a chicken before I put it in the oven?
Why do you need to wash something that is about to be cooked for one and a half hours at a hot temperature?
Do you wash your beef as well, how about your bacon?

Washing meat is bad, it spreads the germs everywhere.

Are you meant to wash them???Confused

BunnyLebowski · 03/04/2012 16:42

People who wash meat = utter loons.

HTH.

nobutyeahbut · 03/04/2012 16:43

Washing them spreads bacteria - you shouldn't do it.

hiddenhome · 03/04/2012 16:43

I will wash a whole chicken, but nothing else. I wash it because I keep chickens and they're dirty things Grin

Rilson · 03/04/2012 16:43

I only wash my hands when cooking,my mum however runs all meat under the tap before cooking.

howcomes · 03/04/2012 16:43

I don't wash the chicken either, I remember some
Tv chef saying that people who did this actually risked contaminating more of their kitchen surfaces as the water splashed around the sink, dripped on counters, floor etc.

TiggyD · 03/04/2012 16:44

You are meant to NOT wash them. It will just coat any lurgy evenly all over it and everybody you know and love will die.

cheekybarsteward · 03/04/2012 16:45

'Rinsing your mince' , is that a euphenism? Grin

Hebiegebies · 03/04/2012 16:45

Never wash a chicken in the kitchen sink unless you give it a mega clean afterwards - and the walls & taps etc

squoosh · 03/04/2012 16:47

cheekybarsteward sounds vile doesn't it? :)

Abcinthia · 03/04/2012 16:47

I thought you weren't meant to wash them because it's unhygienic and spreads germs or something like that.

cheekybarsteward · 03/04/2012 16:49

I was watching 'real housewives' and the barmy woman washed the chicken with hand soap!

AlistairSim · 03/04/2012 16:49

Oh my god, meat wants us to all die.

It actually is trying to kill us.

squoosh · 03/04/2012 16:49

People are obessessed with germs. Obviously it'll all get blasted in the fiery furnace that is the oven.

Dawndonna · 03/04/2012 16:50

Place chicken in roasting pan. Wash hands extremely well. Place roasting pan in oven AFTER hand washing.

TheMonster · 03/04/2012 16:51

Kim and Aggie say not to because it spreads the lurgy everywhere.

SparkyMcSparrow · 03/04/2012 16:51

Who washes chicken? Confused

Bunbaker · 03/04/2012 16:51

You are being totally reasonable and very sensible not to wash meat. There is another thread on here about meat washing.

The current guidelines are to not wash any poultry before cooking because a high percentage of chickens carry campylobacter. This is easily spread by washing chicken because of the water that is splashed about.

I don't wash any of my meat and never have. The butcher I buy from is scrupulously clean and makes a good job of butchering their meat - no bits of bone or blood left on the meat.

squoosh · 03/04/2012 16:52

On a side note I was explaining to a colleague about Holy Thursday and how Catholics go to a service in which they all traipse up to the altar and kiss a crucifix that the priest is holding. From memory I think the priest gives it a little wipe after each peck. The crucifix that is.

Colleague was horrified. 'Germs' she shrieked.

Shriekable · 03/04/2012 16:53

There was actually something on tv just the other day and they said you should NEVER wash chicken. Can't remember what programme it was now.

Bunbaker · 03/04/2012 16:54

Is the crucifix made out of silver?

The chalice used for communion wine is silver because it has natural antbacterial properties.

valiumredhead · 03/04/2012 16:55

cheeky I saw that too and when she said 'Let it stand? Where?' Grin

nickelhasababy · 03/04/2012 16:56
