Dog milk?

Terriblyconcerned · 09/04/2012 00:56

My dsis is pregnant with her first child. We spoke tonight and she told me that she has heard that dog milk is the next best thing to breast feeding. As she has four dogs, she has frozen batches of their milk in case she has a problem breast feeding. Am I bring unreasonable to say that I don't think this is a great idea?

Sorry but eewww.

HalfPastWine · 09/04/2012 01:01

Is this a wind up?

Snowboarder · 09/04/2012 01:03

Ha ha. Good one OP.

I didn't know Medela did a canine pump attachment - or did she go for manual expression?

SeaHouses · 09/04/2012 01:03

How does dairying of dogs work? Do they keep on producing milk once the puppies are weaned? How do you milk them? Do they produce a surplus while feeding the puppies?

Terriblyconcerned · 09/04/2012 01:04

Oh gosh, no, not a wind up at all. My sister swears she has read this in a medical journal. I was very surprised when she said it, but she has a lot of unusual ideas.

FF is based on cattle milk, are dogs closer to our natural milk makeup?

Bit concerned that any individual has four lactating bitches, though.

[channels the doghouse]

Cheddars · 09/04/2012 01:07

My dogs actually moo if they don't get milked every day. One of those things about dog ownership that nobody ever tells you about.

Terriblyconcerned · 09/04/2012 01:08

Old lady - I think that is exactly dsis' point, that we are closer to canine make up than cows. I wouldn't worry about the lactating females. She lives on a farm and has a lot of animals around.

Terriblyconcerned · 09/04/2012 01:09

Cheddars, I think you are making fun of me.

I'm googling and finding questions about feeding puppies on human milk/formula based on cattle milk but configured for human babies. Nothing about feeding babies on bitch milk.

PurpleRomanesco · 09/04/2012 01:10

YABU, The baby will woof it up.

You would be barking to think it was wrong.

Snowboarder · 09/04/2012 01:11

Tsk tsk Cheddars, you're clearly not giving the subject of Dog Milk the gravitas that it so clearly deserves.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 09/04/2012 01:12

Four lactating bitches suggests she is running a puppy farm. I live on a mixed cattle/crop farm and have never had as many as four lactating bitches.

(Hundreds of lactating sheep and cattle, though.)

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 09/04/2012 01:13

Terribly, bobobo and chimpanzees are closer to us then either cattle or canines, has she contacted the local zoo?

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 09/04/2012 01:14

bonobo

Terriblyconcerned · 09/04/2012 01:15

Oh. I think now that everyone is making fun of me. I understand, it must seem very humorous. I'm just concerned that my sister is making the wrong choices. She is very bohemian.

No, she doesn't have a puppy farm. They grow lavender.

Me? Noooooo.
Mooooooo

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 09/04/2012 01:18

If you're real, she's nuts. There's a reason humans invented FF.

Has she been reading about the mythical origins of Rome, where Romulus and Remus were raised by a she-wolf?

Terriblyconcerned · 09/04/2012 01:21

OK, yes, I see you're making fun. That's great, very comical. I would just like some advice. What should I say? My dsis is spiky. Once I told her that I thought she shouldn't swear so much. She set fire to my shed.

OP posts:
OldLadyKnowsNothing · 09/04/2012 01:24

Ok, she's nuts. Contact Social Services if she actually tries feeding canine milk to her baby.

Or maybe find out more about the make-up of canine milk v cattle milk v sheep milk v goat milk v soya milk. Maybe she's right.

(But I would remain concerned about anyone who has access to four lactating bitches.)

PurpleRomanesco · 09/04/2012 01:25

I'm sorry. Did you get a new shed?

And did she stop swearing?

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 09/04/2012 01:25

[Shady, is this you? Grin ]

Terriblyconcerned · 09/04/2012 01:32

My sister is not nuts! She has strong opinions and the incident with the shed was just because.... Right. What happened was we were in my garden and she'd said that my petunias were fucking pathetic. They weren't actually. I said, please mind your language. She was lighting a cigarette and flicked the match at the floor - next to my shed. It caught alight.

She lives on a lavender farm. They have a lot of dogs. I don't think that is the issue here, really I don't.

Terriblyconcerned · 09/04/2012 01:34

Who is shady?

OP posts:
SydSaid · 09/04/2012 07:51

She has got it all wrong. It's rat milk that's best for baby.
