · 30/05/2012 11:08

I'm with you OP!

BobbiFleckman · 30/05/2012 11:09

singers are the ones who are grateful to have you listen, artists are the ones we're grateful to have walk through the door...
Fur Cough - are you in the biz? I do adore "the turn" as a rather derogatory snip = "she was just someone who was shagging the turn adn now she's running the show" etc etc

ComposHat · 30/05/2012 11:40

Probably off topic but I can't stand people who call a weekend away a 'road trip' as if they are some free spirit taking off into the back and beyond. I want to say 'you're off to spend two nights in a premier inn FGS!

I agree, my pet bugbear is the cloyingly twee '5 sleeps til x event' I feel like screaming, 'you are an adult who can, I presume, tell the time. If you must share this trivia with me at least tell me how many days and hours it is.'

kittyandthefontanelles · 30/05/2012 12:00

I hate track instead of song. Blurgh

squoosh · 30/05/2012 12:07

Chunkthighs Yes! I bloody hate actors who refer to their feckin' craft. Are you a carpenter making beautiful furniture? No? Well then it's not a craft!

It's usually the uber wanky actors who use this term. Or lightweights who want to become uber wanky.

An artist implies someone like say Chris Martin who writes, perhaps even produces and generally has input on image, lyrics etc. A singer is just any old joe bloggs on the X Factor. There is a difference.

squoosh · 30/05/2012 12:55

Chris Martin an artist? Ahem. :)

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 30/05/2012 14:02

I had a shiney pound for every time Jessie J said it on the weekend. I would be quite well off today.

I came on here, as an artist yeah to talk to my artists one on one, artist to artist, everyone on here is an artist. Im an artist. Your an artist.

KellyElly · 30/05/2012 14:03

I think you're in the global minority there squoosh considering Coldplays sales figures Grin

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 30/05/2012 14:04

I find them really annoying, I`ll join you squoosh

squoosh · 30/05/2012 14:19

Well their sales are certainly huge.

But artist? Nah, can't bring myself to agree. :)
