The grand national is cruel to horses

Alot of the horses will be injured and whipped into going faster, it's also a long race course.

I can't believe people would bet on this event

Oh sorry ok.

Now it's on my local news as Synchronised was from Gloucester. He won the Gold Cup whatever that is.

Chubfuddler · 14/04/2012 17:27

I do tend towards cat girl's view that there clearly is cruelty in racing but it isn't inherently cruel.

I was pleased to see that despite the close finish neither jockey was using the whip.

RabidAnchovy · 14/04/2012 17:27

Sad more horses killed for this so called sport

Flightty · 14/04/2012 17:27

Oh and I crossed posts with Zukie who said almost precisely the same, but you still chose to have a little go at me and ignore her post.

Should I take that personally?

catgirl1976 · 14/04/2012 17:28

The Gold Cup is a huge NH race run at Cheltenham, which has just as many accidents as the GN but no one starts threads about because they only get upset about horse welfare one day a year

theinets · 14/04/2012 17:28

It's sad but a price worth paying for our pleasure.

Flightty · 14/04/2012 17:29

Chub I thought they were mostly using whips...the winner certainly was slightly further back.

Codandchops · 14/04/2012 17:29

OMG I just KNEW a horse had died when I saw that black tent AND it was the "favourite". AngryAngryAngry.

Poor bloody horse died making vast amounts of cash for people. Disgusting, how many more have to die at this bloody race? And still they defend the height of fences etc.

ilovesooty · 14/04/2012 17:29

Exactly.

Chubfuddler · 14/04/2012 17:30

Not right at the end they didn't. I've no doubt that was only because the winning jockey got in so much trouble last year.

Flightty · 14/04/2012 17:30

And the winner was bleeding from his right back leg.

I'm not going to respond to this weirdy poster called theinets, because I think they're probably on the wind up.

Kayano · 14/04/2012 17:31

Who said a
Horse could
Only
Be whipped 8 times in the whole race?

I saw Katie Wales whipping the shit out of her horse when it started to drop back

Sparklingbrook · 14/04/2012 17:31

Oh so loads of horses die in horse racing. It's just that we don't get to hear about it. That's ok then.

I don't generally watch ANY horse racing and only sa this one because I was at a friend's hoe and it was on.

Now I know a stat for one of the other races I shall make a point of complaining about that too - much good may it do me......as long as people make money that is all that matters.Angry

Flightty · 14/04/2012 17:32

Zukie please please don't apologise. Ob and me go back a way. I assume she just doesn't like me.

And I completely agree with you.

Chubfuddler · 14/04/2012 17:32

Animals die making vast wads of cash for human beings in the food industry every single day. I think theinets kind of has a point actually.

Clearly I am going against the received wisdom here.

Lockdown · 14/04/2012 17:33

Yes the winner was bleeding. They wiped it off just after the cameras got close up. What a brutal race, it's horrifying to watch the horses go down. Disgraceful treatment of such fine animals.

PurpleRomanesco · 14/04/2012 17:35

Poor old Synchronised, Beautiful horse.

FWIW I think the reason he threw his jockey is because he wanted to run and the jockey was holding him back.

This can happen a lot in big races because there is such a high level of energy and the horses (understandably) get impatient and frustrated.

Don't have a go! I just didn't want some of you to be unnecessarily upset at the thought of Synchronised being terrified before the race. This is unlikely, If he had of been truly frightened there would have been little chance of catching him.

Cheltenham Festival Fatality News

LineRunner · 14/04/2012 17:35

Weird Al and Killyglen both being treated by vets apparently.

The winner NC was certainly seen bleeding. The trainer has announced that NC will be immediately retired following the surprise win.

Lockdown · 14/04/2012 17:35

Killing animals to eat and killing animals for sport are two vastly different things to my mind.

ChaoticAngel · 14/04/2012 17:36

The GN seems to be the race that gets most publicity/attention, even from those who normally don't take any notice of horse racing generally. Maybe that's why there aren't loads of threads about other races.
