'are u free friday lol'
'want to play today lol hun maybe afternoon lol'
'you're babby is cute wen you home lol'

All genuine examples of comments I've read on facebook this week (on photos/status updates posted by various friends).

Since when did 'lol' become a replacement for '?', '!', and '.'?

Oooh. Grinding own teeth in empathy with you OP.

Shanghaidiva · 01/05/2012 11:47

YABU to spend time on facebook - it's the work of the devil Wink

MinnieBar · 01/05/2012 11:47

Delete the bastards.

ExitPursuedByABear · 01/05/2012 11:47

FB is the work of the devil.

LilRedWG · 01/05/2012 11:48

Do you think they are confused and think that lol stands for lots of love?

No excuse though.

usualsuspect · 01/05/2012 11:49

Lol

HeartsJandJ · 01/05/2012 11:50

Hun ... hun ... HUN

I hate it!

Almost as much as "hubby" or "fella"

Kveta · 01/05/2012 11:50

but I love facebook! It's not the website that is the problem! It's friends (and at least one family member) who have lost the ability to write in even vaguely comprehensible english.

I can't delete the bastards, as they are friends of friends, who comment on photos that I also see (and have a lot of friends producing babies at the moment, so loads of newborn pictures Envy). I want to correct every single one of them though Blush

oh yes, and 'hun' makes me go all stabby.

It makes me think of Atilla.

Can't abide lol. Hateful spewing. Speaks volumes to me.

Birdsgottafly · 01/05/2012 11:52

It's personal chioce whether you punctuate or use good grammar, on FB, it's you that doesn't 'get it'.

Made up spellings are fine, to.

MrsBovary · 01/05/2012 11:52

Some people do use 'lol' in place of the full stop/question/exclamation mark. I don't understand it.

Another trend seems to be dropping the 'g' from any and all words ending with the letter (apostrophe omitted of course).

Horrible place, Facebook

OTheHugeManatee · 01/05/2012 11:54

For some people a kind of vacuous giggle really does get used to mark the end of every single sentence. So perhaps for such people ending a written sentence with 'lol' is an accurate reflection of the way they speak. It's pretty irritating though.

Indith · 01/05/2012 11:58

I have several perfectly well educated friends who use "hun" and txt spk on Facebook. It makes me want to delete their posts. I have people from MN on FB, what if they see? I'll get kicked off and then where will I go?

Kveta · 01/05/2012 12:07

:o Indith yes, I have very well educated friends who do it too. Medics, lawyers, others who have far greater earning potential than I will ever have. And they still say 'lol' and 'hun' instead of writing in real English.

OThe - my wee sister is one who says 'lol' and 'hun' on FB - yet in real life she never laughs or smiles really.

OP posts:
ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 01/05/2012 12:11

Get rid of them. These people have no place in your life!

TheHouseOnTheCorner · 01/05/2012 12:15

Manatee I may use "Vacuous giggle" in place of punctuation on Fb from now on!

I'm feeling very tired today vacuous giggle

Sausages for tea vacuous giggle

Dh has gone fishing vacuous giggle

MrsBovary · 01/05/2012 12:18

I haven't found it to be the well educated who use the 'hun' and text speak, I'm afraid.

OldGreyWiffleTest · 01/05/2012 12:28

It's the same with 'bubs' or 'bubba' for baby. Hate it !

doormat · 01/05/2012 12:34

mrsbovary what an utterly obnoxious statement...i am currently doing a degree an i use txt spk...i am also a middle aged woman with 6 grankids...

if ppl choose to use txt spk on their fb status...its not like it is an essay for uni...fb has its place in society....so what..life is too short to be picky on grammar

OTheHugeManatee · 01/05/2012 12:35

Kveta - That is intriguing about your sister. Whenever I read 'lol' used instead of punctuation I imagine a sort of inane titter. But you say your sister never actually laughs out loud. Do you think she is all lol'd out by the time it gets to real-life interactions?

Kveta · 01/05/2012 12:41

MrsBovary it seems to be a mix on my FB feed - mainly morons the less well educated, but some well educated folk who want to be 'down with the kids' or something?

OThe my sister is strange. No idea what her motivation is, but she has started reading the Daily Mail in the past 2 years, and her command of the english language has declined steadily ever since. Not that I am implying the two are related in any way...

OP posts:
MrsBovary · 01/05/2012 12:42

Hardly obnoxious, doormat. I'm stating my own personal experience.

doormat · 01/05/2012 12:44

well there are ppl out there who are educated and use txt spk...personal choice, for different apps
