I have book to go to a manga convention next month with my best mate and really looking forward to it because it is right near the end of my degree and I'm getting fancy dress together Blush

The only problem is that my bezzie has invited her bloke. He doesnt like manga and taking the piss out of me is his passion. He calls it banter but it really gets to me sometimes (and I am not that soft, I can stick up for myself...I'm a trainee teacher Grin), I think it's more because she just lets him go at it whenever we see each other more than anything else and I know he will have a field day there.

AIBU for feeling a bit deflated?

Well if he says you're sad for going to a manga convention tell him he's even sadder for going to one when he doesn't like it. Does he not have a life or something because I don't have the time to do things I don't like.

DinahMoHum · 28/04/2012 19:03

youre not, why on earth would she invite him???

otaku · 28/04/2012 19:06

they want to make it a weekend, I feel a bit hijacked really I do maths, I know what a third wheel is...

screw him! I'm gonna have fun :D

I go to all the uk manga and anime conventions Grin

I took DH to try and convert him once. Failed miserably.

Luckily we bumped into another nice chap who had brought his equally bored brother so we ditched him / them in the bar and had loads of fun!

I haven't been this year due to baby/ finances but am going next year Grin
Can't wait, I've missed my friends loads

HeathRobinson · 28/04/2012 20:01

YANBU. At least he'll be outnumbered by people who do like manga!

otaku · 28/04/2012 20:13

Hey Eveyone, thanks for the replies! I have womaned up now and have a Wine

that's funny kayano that sounds like a blessing for all involved Grin
I'm heading to the MCM in london, I'm new to all this so really looking forward to it [cosplaying geek emoticon]

My middle DD is a major Manga/anime fan (i like anime).

Sorry for hijacking, but do these do a round the country tour, or the same time each year?

Kayano · 28/04/2012 20:29

Is that London expo in may? I have loads of cosplay friends and cosplayed as kamikaze kaitou jeanne once lol

Never again

I prefer to just get pissed

Kayano · 28/04/2012 20:34

Birds. There are 2 main summer conventions that happen in August time
Amecon is running this year. It often alternates with Ayacon.

In April there is Kitacon which has just been gutted to have missed it it's not happening next year though.

And there is London expo in may and (I think) November. Expo is mainly a day thing open to all ages but the proper cons are usually 16+ with special badges for under 18s to stop them buying drink

never works badge swapping

Those are more a long weekend thing running from Friday - Sunday and taking place at uni campus with accom available.

I love it Grin

I've prob totally outed myself if I hadn't already done
So last night!

lurkingaround · 28/04/2012 20:41

Jeez, this is a whole new language.

Can I be the geek here and ask what are you all talking about?

otaku · 28/04/2012 20:53

lurking to put it crudely manga is like japanese comics, in japan it is a media in it's own right, with loads of genres and loads of different stuff for different ages. It really is worth a try plus loads of quircky people follow it Grin

My pfb love manga and anime, and has been known to go to Whitby Goth weekend painted blue and wearing what looks suspiciously like a red and black dressing gown kimono Grin He has a full set of Naruto headbands too...
My favourite is Schroedinger's whale from "Ah! My Goddess" Grin that was when I decided "that comic crap" might not actually be crap at all and admitted I'd done the "middle aged mum prejudging" thing...

Birdsgottafly · 28/04/2012 20:56

The most known Manga is Naruto, pokemon etc.

Think Japanese animation. You might know Studio Ghibli, Ponyo, Return of the Cat, Arriety, etc

www.onlineghibli.com/films.php

There are numerous animated television series, mainly featuring Japanese teenagers.

McHappyPants2012 · 28/04/2012 20:59

Don't know what you are on about, but why would any one go to a convention they know nothing about

Kayano · 28/04/2012 21:01

I've been to the Ghibli museum in Tokyo Grin

I took my mother and will one day take my daughter who will be dressed in cosplay lol

otaku · 28/04/2012 21:01

My personal favourates are Fullmetal Alchemist and Blue Exorcist they are like a more grown up extension of the fantasy genre Smile I love a good scrap

Kayano · 28/04/2012 21:02

Mchappy

For the craic
The people Grin
To learn

But most importantly

The bar. There is always a games room with like every console known to man

lurkingaround · 28/04/2012 21:03

So much to know..... Grin
The only name I recognise is Pokemon.

How did you all start into this stuff?

Birdsgottafly · 28/04/2012 21:05

We get most of our costumes and accessories from China.

I have an ISA away for a visit around Asia, in a few years time, which will include the full anime tours.

Is there a mixed age group that dress up so i don't look like a sad old mad woman

Don't know why i've never researched this.

Pom, i love the Goth weekend, it's amazing and a great excuse to wear a corset in public.

lurkingaround · 28/04/2012 21:08

And again I say.....so much to learn!!!!

I really know sooo little.

Birdsgottafly · 28/04/2012 21:11

"How did you all start into this stuff?"

My DD, now 14 was very into Pokemon and Dragons. She became obsessed with Japanese culture and watched 'Kiki's delivery service', then started to track down different types of anime.

HMV has a section, it is on the high street. We are lucky in Liverpool, because we have shops that sell a range of stuff.

The animation is beautiful and the stories are about honour and have strong female charactures.

otaku · 28/04/2012 21:14

Most manga conventions have games rooms, parties, shopping, talks, performances and music. All involing alcohol. Last time I went I got challenged to a game dual by this random guy who was giving me the eye, but then I thrashed him so he stormed off Grin

OP posts:
otaku · 28/04/2012 21:16

kayano you have no idea how envious I am. How did you get on to this holiday? I wanna know!
