rhianna or whatever her name is.

i find her overt sexual nature really distasteful, and her voice is not all that either.
everytime she is on the radio or tv i turn over. i don't want my dc's exposed to a singer like that.

give me beyonce or the saturdays any day they are more wholesome and less about sex all the time

I like her myself but i agree wuth you as far as my dd's are concerned.

Tbh i don't think Beyonce is much better, despite the fact she is so talented. My dd asked me why "is she always in her knickers"

I don't think either of them are very good role models for young girls.

I agree that pretty much everything she does is distasteful but the other acts you mentioned cannot be described as wholesome our even close. They are just as bad in subtly different ways.

MothershipG · 02/04/2012 09:59

She probably doesn't like you much either Wink

I do know what you mean, but I really don't think she's that much worse than most of the others, including Beyonce and the Saturdays.

I think that rather than directing your 'hate' at one particular artist you'd be better to be concerned with the over sexualisation of large swathes of the music and entertainment industry.

diabolo · 02/04/2012 10:03

She is a beautiful girl and I would have hoped by now, with all her success and £££millions, she would have had the balls to turn round to her record company and say "No - I am not dressing like a tramp any longer and you can't make me".

Unfortunately from what I have seen of interviews with her, she says that being nearly naked makes her feel powerful, so that's not going to happen any time soon.

Even my DH says "she'd look so much better in a T-shirt and pair of jeans".

I don't let my dd's watch the music channel unless i am with them, i do not want them to think that the key to sucess is getting naked and shaking your arse at the world.

Fuzzywuzzywozabear · 02/04/2012 10:12

YANBU - she's known in our house as "that slag Rhianna" I don't even think she's that good a singer either! Also agree with poster above re: over sexualisation in show business in general

StealthPolarBear · 02/04/2012 10:20

I wouldn't lie my childrn to be calling women slags either

ScarlettAlexandra · 02/04/2012 10:22

i was watching one of her videos last night. it was set like an army thingy and she was topless with tape over her nipples. i really don't think its necessary (plus its nowt to do with the army either)

and you are right the music industries fault. i feel like a bit of a prude and I'm not. i don't mind a short skirt etc its just the message behind it that scares me.

Gigondas · 02/04/2012 10:29

It's more than just her as others say- it's a depressing indictment of the music industry.

Did remind me of this story though not impressed farmer

Mrsjay · 02/04/2012 10:29

she is in some film and she was on tv last week looking all demure and interesting being the serious actress type , she looked much better , I dont like her tbh maybe she isnt as talented as they make out and she needs to shake her bits to distract , beyonce seems to do half naked a littlier classier than Rhianna Hmm

AWomanCalledHorse · 02/04/2012 10:31

I don't think she's being told to dress/act like she is. I remember an interview with her a few years back where she said she hated the way 'they' made her dress/have her hair when she first got big (Pon da Replay era).

I rather have her than sanctimonious 'I don't need to take my clothes off, woops my arse is out' Beyonce.

I think you're doing your DC's a disservice by not exposing them to real music instead of the pop music shite. Wink

ScarlettAlexandra · 02/04/2012 10:34

i think it might be that beyonce can actually sing, and is about sisterhood in the songs that impresses me. plus she is married etc.

ri ri put other women down in her songs, and plays to a soley male audience i think.

tethersend · 02/04/2012 10:34

"she's known in our house as "that slag Rhianna""

Really?

You think that's ok?

QueenofDreams · 02/04/2012 10:39

Listen to Evansescence. Amy Lee has a beautiful voice, is an amazing songwriter and I've never yet seen a video of her prancing about nearly naked.

Beyonce is certainly as bad as rihanna, and her songs are rubbish. I don't get all the fuss about her 'dancing' either. It just looks like she's thrashing about to me

RosieBooBoo · 02/04/2012 10:42

YABU, shes always said in interviews that she is not and doesnt want to be a role model which if fair enough- i dont believe that every singer out there has to be 'wholesome' for little girls. I actually went to see her live Blush with my DP's teenage sis and she was amazing quite good.

Fuzzywuzzywozabear · 02/04/2012 10:44

terhersend

Yes I do - clearly

ENormaSnob · 02/04/2012 10:45

I like her music but her image is appalling and some of her lyrics not much better.

I don't let the dc watch the music channels without supervision.

Second QueenofDreams suggestion of Amy Lee, there are loads of strong female vocalists in rock music (thingy from Paramore, Skin, Sharon den Adel from Within Temptation etc).

OP, Beyonce is 10 years older than Rhianna of course they're in different places. in their lives. You could argue Rhianna is a good role model for not taking Chris Brown back after he hit her.

Surely in Pop, women like Pink & Jessie J (doesn't drink, proud of her sexuality, writes her own songs).

By the way, I don't like Pop music! I just have a teenage sister!

tethersend · 02/04/2012 10:51

Right FuzzyWuzzy, good to know.

RosieBooBoo · 02/04/2012 10:51

YABU shes always said in interviews that she is not and doesnt want to be a role model, i dont think all singers out there should be 'wholesome' for little girls. I actually went to see her live last year Blush with DP's teenage sis and she was amazing quite good.

trinitybleu · 02/04/2012 11:11

She may not have taken Chris Brown back but she's working with him. I despair of her.

Can I throw Paloma Faith into the good female vocalist mix? My DD adores her and I love her style. Quirky, individual, fabulous!

WhaleOilBeefHookedIWill · 02/04/2012 11:22

I hate the way shes always singing about sexual content- and this gets played on the radio before the watershed. She just comes across as a trash bag, no role model for young girls and women at all.
