To find the comic Simon Amstell really creepy?

I've never heard of him before but he really, really gives me the cringe and, having tried to watch his stand up show for about five or so minutes tonight, I've also discovered he's not in the least bit funny either. Judging by the reaction from the audience, I don't think many people in it found him very funny either.

Dire.

He completely reminds me of an old female colleague of mine

She was Jewish, with a similar sense of humour. Very droll and dry. But very clever.

blapbird · 09/04/2012 23:28

I find him very insightful and vulnerable, I love his comedy

notnowbernard · 09/04/2012 23:29

I think he's a very funny man and thought the stand-up show was laugh-out-loud funny

Why creepy?

Cathycomehome · 09/04/2012 23:29

I quite fancy him.

WorraLiberty · 09/04/2012 23:29

I don't think I know him?

notnowbernard · 09/04/2012 23:30

He used to present T4 and also Never Mind The Buzzcocks

ThistleWhistle · 09/04/2012 23:31

I'd not seen him do stand up before and I thought he was very funny. I laughed out loud, a lot. He is a bit odd, but that's part of his comedy persona I thought.

aquashiv · 09/04/2012 23:34

I like him and like his dry wit. I watched him tonight with my head cocked to one side cringing it was really really bad.

Fillybuster · 09/04/2012 23:37

I think he's very very funny. He made me properly laugh out loud several times, which is rare. And yes, quite oddly fanciable too.

Definitely not creepy.

WorraLiberty · 09/04/2012 23:38

Oh him!! Blush

YANBU

I don't really find him creepy, but I've never once found him funny...even though I love Never Mind the Buzzcocks.

Hyperballad · 09/04/2012 23:40

I think he's brill, loved him on Buzzcocks and went to see his live stand up a couple of years ago. Very clever and funny guy. Not creepy to me, perhaps he's an acquired taste!

blapbird · 09/04/2012 23:43

hear him on this pure genius!

Perriwinkle · 09/04/2012 23:47

Well, he's obviously an acquired taste. He's like a geeky, billy no mates middle class teen who's spent his formative years holed up in his bedroom.

His show came across to me as very amateurish - worse than something you'd see at a Student Union on comedy night.

He's ewww and uggghh all mixed up together.

Oh, he's v funny. We went to see him in Regent's Park Open Air Theatre last summer and he was really good (and much, much ruder than on TV).

HalfPastWine · 10/04/2012 00:18

He has a really annoying face, one I wouldn't get tired of slapping Grin

Heyyyho · 10/04/2012 00:21

I remember him On pop world when he was about 15 !

Tranquilidade · 10/04/2012 00:23

I agree with you OP. I love comedy but put his show on tonight and was very Hmm Didn't find him even remotely amusing

mummybare · 10/04/2012 00:24

YABU

He's hilarious.

HalfPastWine · 10/04/2012 00:25

Actually <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=comedian+eye+liner&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&biw=1280&bih=622&tbm=isch&tbnid=is6gx9NQmNtggM:&imgrefurl=www.newscientist.com/blogs/culturelab/comedy/&docid=qaT6dunY88BIyM&imgurl=www.newscientist.com/blogs/culturelab/2011/11/21/rexfeatures_1285595e.jpg&w=600&h=524&ei=t2-DT5PzGYPL8QOO98GUBg&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=110&vpy=179&dur=1164&hovh=210&hovw=240&tx=158&ty=114&sig=106970232966787987241&page=1&tbnh=124&tbnw=139&start=0&ndsp=19&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0,i:69" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Tim Minchin is creepier.

pippop1 · 10/04/2012 00:31

He was brought up in Gants Hill, like me. I feel some loyalty to him.

EggyFucker · 10/04/2012 00:35

I much prefer Simon to the Nob Head that is Ricky Gervais

I dislike cruelty in an entertainer. Simon seems very sweet.

JosephineCD · 10/04/2012 00:40

I hate comedians like him. Marcus Brigstocke and Jack Whitehall are two others that I can't stand.

topshelfrita · 10/04/2012 00:56

Cathy, he's GAY. And Eggy, when he was the host on Buzzcocks cruelty was definitely on the agenda. A guest on the show, boy-band member, walked off because of Amstell's very bitchy rude comments about the chap's wife. (some reality TV 'star') He can be very funny but also quite annoying. Ow -- this fence is uncomfortable. He also did a comedy series about his family, only ran for one series but it was 'funny if you can bear it/car-crash TV' sort of thing IYSWIM.

CremeEggThief · 10/04/2012 10:18

YABU! I love him and find him very funny indeed.

janelikesjam · 10/04/2012 10:18

I saw him on NeverMindThe Buzzcocks when he was extremely nasty (not funny, just nasty) to one of the pannelists about his girlfriend. The panellist walked off, it was a great moment.
